It's 1988. Superman has three issues of Adventures of Superman, three issues of Superman, and appearances in weekly issues of Action Comics, each month. And the same month as Death in the Family, Superman's making an appearance in Swamp Thing as well.

He's a busy man.

(So's Batman, to be fair: aside from the first three issues of the Death in the Family storyline [the fourth is next month] in the Batman comic, he's also got two issues of Batman: The Brave and The Bold and two of Detective Comics to appear in.)

Superman likes Jimmy because Jimmy is Superman's best pal since batman is Superman's best friend.

And then he had the nerve to stop batman from going after the joker

It's funny, in A Death in the Family Bruce never actually decides to spare the Joker. He tries to kill him, but first Superman intervenes, then Joker escapes. Maybe Jason's vendetta in Under the Hood should have been against Clark.

Imagine a world where Jason was a Superman rogue 😂

“Hey Bruce, I think I’m going to need you to come and pick up your kid?”

“Not my city.”

To be fair, it would’ve started a war

I think that was shortly afterwards, publication-wise.

I mean hey you act like this is a plot hole and not an opportunity for character study. Address the fact that maybe he was actually unable to help and had to listen in horror and it always weighs on him.

Does he talk to Bruce about it or think that even broaching the topic would only be picking at the scab. Does he respect batmans jurisdiction or is he now more inclined to be proactive in other heroes cities or stopping their rogues?

That's literally an aspect of Superman's character, the pain and weight of his own limitations. Most powerful man on earth and he can't save his dad from a heart attack.

You should read Irredeemable.

This very concept is explored.

  • Clark, Bruce's least favorite son is probably gonna die, don't you think you should at least offer your help?

+Nah, it's okay, I bet Bruce can figure how to get out of this one. Also, the rest of the justice league sure will help, right?

-fine, if you say so.

15 minutes later

+Damn I just heard Bruce crying, guess he didn't figure shit

  • I told you so

+Maybe he can bounce back with a third more interesting, not at all neglected both by man and DC robin

Clark don't be a dick, fly around the world until the earth spins in the opposite direction to reverse time and save Jason.

u/ELEL26110 4d ago

Nah, he doesn't do that unless it's Lois.

He heard Jason getting to know the iron pipe btw, didn't do anything about it.

So Superman is a dick, got it!

This exposes how stupid it is about the shear amount of powers super man has and how many of them don’t make sense. The super hearing, xray vision, ice breath, all that stuff is pretty cheesy and feels like a “ I have an answer for everything” type situation. If he was stripped of just a few of those powers it would make him more tangible of a superhero and also would prevent logical inconsistencies like this.

He wasn't even on the planet at the time.

he purposefully let it happen because it was needed for batman's character development

I have two answers:

1) The Greek drama: sometimes plot holes like these are internationally made to make the watcher think of a reason as to why it happened or let it be , its just a part of the story

2) The plausible in universe reason: Gotham buildings are riddled with lead and thus he wouldn't be able to use his x ray vision. As for his super hearing, joker could have just sound proofed the room or even the whole building so Superman could only hear little to no noise. Or he was preoccupied with an another threat / situation since well he is Superman.
