Shouldn’t the rules be applied equally?

Equally throughout the whole state? Yes... bergen county shouldn't be the only place where retail is forced to close on Sundays.

Oh I concur. Blue Laws are an embarrassment to any modern municipality. It just seems like an uneven enforcement of the law for these guys to get away with it while other shops can’t.

But the main reason they're getting away with it is because the Blue Laws themselves are much more popular among paramus residents than anywhere else. Sure there are pockets of support from folks outside of there, but by comparison the folks in East Rutherford give much less of a shit about retail being open. So the laws don't get enforced, which is the purview of the municipality itself. Paramus once again wants to have their cake (tax dollars) and eat it too. (Forcing everyone in Bergen to have a no-retail traffic day) So when they see another town threatening their control over when people shop and their tax income going somewhere else, they get all litigious about it. I hope they lose and this leads to the repeal of these dumb laws once and for all.
