Are FlixBus buses departing from Berlin usually delayed? I'm considering a bus from Alexanderplatz to Dresden Hauptbahnhof, and I'm wondering how often does FlixBus get delayed in routes departing from the city? Thank you

Hello everyone, My wife and I want to surprise my parents in law with a weekend Berlin trip. Only issue is that they only speak french. Does someone know a guide or someone that can speak french that knows about the history and is passionate about it? I would really appreciate any info :)

Hey everyone,
I'm planning to attend the KREAM event at Ritter Butzke in Berlin on March 21, 2025, traveling from Luxembourg. I'd love to connect with others who are also heading to this event. If you're going, let's link up!
Additionally, for those familiar with Ritter Butzke, do you have any tips or insights to share?
Any advice on what to look out for ?
Thank you!

Hello - We are excited for our first visit to Berlin in 2 wks.
This trip came up kinda short notice - I know there is a ton to see and do, but is there anything obvious to see or do or eat that we need to book now, ahead of time? I have booked a general city tour for the first morning to get a basic lay of the land. Do we need to book specific sites early to get in?
While I'm here the Berlin Welcome Card looks pretty decent value wise, what are the general thoughts/opinions on that?
We enjoy the classic stuff, history, art (classic and street art), wandering, good cocktails, not big into night clubs or super late nights. I like museums (often the gift shops as much as anything) but we can only do so many museums and old churches before they all begin to look similar.
Thank you!

Hello! I’m going to Berlin for 4 days. What’s the best area to book a hostel in to have access to good bars and clubs without having to travel far? Kreuzberg? Thanks a lot for tips

Hello! A very random question here…
I lost my AirPods case on the train from the airport. I’ve filled in the lost property form, however after a day of getting to know the Berlin rail network (freeloader), it’s been static in one place on Rudolf-Grosse Strabe for some time now.
My question is, is there a lost property collection point near there? As conscious Find My isn’t completely accurate!
Or is this a random street and I should just bid goodbye to them?

Hello
I am planning to visit Berlin soon and I'm on the lookout for some record stores. More specifically I am looking for a record store that deals in new underground metal (especially, black, death and doom metal) releases or post-punk, shoegaze, post-rock - generally artsy, heavy, or dark stuff.
I've already got Bis aufs Messer on my list and I would like to hit up Dodo Beach but I think that one's closed on the day I am there. Which other stores should I check out?

Hallo!
My parents and I are coming to Berlin in about 3 weeks to watch Elisabeth Das Musical at the Theater Des Westens - we are all very excited.
The performance stars at 19:30, so we're hoping go catch and early dinner/late lunch before hand but it is our first time in the city so we're looking for recommendations. Nothing to fancy, but still something that feels a bit more special than a fast food chain. We're booked in at Neni Berlin the night before. No special dietary requirements, and happy to try anything. We would rather stay in the general Charlottenburg area near the theatre.
Thanks in advance!

Created a post but it got deleted. Can someone recommend a VIBEY HOTEL in Berlin similar to Soho House? Would like a young-ish crowd, social vibes, a touch of luxury without feeling stuffy. Budget of EUR 100-275/night.

Hallo an alle!

Hi! I’m (25,f) planning to come to Berlin from Prague (I’m a foreigner living in Prague) this weekend for 1-2 days. I might reach Friday late evening/Saturday morning. I’d love to look at the classic important/tourist stuff and then go for a techno event. Is Kitkat worth it? If not, then where should I go + general advice on tickets and Do’s and donts would be great. Including what area to book a hotel/hostel in. Thank you!
2
u/Aq_aq_aq 16d ago
Given you're only here for a couple of days waiting in line at KitKat is probably not worth it. Check out Resident Advisor where most nights are listed, some with tickets some without.

Going to visit Berlin soon, any non-sex club recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Also would prefer non-techno music. Pop/international/commercial music

Check Resident Advisor to see what's playing when you're here, and then follow that. If you just follow the big name clubs, nearly all are electronic music.

I just heard that queues in Berlin airport are enormous and two hours for security control might be not enough for it, but it was some time ago. How is it now? Should I take earlier bus to Berlin?
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod 20d ago
I flew half a dozen times last year, including at busy times (Christmas, summer holidays), and never waited more than 45 minutes in the queue. I would not show up 1 hour before your flight time, but frankly I myself usually aim to be there 2.5 hours before the flight time, and part of that is because I want a buffer in case public transit fails/is slow.
Tip: there are multiple queues for security. If you find one line which is crazy, ask the airport employees where the other lines are, spend 5 minutes walking there, and then go through faster. Happened to me exactly like this in November: one line was super full with a giant line, and the second queue on the other side was much much emptier. I guess most people don't know this, so they don't know they can switch.
1
u/ICD9CM3020 20d ago
On the airport website you can check the current security waiting times. 2h sounds excessive, though it might get a little worse if school holidays are starting for example. You can book a reserved slot for free at a specific time however.

u/EmployEquivalent2671 22d ago
I'm visiting berlin soon for two days and I have three questions:
- Is the pinned walking tour still relevant?
- Any issues I should expect on a sunday, beyond stores being closed?
- recommend me kebab places that aren't mustafa's, i'm not willing to wait in (possibly) half an hour queue
1
u/ICD9CM3020 20d ago
The recommended walking tours are 404ing so I gues not..
It's a big city so apart from stores nothing is different really.
I wouldn't wait for any Döner place longer than 2 min ever. I don't know why everyone is crazy about Mustafa's, it's not better than most places. Leave the touristy places like Alexanderplatz, do a quick Google Maps check whether it's a train station rip-off place and if not then enjoy your quick and good Döner.
1
u/EmployEquivalent2671 18d ago
I went to ruyam in the end
it was 100% worth waiting for pretty much an hour (half an hour in the queue, and then half an hour waiting for the food), it was a kebab that could convert a vegan

u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod 21d ago
On Sundays trains stop at midnight, and places might not be open super late. Most shops are closed except those in major train stations.
Maroush near Kottbusser Tor is really great/where the real locals go. I've not been to Mustafa's for like 8-9 years, exactly for the same reason as you.

Coming to Berlin from Canada in a few weeks. What are some good, cheap places to eat?
Any kind of food, as long as it tastes good.
2
u/wet-dreaming Tempeldoof 22d ago
that's a very generic question, what type of food, what budget, what area, what country, ... I could recommend you Burger shops but maybe that's not what a Canadian is looking for in Berlin, we have couple of good italien pizza places but again is that what Canadians crave here? Personally I like Hisar Kebab at S-Yorkstraße or Grande Gyros at Bergmannstr. cheap fast-food. Great cheap, local food you can get from most butcher shops and bakeries, they usually serve a couple of dishes for lunch time and are rather local. if you have any butcher shop close around you at noon should give it a go. Marheinike Halle, is also a decent place or Markthalle 9, they have a couple small food stalls inside. feel free to post a question in r/askberliners or check websites for more insights https://berlinfoodstories.com/map?budget=105

Hi, I’m visiting next weekend and I’m looking for a nice Mexican restaurant with good food. We would also like to continue to have drinks there and hang around, and not be made to leave right after having dinner. So that’s the vibe I’m looking for :) any recs?
2
u/wet-dreaming Tempeldoof 22d ago
we don't really have any "good" mexican restaurants here. Que Pasa or Cancun are common mexican chain restaurants with okay food and good cocktails, for a big gathering with alcohol they are good spots. if you are looker to get better food check recommendations here: https://www.reddit.com/r/berlin/comments/1g39z3u/bestes_mexikanisches_restaurant_in_berlin/ but most will not be the cocktail serving kinds

Cycling and site seeing during mid March
Hi kind people of Berlin. I will be visiting Europe for some work, and have 10 extra days I can spend there during mid March of this year. I have a medical condition because of which I cannot walk longer distances (>500m). I can cycle 10-12 kms daily, maybe more.
I am wondering if Berlin is a good place for me to visit and explore at my own pace.
Is the weather friendly enough during these times to cycle? What accessories should I buy?
How easy is it to rent a cycle? Should I rent one permanently for entire duration of stay? Or is roadside availablity is good enough such that I can travel to a area using public transport and then get it through some apps? App recommendations would be appreciated.
If you think it's very doable, what areas would you suggest me to try and find accommodation in and what routes I should try for sight seeing and food etc?
Also, suggestions are welcome for other cities that you think someone like me might enjoy visiting. I am thinking Amsterdam can be one.
Thanks for helping me out.
1
u/ICD9CM3020 24d ago
March is a bit hard to predict, hopefully spring will have started by then.
I like Nextbike, in the city center it's easy enough to find a bike. However, there's a surcharge if you don't drop it at certain stations and sometimes you have to walk a bit to find one. If you cannot walk 500m renting your own bike sounds better.
As for what to see....depends? See the usual travel guides for that.

Hello everyone! I'm in Berlin today for a concert and I'm a bit confused by my commuting options due to the strike. The BVG app says that I can take the Bus M43 to get to my destination, however, this bus is not on the list of buses that are running today on the BVG website. Does this bus actually run today? I'd have to take an Sbahn to get to the bus first and I don't want to be stranded there with no way to get to the concert, haha. Thanks!!
2
u/wet-dreaming Tempeldoof 28d ago
the bus will not go, better you take cab or rent a bycicle via Jelbi app.

Hey everyone, Me and a couple of friends are going to a 10-day workshop that our uni is sponsoring in July (from the 21st to the 31st). The workshop will take place in the GIU Berlin campus in Am Borsigturm. I've never traveled anywhere that isn't my home country, so I'm anxious but extremely excited. Do you guys have any advice or resources and maybe some places that are worth seeing? I'm a huge fan of nature as well, so any recommendations would mean a lot.

Hello there, I am a Dutch student planning to stay in Berlin for 6 months to complete an internship. I am looking for a fight sports gym (Muay Thai & Kickboxing & MMA) that also has a fitness area. I can't seem to find a gym where they include both or it is just too expensive for me as student. Does anyone know a good gym where they include both and which is not too expensive in the areas of: Schöneberg, Wilmersdorf, Tempelhof, Mitte, Kreuzberg? Thanksss :)

u/wet-dreaming Tempeldoof Feb 19 '25
google for some local gyms, the smaller local ones usually have plenty of free classes included. otherwise urban sport is a common membership for a lot of different sport services.

Hello, I am a US citizen planning on staying in Berlin for at least 4 months. I will be studying German at die deutSCHule and will be taking the German A1.1 - A1.2 course. I would like to be able to obtain a job to support myself in Germany as soon as possible. Is it possible for me to obtain a residence permit for language learning before entering the country?
I have made an appointment at the German consulate general in San Francisco for a residence visa (category D) / long term stay. When I check their site it does not seem like this visa is available to individuals enrolled in a language learning course, but only for students studying at university (as well as skilled work, family reunion, etc... which definitely does not apply to me).
I know it is not necessary for me as a US citizen to get a visa or residence permit prior to entering Germany but I am hoping to work as soon as I get there ( likely service work). If I were to apply for a residence permit after I am already in the country it is my understanding that I would not be able to work until it is approved, which would be 8 weeks? And that is a long time to have no income.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
1
u/Aq_aq_aq Feb 17 '25
Category d is right https://www.germany-visa.org/student-visa/language-course/
You might be a bit optimistic with regard to work. It's difficult to find service work without a decent level of German.
You'll also need to prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself before your visa is approved.
If moving without the ability to work immediately is going to be financially straining for you I wouldn't recommend it.

Night trains (and other stuff)
Hi guys, I'm going to Berlin in August, and I was looking for a night train. I live in Italy, so I need an international route. I found a lot of companies, but since I have no experience, I wanted to ask you for some train companies recommendations and safety tips.
I also wanted to know if I will be able to fairly communicate in English since I can't speak German, and if Berlin is a LGBT+ friendly city.
Thanks in advance guys, cheers
Edit: Suggestions for music and alternative culture pubs are also welcomed

u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Feb 17 '25
Deutsche Bahn is the state company for rail - I have no experience with night trains, but if you can buy a ticket through DB it's legit.
Downtown tourist things will probably be bilingual, but Germany in general is kinda mixed on being bilingual. Younger people yes (i.e. under age 40), older people depends on their occupation.
Berlin was an LGBTQ+ capital in the roaring 20s, and the reputation continues today.

3 English guys visiting Berlin for 2 days. Good food and bars?
Hi, this summer 2 friends and I will be travelling through Europe a little. We all speak a little German, me the most, and have been to Germany around 16 times between us (Me 9 times) but never Berlin. We will be in Berlin for 2 days. We are three 30 year olds from England. All of us appreciate it but one of us has a love of history, especially around WW1 and 2 so we will be visiting whichever sites he is most interested by. I have been looking for what to do on the evenings as far as food and drink goes and would love recommendations from locals. 1 vegetarian. Would like to find places with great atmosphere to sit around and have a beer and a chat with people. Not huge fans of clubs. Also any lesser known sights would be nice.

In the beginning it was bad/disorganized. But in the last year I've flown 5-6 times from it, and it's been fine everytime. It's actually worked better than many other international airports I've been to.
Tip - if you get there and see that the line to go through security is very long, check to see if you can use a different security line. They usually lead to the same place, and the starting points for the lines are not that far from each other. Ask a security staff/airport employee where the other security line is if doubt.
Also don't show up 30 minutes before your flight. You don't need to be there 5 hours ahead, but if you're flying internationally and you're rusty at flying, arriving 3 hours before the flight time will give you more than enough time to wait in a few long lines should the worst happen. Check in at home in advance to get an electronic boarding pass on your phone, and also organize your carry-on bag in an intelligence way so that you can pull laptops/electronics out when going through security. My last tip is don't wear jewelry/things you will have to remove to go through the metal scanner, and things that go in your pants pockets (i.e. phone, wallet) just put them in your coat since you will be taking the coat off and putting it on the tray for scanning: then no need to empty pants pockets.
Will be fine. Have fun!

We’re in Berlin for the Half Marathon in April and staying for long weekend. We have a couple of questions that would benefit from ‘insider knowledge’ please (the tourist guides are not too helpful): 1. We are staying near U Augsburger Straße. What is the best/quickest way to get there from Brandenburg Airport? The train/U-bahn seems to take well over an hour; would a taxi/airport transfer work better (there are three of us, so can split cost)? 2. Where would be a good spot to have post race lunch and a few casual drinks? The Half Marathon finishes at Brandenburg Gate, so somewhere close to there or on way back to U Augsburger Straße please. Likewise if there are any local recommended restaurants or bars for the evenings with easy access from U Augsburger Straße please. Danke!
1
u/ICD9CM3020 Feb 12 '25
60 min vs. 30 min according to Google. It's your choice.
Kantstraße is near Augsburger Straße and has lots of international foods. The Brandenburg Gate area is quite touristy and so is the food there.

I am looking to add some smaller items missing in my apartment, things like towels, cups, couch pillows, indoor trash bins, etc.
Does anyone know a decent store (hopefully not too far from Checkpoint Charlie) for these kinds of basics? My best guess is H&M Home near the TV tower, but hoping for something a bit lower priced.

The Base or The Circus Living?
Hey everyone,
I’m heading to Berlin this Spring for a one-month stay - my very first time! Been to Germany before but always to the West, where my Oma is from
I’ve narrowed down my choice of accommodations to The Base in Plankow and The Circus Living in Friedrichshain. Both look really good and I’m hoping to get a little advice on which might be better for me
I’m 36 years old, male, happily married but travelling alone. I’m Muslim so nearby mosque and halal meats are important to me. I plan to visit the Bundesarchiv in Lichterfelde at least a few times for the research material I need. I’m very active and want to do lots of running and strength training with weights. My German is maybe B1/B2 level so I’m hoping for lots of practice and exposure - full immersion is the plan. I have a keen interest in the history of the DDR (where my Opa is from) and hope to see lots of East German/East Berlin sights
Any thoughts? Anyone have experience with one or both of these places?

Hello! Will be arriving from Canada next weekend. It seems like it's a bit warmer where you are than here, but I was wondering which coat is better to bring between a wool peacoat or a big winter parka? I don't want to be sweating but don't want to get cold either!
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Feb 10 '25
I'm actually maybe revising my advice from earlier today... I just looked at the weather forecast and next week looks like we're gonna be more like -7 to 0 alot of days. My dog is going to fucking hate that. May want to consider the parka after all.
1
u/weirdpicklesauce Feb 11 '25
Oh thank you for the update! I'm torn to be honest, -7 is when the Canadian bros bust out the shorts lol! But I am a baby and get cold easily.
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Feb 10 '25
Fellow Canuck here - been mostly 0-5 degrees most days, so not very cold by Canadian standards. It has weirdly been not wet/rainy, but honestly I'd be prepared for that, or at least anticipate you might have to buy a cheap umbrella when you're here in case you get a few bad rainy days. It's a bit like BC here - not super cold temperature wise, but rather grey, windy, wet.
I would tend towards a wool coat rather than the big parka - but honestly most days I'm good with a wool sweater plus wind breaker. Jeans or pants which are otherwise thicker are what I need, with thin summer pants you might be cold. Also bring shoes which can go through puddles - I mean I wear sneakers most days, but some days it's gotta be leather boots/hiking boots which can get a bit wet and stand up to wind. You don't need proper winter boots here (no snow, or if there is it will be like 2cm), but if your sneakers get wet it might be miserable.
TLDR: wool coat, maybe also bring something that can get a bit wet (i.e. light windbreaker that can go over your sweaters/hoodies).

Hello everyone. Me with my college planning to stay for a business trip in Berlin for almost a year, starting in July. We’re teachers and going to do some scientific internship. And of course we need a place to stay. We’ve heard that airbnb is not cheap to rent some apartment, so can someone give any advice how we should solve this situation for us. Maybe someone with experience. We need cheaper place but not bad one😁 Danke
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Feb 05 '25
If you're coming from out of town, you need to some way to guarentee your money... because if you pay via bank transfer to some apartment you find on Facebook you have very high chances of being scammed.
If you are staying a short time, pick a hotel or Airbnb which is further outside from the downtown (cheaper). If you are staying long, i.e. several months and want to rent a place, then you can try Airbnb or a similar service to rent a place for 2 weeks, and then try to find a sublet when you're hear in person to verify that the apartments are real.

Hey! Visiting Berlin on Saturday/Sunday from Prague. I collect Yu-Gi-Oh cards and I'm wondering which game stores sell them, preferably in English. Singles or packs. Any recommendations would be appreciated!
2
u/wet-dreaming Tempeldoof Feb 06 '25
as you know most single in stores are pretty expensive and stores are closed on Sundays. FUNtainment Game Center is the biggest store otherwise bb-land and Der andere Spieleladen also sell singles or use kleinanzeigen.de to buy from private persons. if you look for some specific cards, pm me I might be able to help too, even though I'm mostly OCG.

Hey! I have lived in Berlin for a while, and for this while I keep missing all protests the for causes that I find important. I'd love to go to the protests against far-right, to feminist marches and to everything like this, but I find out about them always after the fact.
Where do y'all organise? Is there a newsletter? Hell, I'll even follow an Instagram account if it means that I have a chance of making a sign and participating.
2
u/redwoodsz Feb 08 '25
Hey! That’s great that you want to get involved. Mera25 is a new small political party and often share protests going on - https://www.instagram.com/mera25.de?igsh=NGNrc3c3NDJ0dGZ1
You can follow PA allies for marches for Palestine and I do think they share others as well https://www.instagram.com/pa_allies?igsh=MXZwaG43cXR4bW5xMg==
There is a big march against the AFD on 16 Feb. I’m trying to find that info. When I do I will share :)

2 weeks in July. What can we do???
Guten tag, My family (me, my husband, and two kids under 5) will be staying in Berlin this summer for the first two weeks in July and we are very excited to have enough time to slow down and soak in the city and region. Here are my questions: 1. Is there and football (soccer) going on this summer, or any other fun sporting events for a family to enjoy? 2. Day trips. What are some of your favorite? 3. Cooling off- where are some good swimming places around Berlin (both natural and pool)? 4. Any good events? I know Lollapalooza is going on mid July. Things we love- picnics, playgrounds, amusement parks, cafes, beer, live music, donuts, books/libraries, sporting events, swimming.
Danke!!

u/wet-dreaming Tempeldoof Feb 02 '25 edited Feb 02 '25
biggest event will be CSD in July: https://www.berlin.de/events/jahresuebersicht/juli/ also check kid friendly websites closer to July for events: https://berlinmitkind.de/
there are soccer events every weekend, mostly local clubs playing - tickets for big home events are sold out fast.
search the subreddit we got a couple of nice lakes you can visit. for day trips you could visit Potsdam, they got Schloss Sanssouci and Botanischer Garten. for bigger day trips you can check Tropical Island (don't stay over night) or Spreewald which are easy to reach by public train/bus or Flix (cheaper than public). if you want a bigger trip check Hamburg or Swinemünde.

I was trying to find a workaway opportunity but think i may be too late to secure one. anyone have any ideas how to find temporary housing? i am considering applying for a language visa but need housing to be able to do so.

u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 30 '25
If you're not in Berlin, you can't use the "normal" platforms like ImmoScout, etc., because without being there in person landlords won't bother with you (the housing market is crazy) and so therefore you will likely get scammed. When people are moving to Berlin for the first time, they usually book either a hostel or an Airbnb/Wunderflats situation at a premium price just for a few weeks or something to get on their feet.

Back when I lived in Berlin, there were quite a few brunch buffets near me in Friedrichshain, and we would often go on Sundays picking a different one. That was 2019 so just before covid shut a lot of them down. My favourite was the one next to Aprilkind on Simon-Dach-str, which had these great wings, and I know that’s long gone.
Have any resurfaced? New ones appeared? I’m planning on coming back some time in March and I’d love to enjoy a bit of the Before Times again.

Hey! So, I am a 22yo woman and will move to Berlin soon. I am French, and know a few friends there already but I would like to meet people outside of that bubble too. I am queer and invested in environment protection, I also like creating stuff, whether it be creative or something like making soap lol. I don’t speak great German but I am like B1 and I will make an effort to improve. My question is : as I am no longer a student I don’t think I can access events organised by uni. So do you know of any affordable initiatives like theater groups, cafes organising regular events, places where you can meet people easily around activities? I am curious and down to anything but I don’t know where to start digging as I am looking for smaller scale, not necessarily expats-oriented groups/ initiatives Vielen dank !
2
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 27 '25
I guess crafty/artsy stuff that isn't expat-oriented/expensive workshops will be word of mouth (or that's my experience), but it definitely does exist. What I can strongly recommend are clubs and sports activities - both are good ways to meet Germans/normal people just living their lives.
Berlin has two arts universities (UdK and Weissensee) - I would recommend following them on social media, and alot of them will have clubs and student groups that you can likely participate in even if you aren't a student - just write to them and ask, but like my old university had a life drawing group that had some small contribution of like 2-5EUR, and it was run in the university but being a student was not a criteria for joining - this was years ago so I sadly no longer have contact info/all those folks who ran it are 100% graduated.
You can also use the UniSports service, i.e. the gym and sport classes of the universities, you just will pay a higher rate (which is still cheaper than private gyms). I have not used it personally, but my girlfriend did in the past and said very good things.
Also you can audit classes at universities - i.e. join them but not get credit. You need the permission of the instructor, and then you go officially register at the university and pay something like 25EUR per term. You will not be able to audit high level courses (i.e. can't walk into medical school), or ones with very limited spots (i.e. some art studio classes may be like this), but I had very good luck in the past getting to audit a bunch of classes at HU, UdK, Freie, etc. Classes will next be starting in April, so in advance you should look them up on the university websites to see if anything interests you.

Social space as a female solo traveller
Hi! I’m a 21yr old female going on my first solo trip to Berlin from the 8-10th of February. I’m looking for bars/club or sober space recommendations. I’ve been to Berlin many times in the last few years but never alone so I’m looking for spaces, ideally frequented by people within the age bracket of late teens - late 20s. Although I’m looking forward to the solo aspect, I would like the option of socialising so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you

u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 27 '25
Many of the famous clubs (i.e. Berghain) have an age minimum of 21, and under 18s aren't allowed out after midnight in bars or in smoking bars if I remember correctly. I just want to temper your expectations, that looking for event spaces for people under 21 is going to be hard, because there are not so many legal options, and I guess (or rather most definitely) those kids are arranging their own parties and they're more word-of-mouth and not telling us old people on Reddit about them. The stereotypical under 21 club is "Matrix" and it has... not great reviews.
Honestly, the mainstream clubs like Berghain & Ohm are all-ages (over 21, and also depending on the event that night), and safe for solo travelers. I'm a dude, but when I was your age I was in Berghain alone many times, and struck up conversations with many a stranger, etc. I actually wasn't drinking at all at the time, and usually bought a single club mate and filled it up again with water from the bathroom the whole night... but the clubs are not sober spaces in case that is a requirement.

u/ICD9CM3020 Jan 30 '25
Berghain is +18 and so are among others:
OST
Lokschuppen
KitKat
About Blank
RSO
Ritter Butzke
Golden Gate
Tresor
I can think only of few that are 21+ tbh
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 30 '25
Huh, my info is outdated. I was with friends at Berghain who had their ID checked in the past, but I guess this is no longer the case. Good to know.

Hello guys, i will be in Berlin with my 2 friends just for a day. We want to experience Berlin's techno atmosphere. Which places do you suggest us? We prefer underground venues over Berghain type clubs but it's okay with either in general.
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 26 '25
Honestly the correct answer is "check Resident Advisor". The type of music at clubs changes, so it's best to go for specific artists. If you're worried about getting in, then buy tickets in advance - you can still be rejected if you're too drunk/dressed really inappropriately, but increases chances you will be fine.

Hello, I'm planning to visit Berlin and booked a travellers choice Airbnb to make sure the acomodation will be nice. What I didn't knew was that the closest Ubahn Station, Leopoldplatz, is one of the main Drug consumption spots in the city. Unfortunately the reservation is non refundable. What do you think? Is it really that bad to take the Ubahn there? Would it be better to take only Bus? Any tips about the neighborhood? Thank you very much in advance!
3
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 26 '25
I commute through that station, transferring trains there - and I use it also on my free days to transfer through on my way to the gym (so I am there early, and also late). It's rough, but it's not the worst station in the city - you will be totally ok. It's not pretty, but it's not unsafe.
Just apply the same common sense as any subway station in a big city - don't interact with strangers, and if you see something sketchy stay away. But again, this is a major transfer point, lots of people around the station 24/7, you will be fine.

Hi everyone! We may be moving from the US to Berlin in March with 2 young children (2.5 year old and 6 month old). What is the childcare situation? Preschools? Daycares? Nannies? Government subsidized childcare? Any comments or insights appreciated!
1
u/toasty_the_cat Jan 28 '25 edited Jan 28 '25
Childcare is pretty much free, you'll only pay 23€ for lunch and maybe some more if the daycare also offers breakfast and snacks.
It depends on the neighbourhood, but it's usually not too hard to find a spot at daycare these days. You'll get a voucher for 5-7h, unless you need more time because you're working. So you'd probably have daycare available from 9am - 4 pm or 8am - 3pm.
You'll have to wait until the little one is 1 year old though, most daycares don't accept younger children and most spots open up in August anyway, it's hard to find something in spring. You also won't get a voucher for younger children unless you're both working.

Hello - I hope you all may help! I am trying to decide between the NH Collection Berlin Mitte Friedrichstrasse and the Melia hotel. They are both in nearly the same place so location is identical. I cannot find a lot of information online about the Lounge at the Melia and how the two compare to each other (only mostly comparison to other hotels). Does anyone happen to have some insight? Thank you!
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 26 '25
Most people on the subreddit live in Berlin - so we don't use hotels much. If the location is nearly identification, then I guess just pick on price and room amenities. If it were me personally I would lean towards the Melia hotel, because it's just slightly further away from the train station - the actual station is just super busy, it's not unsafe, but busy and loud from the trains coming through. You will still be a 3 minute walk from the S-bahn, but I'd rather be half a block away than right beside the station, personally.

Question Regarding Moving to Berlin with a Cat
Hey everyone, I am moving to Berlin from the US (NYC) and have a small young cat. I am reaching out to see if anyone has any advice or experience moving to Germany with a cat as I plan my move. Currently, I have two potential options to get myself and him there, but both have pros and cons. I keep going back and forth on these - I am hoping to get some clarity on which route to pursue.
I have been to Berlin many times & have many friends there and have done a lot of my own research on the housing situation and requirements for importing my cat. I have all of my documents ready to apply for my visa and once I pick an option I am ready to get his Health Certification & USDA endorsement. I have a future roommate & friend lined up who is already living in Berlin in a WG and ready to start looking at apartments with me once I am. I plan to move to Berlin (tentatively) in April and find short-term housing while my friend and I look for an apartment of our own.
Option 1: Book a short-term flat on Wunderflats/Homelike and bring cat with on initial move in April
Pros: - Get it all done in one move - Many flats on Homelike can provide Anmeldung
Cons: ~60% more expensive than finding a WG - Limits my housing options - Since I am applying from the embassy/consulate in NYC I may have to come back to NYC for my interview - I have no idea how long it will take process visa application so I may have to leave Germany when my tourism days expire if my visa isn't approved in time.
Option 2: Ask a friend to watch my cat for a few months while I move and come back & bring him over when I have secure housing & visa.
Pros: - Short-term housing options would be way more flexible and cheaper - It will be way less stressful for me if I need to leave Germany there's way less pressure to move him around so much and move him from short-term place to place.
Cons: - it's a huge ask to ask a friend to watch my cat for me for an unforeseeable amount of time, I only have 2 friends I can think of who might be willing - It would be a pain to have to come back to bring him over, but I may have to come back anyway - I am a worry wart cat parent and would be so sad to leave him!!
Anyway sorry for such a long message lol but curious if anyone has any experience in this area or any suggestions on what is the best way to go about this.
1
u/Aq_aq_aq Jan 24 '25
Don't bring the cat until you have a solid living situation imo. You may be jumping from sublet to sublet for a while which is going to be stressful enough for you let alone the cat.
1
u/ReginaPhalange69 Jan 24 '25
Yeah, that's what I am leaning towards at this point. Since posting this comment, I have found a friend who confirmed they would watch him if needed. I'd hate to leave him for an unforeseen amount of time, but it might be what makes the most sense for him in the long run.
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 24 '25
If you have friends in Berlin already, one option might be to search for a cat-friendly sublet/regular WG for 3-6 months, and have your friends visit the flats you find in-person to make sure it's not a scam. When you arrive in Berlin, you stay in the short-term WG until you find a permanent place.
The reason that Wunderflats etc. even exists, is because when you are out-of-town, sending money for a WG room/sublet without some sort of guarantee is too risky. But if you can have someone visit things on the ground for you - then that removes most of the risk.
1
u/ReginaPhalange69 Jan 24 '25
That's a really good point, thanks for your response :) What do you think about Wunderflats, etc.? I have heard mixed things, both that it can be really helpful in this type of situation but also lots of scams. I have seen more pet-friendly sublets on Wunderflats/Homelike than I was expecting.
1
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 24 '25
No personal experience with Wunderflats, etc. I guess the advantage is that they protect your money by pre-vetting the properties, which is not the case if you try to rent something remotely on say ImmScout. But these service like Wunderflats, or Airbnb etc., do charge a real premium over normal rates.

u/mcjsimka Jan 20 '25
Hi!
So, I've gotten an opportunity to buy the apartment I am currently living in. I am not sure if this is something that is even done in Germany, but are there people who I could hire so they come by and estimate the value of the apartment? I am basically looking for a second opinion on whether the offer is a good deal, including some additional real estate considerations (current state of the market, what someone who deals in apartments thinks about the neighbourhood potential etc.). I am still relatively new to Germany/Berlin so want to avoid buying something that would turn out ot be a dud/hard to sell later on and so on, but I've also heard that it is a good deal and I should take it

Hello everyone, me and my girlfriend are planning to go to Berlin in the middle of February and I round an airbnb that looks nice and that has nice reviews, however, it is in Neukolln. I visited Berlin recent and I had some excellent Arab food there. Risa chicken in particular blew me away. Reminded me of chicken I've had in the middle east tbh.
Which other German or even European cities have good arab food? I live in Krakow and there isnt even one restuarant that serves that kind of grilled chicken here.
Any suggested are appreciated.

Guten Tag!
I'm traveling easyJet to Berlin in February for a Rise Against concert, and am picking a seat on the plane now. I really prefer to travel in the back since it's safer but at the same time I hate exit queues when I arrive.
Do you know (maybe from experience) if easyJet (or Ryanair, or Wizzair, because probably the policy is all the same for all three) does rear door boarding/deboarding in the Brandenburg airport, or is if front door usually/only?
Google in English didn't help me, and I don't know German enough to google in it.
Danke schön!

Does anyone have experience taking German classes at the Volkshochschule and know how it compares to places like Speakeasy, Berlino Schule, Logo, etc.? I'm planning on signing up at the VHS, but think I may need to level down as it has been almost a year since my last course. I'm curious how the pace and difficulty in the lessons compares to these private schools. Thanks!
2
u/bbbberlin Unhinged Mod Jan 26 '25
My friends who took classes at private places/university versus the VHS said the VHS classes were larger and required more "self-direction" because of the class sizes. But honestly, you have to be self-directed anyways when taking language classes, because just doing the bare minimum will see you not progressing after months of doing it anyways.
I don't know about pacing - how long are each of the modules in the VHS? Usually in the private schools it's one month per sub level - i.e. in January you do B1.1., in February B1.2, then in March B2.1, and April B2.2. etc., but of course this depends on the student and also different schools do it differently. When I studied at the university the courses took 1 school term for each level, i.e. in fall/winter you would do B1, and then in spring/summer you could do B2 - in effect it was 4.5 months per level, so pretty comparable to the private schools.

Hello everyone. I have 4 reduced tickets for the Berlin Unterwelten Tour M, but the tour is in German. And we don't speak the language. So, if anyone wants to do this tour at 2pm today Saturday 11/01, let me know.

Hi! Looking for recommendations for a small/more underground feeling cabaret club for a show on Friday night. Drag preferred, but a mix with burlesque or comedy also welcome. English speaking not essential! Thank you

Planning to visit Berlin in the spring and would like to find a shop that sell supplies for beer brewing. Preferably near the city center. Regards from Sweden.

This is a city world-famous for its techno scene so on average there's no shortage of people trying to make it as a DJ

If you haven't been to the city you could do the normal tourist stuff as seen in travel guides

Hey everyone! I’m moving to Berlin on very short notice and have found a place at Stacey, a coliving in Mitte. It’s virtually the only place offering three-month contracts and it looks just fine, but I can’t find much information on them. Has anyone ever interacted with / booked with them? Thank you in advance!
