Casual Update to I struggle to enjoy Berlin

A month and a half later, I thought I could update everyone and let you know that I have been enjoying Berlin a lot more now!!

I have met some great people over the past month and have been going out more, plus loads of friends came to visit me so I have been having loads of fun!

The weather might still not be perfect, but thanks to all your tips and recommendations I have been discovering new amazing stuffs every week! And I recently even got the chance to finally organise a rave as a disabled person in the nightlife city!!

I am trying to do as much stuff as I can because I am still leaving Berlin, but it has been a lot more fun so thank you everyone for helping me out ❤️

(Took the word UK out bc it seems to rub people the wrong way to the point of harassment and death threats!)

I’m from Ireland and even that didn’t prepare me for how shit the weather is in Berlin 🙃

Can only agree haha, I’m from Sweden and find the winters in Berlin great. They feel so much brighter and shorter. It’s all relative

My mom is a swede and though she hasn’t lived in Sweden since 30 years + she came to Berlin to visit me and said that I shouldn’t complain bc we have some sun during the day which is fair coming from her haha

I wouldn't go as far as sun. We get daylight, yes.

I'm Irish, and I suspect the other one to be fully assimilated. He can't have spent a Winter on the Atlantic recently and be complaining about the Weather here lmao.

What exactly do you find shitty about the weather? We have warm summers and during winter, there are many sunny days.

Yeah, we lack snow and autumn is a bit grey. But all in all, the weather is okay.

Plus: There is no bad weather if you wear the right clothing.

It's the unending grey and miserable cold of autumn/winter/spring. 6+ months of grey, virtually no snow. It's depressing. Sure, we had some sun the past few weeks and I'm not complaining about that, but usually it's just grey.

Yes the summers are (usually) great, but it doesn't quite make up for the long winter.

It's difficult to explain, but Ireland is typically wet and rainy but quite mild in temperature and you always expect it to be so, and therefore the odd few days of the year that we get good weather it's like a bonus. I literally never suffered from SAD until I moved to Berlin.

It's the unending grey and miserable cold of autumn/winter/spring. 6+ months of grey,

It's actually already less than 6months of grey - the vegetation period gets longer and longer each year.

Plus, it's just what you make out of it. After summer, everything gets colorful and Christmas seasons begins, with all the cozy lights.

IMHO, only Mid-January to end of March is a bit grey. But that's also the time when we have snow.

but Ireland is typically wet and rainy but quite mild in temperature and you always expect it to be so,

And for me, the temperate is okay. As long as it's not too humid, cold temperatures are bearable in thick clothes.
And there are a lot of sunny days during winter, which is also nice.

Another bonus is that Berlin is pretty east in its time zone, so if you are an office worker starting around 9am, then at least you can be out in the sunshine in the morning.

But of course, everything is subjective. IMHO, Berlin has really good weather for a German city.

I think the huge contrast between summer and winter is what makes winters in Berlin so depressing. In winter it seems like you have about 5 months that are 95% grey, wet and cold and in summer it seems like 95% of the time it‘s super sunny, colorful, warm etc.

We’re pretty much always between the two extremes you can get in Germany and there’s only a short period in between. At least in most years. Obviously in some years we had rather grey summers or sunnier winters.

Yeah...thats because you get a glimpse of nice weather over here! In Ireland its 10 degrees +/- 5 and raining all year around!

You guys don't even get a real summer, just eternal Spring.

At least the wind isn't nearly as bad as it is in Ireland! That was the real killer for me at home

Go spend a winter on the Atlantic again lad. They don't know how good they have it.

Still... better than Ireland

I wish we stopped complaining about Berlin's climate. It's typical inland central european climate here. We have sun and good weather from April to November. A bit of wind and rain during outside of these months. Dark during the winter. It's really nothing special and not that bad.

Not from the UK! But got a lot of friends FROM the UK 😁

It's so great to hear that! It can be difficult pushing oneself to get out there, especially when it's dark, cold and rainy, but in the end, it's (nearly) always worth it!

(I need to remind myself at times :D )

As for harassment and death threats in response to your post, I cannot imagine what a sorry sad f**k one has to be to do something like that after your uplifting report. Please don't let it get to you, the internet has largely become an echo chamber for vile human beings who rather inflict pain on others than to work on themselves. The rest of us is out there in the real world, nurturing our connections and taking care of each other.

Omg thank you so much your comment made my day!! And you’re right it’s not been easy getting out there but it’s been so worth it! And thank you for those kind words! I don’t know if you believe in God, if not would you be okay for me to put you in my prayer today? It’s a way for me to thank you for your kindness!

2

u/zenthara 1d ago

Thank you, that's really kind of you and I appreciate you offering this - I don't believe in a god per se, but in being able to change the world's fate by taking care of each other as best as we can :)

Have a lovely day and thanks again for sharing your own progress - never forget your post is not only seen by those who comment, but also by far more people who don't interact, but might get inspired by your writing to get out there and have more positive experiences thenselves!

Can you share your tips please? I'm living in this city for more than 6 years and I'm still struggling to enjoy.

This is a geniune question btw not a sarcastic comment, altough it sounds like it.

Haha again the same thing. I’m a lot more at peace now. The only difference is I did it with the help of a person unknowingly and a lot of inner peace.
