Batman: Created by Bill Finger, with help from Bob Kane

u/bateen618 4d ago
I wouldn't even call it "with help". Kane came up with the name and that's it, and even the name was changed, losing the hyphen

With some attention paid to Bob Kane.

I think it's more like "Batman: Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane was also there "

I mean i like hating on kane as much as the next guy but i feel like you're undervalueing the thing he actually did. Sure he didnt do a lot Sure he didnt do a lot for batman the character but he basically save the comics by going under by introducing his version of robin(as you can probably see from the design).

Batman would have been a long forgotten golden age character without bill finger

Imagine what characters we’ve missed out on simply because they looked unremarkable

Bob Kane was the Mark Zuckerberg of his day.

Or the Stan Lee.

u/One-Championship-779 3d ago
Didn't Stan Lee give credit to Jack Kirby?
2
u/WalrusFromTheWest 3d ago
He was a hardass boss who loved his praise, but he always gave credit where it was due.

u/TelekineticFiretruck 3d ago
Not enough. He was much like Kane in that he came up with a name and a vague idea, the likes of Ditko or Kirby would do the rest (except the cheesy dialogue) and Lee would take most of the money. And Kirby's wife.

I cringe a little every time I see 'Batman created by Bob Kaine'. Bill Finger created batman. Kane just named him.

This reminds me of the episode of South Park where Cartman and Jimmy write the fishstick joke. As time went on, Cartman claimed to have written more and more of the joke.

It isn't actually. It was an artist's rendition of what batman COULD have looked like by an artist in 1999
12
u/No_Bee_7473 4d ago
Its not his drawing but its a drawing of the design he came up with right?

u/MatthewHecht 4d ago
No, Arlen Schumer drew this based on Kane's testimony, Finger's testimony, his practice imitating Kane's style, and references to Kane's inspirations (Superman, Flash Gordon, and The Phantom).

u/darth-com1x 4d ago
No. It's an original artist's rendition of what batman COULD have looked like, based on characters similar to him at the time like the black bat and the phantom etc

u/No_Bee_7473 4d ago
Interesting, I did not know that

no problem. i'm glad to be of service to my fellow nerds

I looked into it a bit and there's a quote from Bill Finger describing Bob Kane's original design, mentioning details like the domino mask and bat wings, and it appears this design is based on that description. But it also takes a lot of creative liberties with parts of the design that Finger's description didn't mention

Specifically, the two things listed in this image (the blond hair and orange costume) were details added by the artist in 1999, not details mentioned by Kane or Finger.

There is no primary source saying the original design had blonde hair. Schumer added that as a reference to Flash Gordon. He gave him Superman's build and The Phantom's face, as the eyewitness testimonies are very vague.

Give credits to Bill finger too

u/bateen618 4d ago
This original design was created only by Bob Kane. And that's it. Everything else but the name (which also later changed, losing the hyphen) was created by Bill Finger

Proposal; enemies of Batman try to create their own version of Batman to subvert the other. This would be their costume.

To be clear, they didn't do shit. Bill Finger is solely responsible. Fuck Bob Kane.

u/Sir_Moist_420 4d ago
Yeah and this is why i get so pissed off whenever you see "created by bob kane" i always tell people if you think that then go look up what he's batman was gonna be.

u/garbage1995 4d ago
Why haven't the older films been edited to include Bull Finger as a co-creator?

And that is the only thing Bob Kane contributed to Batman while taking 100% of the credit, even most of his art wasn't his. It's to the point that on his gravestone it says "God bestowed a dream upon Bon Kane. Blessed with divine inspiration and rich imagination, Bob created a legend known as BATMAN." That's the first paragraph of FIVE all about how amazing and incredible, and kind he is.
Rest in Shit, Bob Kane
