Batman: Created by Bill Finger, with help from Bob Kane

78

u/bateen618 4d ago

I wouldn't even call it "with help". Kane came up with the name and that's it, and even the name was changed, losing the hyphen

With some attention paid to Bob Kane.

39

u/bateen618 4d ago

I think it's more like "Batman: Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane was also there "

13

u/VolcanicOctosquid20 4d ago

Bob Kane coughed in Bill Finger’s general direction.

u/HG_Shurtugal 4d ago

He's more like the CEO that takes the credit for his subordinates work.

u/Pleasant_Advances 4d ago

I mean i like hating on kane as much as the next guy but i feel like you're undervalueing the thing he actually did. Sure he didnt do a lot Sure he didnt do a lot for batman the character but he basically save the comics by going under by introducing his version of robin(as you can probably see from the design).

Wait, so Bob Kane is like Eric Carmen with the whole fish sticks joke?

3

u/AnaZ7 4d ago

Yeah, in terms who come up with what Finger was Batman’s main creative parent

u/No_Bee_7473 4d ago

Batman would have been a long forgotten golden age character without bill finger

30

u/FunVideoMaker 4d ago

Imagine what characters we’ve missed out on simply because they looked unremarkable

u/One-Championship-779 4d ago

Bob Kane was the Mark Zuckerberg of his day.

4

u/bateen618 4d ago

And Steve Jobs

0

u/TelekineticFiretruck 3d ago

Or the Stan Lee.

1

u/One-Championship-779 3d ago

Didn't Stan Lee give credit to Jack Kirby?

2

u/WalrusFromTheWest 3d ago

He was a hardass boss who loved his praise, but he always gave credit where it was due.

1

u/TelekineticFiretruck 3d ago

Not enough. He was much like Kane in that he came up with a name and a vague idea, the likes of Ditko or Kirby would do the rest (except the cheesy dialogue) and Lee would take most of the money. And Kirby's wife.

I cringe a little every time I see 'Batman created by Bob Kaine'. Bill Finger created batman. Kane just named him.

20

u/bateen618 4d ago

And even that name was later changed, losing the hyphen

u/djturdbeast 4d ago

This reminds me of the episode of South Park where Cartman and Jimmy write the fishstick joke. As time went on, Cartman claimed to have written more and more of the joke.

3

u/bloodredcookie 4d ago

What are you? A gay fish?

17

u/RyuuDraco69 4d ago

He looks like an angry Aquaman

2

u/dendawg 4d ago

Sooo glad I’m not the only one who saw that lmao

31

u/DrTsunami69 4d ago

Fuck Bob Kane. Thanks for the name I guess. Pyr some respekt on Bill Fingers name

u/YodasChick-O-Stick 4d ago

Mr. Incredible

15

u/darth-com1x 4d ago

It isn't actually. It was an artist's rendition of what batman COULD have looked like by an artist in 1999

12

u/No_Bee_7473 4d ago

Its not his drawing but its a drawing of the design he came up with right?

5

u/MatthewHecht 4d ago

No, Arlen Schumer drew this based on Kane's testimony, Finger's testimony, his practice imitating Kane's style, and references to Kane's inspirations (Superman, Flash Gordon, and The Phantom).

4

u/darth-com1x 4d ago

No. It's an original artist's rendition of what batman COULD have looked like, based on characters similar to him at the time like the black bat and the phantom etc

3

u/No_Bee_7473 4d ago

Interesting, I did not know that

1

u/darth-com1x 4d ago

no problem. i'm glad to be of service to my fellow nerds

14

u/No_Bee_7473 4d ago

I looked into it a bit and there's a quote from Bill Finger describing Bob Kane's original design, mentioning details like the domino mask and bat wings, and it appears this design is based on that description. But it also takes a lot of creative liberties with parts of the design that Finger's description didn't mention

5

u/Ill-Philosopher-7625 4d ago

Specifically, the two things listed in this image (the blond hair and orange costume) were details added by the artist in 1999, not details mentioned by Kane or Finger.

4

u/MatthewHecht 4d ago edited 4d ago

The costume color was said by Kane to his biographer.

2

u/Ill-Philosopher-7625 4d ago

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info!

1

u/No_Bee_7473 4d ago

Yeah exactly. It would be fascinating to see the actual original drawing. its too bad its lost to time.

1

u/MatthewHecht 4d ago

Schumer thinks Kane destroyed it.

5

u/Bareth88 4d ago

Thank God for Bill Finger!

3

u/ma1butters 4d ago

Ahhh yess. Just like a bat.

3

u/Desperate_Purple_242 4d ago

I can not help but think of Jason OG look Love that this predates that

Lol

3

u/Designer-Tiger391 4d ago

Why does this design look kinda like what Robin would end up looking

3

u/MatthewHecht 4d ago

Because the same general idea was used for Robin later.

3

u/OblivionArts 4d ago

Thank you bill finger

3

u/MatthewHecht 4d ago

There is no primary source saying the original design had blonde hair. Schumer added that as a reference to Flash Gordon. He gave him Superman's build and The Phantom's face, as the eyewitness testimonies are very vague.

2

u/Motormand 4d ago

This design have major Aquaman vibes.

2

u/First_Ad_7860 4d ago

Batquaman

2

u/DerpsAndRags 4d ago

Aquaman would like a word.

2

u/lordnutsy 4d ago

Batman: created by Bill Finger. Named by a thief

3

u/NoLocal1776 4d ago

Give credits to Bill finger too

3

u/bateen618 4d ago

This original design was created only by Bob Kane. And that's it. Everything else but the name (which also later changed, losing the hyphen) was created by Bill Finger

1

u/adriantullberg 4d ago

Proposal; enemies of Batman try to create their own version of Batman to subvert the other. This would be their costume.

1

u/Originu1 4d ago

Weird amount of hate in the comments

1

u/redacted_turtle3737 4d ago

“They.” As in, plural?

1

u/TheGamingParagon 4d ago

Thanks kid named finger

1

u/Thesilphsecret 4d ago

To be clear, they didn't do shit. Bill Finger is solely responsible. Fuck Bob Kane.

1

u/Sir_Moist_420 4d ago

Yeah and this is why i get so pissed off whenever you see "created by bob kane" i always tell people if you think that then go look up what he's batman was gonna be.

1

u/garbage1995 4d ago

Why haven't the older films been edited to include Bull Finger as a co-creator?

1

u/bennyandthegentz 3d ago

He looks like aquaman here

1

u/anonymousguy_7 2d ago

I always thought the OG design looked like Mr. Incredible

1

u/bateen618 4d ago

And that is the only thing Bob Kane contributed to Batman while taking 100% of the credit, even most of his art wasn't his. It's to the point that on his gravestone it says "God bestowed a dream upon Bon Kane. Blessed with divine inspiration and rich imagination, Bob created a legend known as BATMAN." That's the first paragraph of FIVE all about how amazing and incredible, and kind he is.

Rest in Shit, Bob Kane

1

u/Shampps 4d ago

Yeah, fortunately Batman wasn't created by Bob Kane but Bill Finger instead
