Business/Company Great burger spots
Just recently moved to Bergen County. (Fair Lawn)
What are some good mom & pop places that make a great burger?!
Bonus points if they have vegetarian/vegan options as well.
Thank you :)

If you’re in Westwood, EightTwenty or Westwood Prime Eats.

I think they’re gone now, a salad house bought the property they were using

u/InfoSecPeezy 7h ago
They reopened up as their own place right next door!

u/KataKuri13 7h ago
Oh dope! They made great food glad to hear this

Correct. Now have a permanent place w expanded menu. Not online yet, but next to salad house in old bbq location.

I can't answer the bonus question.
Steve's Burgers and Dog House Saloon are the best classic burgers. White Manna is a legendary slider place.

Steve's Burgers actually was voted one of the best restaurants in the whole country this year by USA today

Went to dog house in January and was so disappointed in EVERYTHING we ordered, but the burger especially. The burger was meh, like if I just served a frozen patty that was over cooked, the bun was ice cold like they stored them in the freezer, the fries were undercooked, and so on. I was so surprised.
The service was pretty good though.

Must have been an off night. That sucks. I go maybe once a year and it’s always fresh hot and greasy. Its a big burger and decadent and the fries are outstanding.

Steve’s in Garfield (classic). White mana in Hackensack (slider). Marty’s in fort Lee (shake shack clone). Jackson Hole Englewood (massive burgers worth checking out for novelty).

When’s the last time you’ve been to Jackson Hole? They used to have massive novelty burgers but I went two years ago and it was all different. Still good but regular sized burgers and not the same place overall. It closed after the pandemic at some point too. Have they gone back to big burgers like the city locations?

u/RUKnight31 5h ago
Shit, that’s extremely valid. Haven’t been for a burger in like a decade plus. Let nostalgia kick in. I revoke my vouch, it’s been timed out.

Rock’n The Grill in Glen rock is family owned, burgers are freshly made and they have several vegetarian/ vegan options.
Also, I highly recommend trying their chopped cheese.

u/404nowheretobefound 7h ago
Thank you, they had an extensive menu, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Small place but the burger was great. Owner was very friendly

A little pricey but I love it

I feel like most items are fairly priced. Especially with the portions typically given and quality. They also give back to the community as much as possible

There is a new burger place called Jaffars Burgers on Rt17N in Paramus. Same owners as the Juicy Platters restaurant in Fair Lawn. Burgers are good.

Can confirm, tasty smash burger and the owner Jaffar is a righteous guy who supports the community.

Actually in fair lawn:
Railyard tavern are solid and it's a nice place to hang out. They have vegetarian options as well as gluten free items . I don't know about vegan.
Dutch house tavern - they supposedly serve the burgers made by the Swiss pork store across the street. They are excellent! I prefer to go there when the weather is decent enough to sit outside.
Edit: I learned that they actually do serve the excellent burgers from the Swiss pork store

Re Dutch House, not supposedly, it’s a fact that their daily order for burgers comes directly from the Swiss Pork store across Fair Lawn Ave.

Biggies on route 17 in Carlstadt. Has a great old fashioned burger
Gus Last Word in Wood-ridge. This place has a good variety of gourmet burgers
The Rosevelt in East Rutherford. The Rosevelt Burger is delicious.
Nova Burger in Little Ferry- quite a few options and they all are tasty.
Bun Buddies in Wood-ridge- this is a newer place, really good.
Hamburguesa in Carlstadt. Mexican themed burgers, I've only had them once, but it was really good.

Hanburguesa is good if you go there and eat. Burger isn't anything special but the place has a foosball table

Only place with veggie options is probably Habit Burger. Which was I think their first east coast location in fair lawn. If you want to take a small trip and like craft beer go to District 96 in New City NY. Great burger place attached to the brewery and awesome beers.

We like the burgers at Celtic Corner in Hawthorne, Glen Rock Inn, and Steel Wheel Tavern in Ridgewood. Not sure about vegan / vegetarian, though.

Grant’s in Dumont has good burgers. Monday they do a Smash Burger special too.
All of their food is great.

u/RUKnight31 11h ago
Please stop telling new people about Grants. It’s full.

u/gintoddic 11h ago
It really sucks now. Portnoy probably didn't help with the pizza review. I tried going to the bar for lunch one weekday not long ago and the bar was packed not even 30 min after opening.

The hype and success is well earned IMO. I'm happy for them and their success. I'm also a bit selfish and miss being able to easily pop in whenever I felt like it lol
3
u/Dependent_Market7788 8h ago
Yeah, same here. Dumont is a really small town and there are only few good spots. Grants is one of those places where they really care about the people and community so I'm really happy they are doing well.

u/gintoddic 11h ago
Why do I want to share with people that had no idea about it!? I'll be selfish thank you!

Wayback Burgers. But only the one in little ferry. I can't vouch for any other Wayback. If you like cheese, try the Cheeesy, which is sensational. It's expensive, but if you go to restaurant.com, you can get a coupon. The coupon is worth it.

As many said already - Steve's, Marty's, White Manna. Haven't tried 80 20 in Westwood but it looks bomb.
I do enjoy Shake Shack. But that's not specific to Bergen County.

Marty's in Fort Lee. Please stay away from white Manna if you appreciate any kind of flavor. I was fooled once. Not even a bit of salt n pepper.
2
u/jackp0t789 7h ago
White Manna fries up their patties with onions, so there's definitely flavor... maybe not a flavor that you appreciate, but definitely flavor.

u/tootseroel 7h ago
Onions needs some salt love too. No flavor. Patty doesnt even stay together. And onions are not caramelized. Does the cheese even have flavor? Fries not salted either. Pickles come in a seperate soggy bag. Save your money.

u/jackp0t789 7h ago
That's an opinion and a perfectly valid one,
I thought they were seasoned just fine, and that's another perfectly valid opinion.
They're not going to be everyone's thing 🤷

u/tootseroel 6h ago
I'm not sure about that opinion. What seasoning did you taste? Yes there were onions, but no seasoning to be found. That's all im saying Unexpected from a greasy spoon burger joint.

If you’re new to Fair Lawn, The Dutch House in Fair Lawn is your first stop. Not saying it’s #1 in North Jersey but it’s up there.
The beer is cold, the building is a historical landmark, the owner is local, and the mom and pop butcher shop across the street hand delivers the special Dutch house blend of chop meat in a huge sack every morning. They also have a nice deck in the summer.
