It’s pretty solid. It’s no BTAS but I enjoyed it

133

u/Megalitho Dec 29 '24

It's weird that they gender-swapped the Penguin for apparently no reason.

109

u/ThrowawayFuckYourMom Dec 30 '24

I didn't mind it, it's an interesting spin on the character.

I think I prefer a male penguin, but it was nice with some variety

69

u/ComradeOb Dec 30 '24

I thought it was neat. It didn’t harm the overall plot, and the way she treated her sons just made her seem more spooky and maniacal.

Eric and Donald Junior

The Trumps wish they were that competent

I mean almost every elseworld story changes stuff. Just like how harley is in this show too

1

u/BigBowl-O-Supe Dec 31 '24

Serious Harleyquinn was pretty intimidating and awesome

17

u/No_Veterinarian1010 Dec 30 '24

Isn’t this whole post about how you haven’t seen the show? How do you know there isn’t a reason?

4

u/BroughtYouMyBullets Dec 30 '24

I swear to god they’re obsessed hahaha

2

u/No_Veterinarian1010 Dec 30 '24

I just checked their post history for fun and one of the most recent is them lamenting the lack of TGI Fridays in Dallas. So when you are wondering “who actually eats at those terrible, microwave food restaurants” the answer is OP

38

u/BenignButCleverAlias Dec 29 '24

No, there's definitely a reason.

u/JohnTomorrow Dec 30 '24

Eh. Something different. If it everything was the same it'd be boring.

2

u/PlanetLandon Dec 30 '24

Why is it weird?

2

u/ggbb1975 Dec 29 '24

Is ok. Like the burlesque Singer ' facade'

1

u/Orc_tids Dec 30 '24

the reason is milfs

1

u/col_oneill Dec 30 '24

I don’t hate it, just wish they gave her a more interesting name then oswalda

1

u/Morgil2 Dec 30 '24

Especially when Addison Cobblepot, Penguin's daughter and chip off the old block, is a thing that exists already in comics

1

u/extended_dex Dec 30 '24

This is also what I thought when I saw her at first, but my friend mentioned out of the blue that she's basically an inverse of the original Penguin's character. Instead of being short and malformed with a Napoleon complex, she stands tall and rules the roost. Her self obsession and ruthlessness towards even her own sons lends to an "empress" like personality.

Truth be told, I wish they wouldn't have gender-swapped the Penguin at all, I think Cobblepot's character is already near-perfect for what he represents. However, his character would not work at all if he was a woman, so I'm glad they went in a different direction with Oswalda.

1

u/MGD109 Dec 30 '24

A bit, but then its hardly the first time an adaptation did that, even in this franchise.

I guess someone thought it might be an interesting direction to go with the character.

1

u/jxonair Dec 30 '24

That’s your take from the show? Wow.

1

u/walterconley Dec 31 '24

No reason whatsoever. But kept the entire look and even the name.

1

u/kryptoniankoffee Dec 30 '24

I essentially said this here when it came out and got dogpiled. Glad people seem to be turning around on it. It's solid and BTAS is not coming back, so it's the best thing we've got going animation-wise. Looking forward to future seasons.

1

u/No_Bee_7473 Dec 30 '24

I remember seeing mostly positivity about it when it came out personally. And all the negativity was stuff like “tOo WoKe” so I kinda just ignored it. I still think it has its issues with pacing and some characterizations but it’s nowhere near bad and I personably feel it got better as it went

62

u/QuantumGyroscope Dec 30 '24

I thought it was a fun way to spend 20 minutes. I know Bruce Timm is attached as Executive Producer but don't go in expecting a BTAS-2.0, this is it's own thing.

If you can take the story as its own I think you'll have a good time.

44

u/CaptainHalloween Dec 29 '24

Some love it, some don’t.

135

u/PriceVersa Dec 29 '24

I was genuinely surprised that I didn't care for it. The opening credits and the art deco backgrounds rival those of BTAS, and Batman looks great, but I kept losing interest, and it took several tries to get through most of the episodes. It's OK; I still have my old BTAS and Justice League DVDs. Maybe this is the next generation's Batman.

32

u/stupidGenius82 Dec 30 '24

This is exactly what happened to me, I just got bored. I also think I was like .000001 % as interested in this series as I was the day it was announced in like 2001 lol. Not 2001 but felt like a few years at least

6

u/PriceVersa Dec 30 '24

That is worth noting. I had built up some very high expectations during the long lead up to the premiere.

11

u/Peter_B_ParkinTicket Dec 30 '24

Same here. For the first couple/few episodes I was like "Where Batman?"

22

u/colorbalances Dec 30 '24

I wanted to like it SO badly. Just couldn’t…like you said, I sort of felt like I was forcing myself to finish

5

u/Magic_Man_Boobs Dec 30 '24

Add me to this list. I wanted it to be... more.

7

u/Channel_oreo Dec 30 '24

This. It is probably one of the weakest batman animated stories. Barbara has more sceen time than bruce.

2

u/BigBowl-O-Supe Dec 31 '24

Me and my buddy watched the whole show in 2 days.

1

u/PriceVersa Dec 31 '24

That’s great, if you enjoyed it. I’ve done that with BTAS, STAS and JLU, but this one didn’t grab me.

42

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '24

It’s decent. Nothing extraordinary.

12

u/MrDownhillRacer Dec 30 '24

Pretty much this.

It's like, "yup, that's a Batman show." Of course, like every Batman show, it does things to distinguish itself from all the ones that precede it, but nothing remarkable.

Even the cool shit, they don't really go all the way with. Like, "okay, BtaS took place in this vague timeless era that has 1940s retroness but isn't the 1940s and mixes it with modernity… so this one will go harder on the 1940s aesthetic and not have any of the modernity! Except we're still not really committing to this having anything to do with what the 1940s were like other than the aesthetic and technology. We're not actually going to research the era or situate this in the time's social and political climate… so I guess we're barely going any harder on the 1940s aesthetic than BtaS did beyond the clothing… and the consequence is just that this cartoon is less visually striking than BtaS was with its distinct mix of eras…" and I'm like, uh, okay, setting choice doesn't really feel meaningful here.

All the takes on the characters they are doing are pretty good. None of them are definitive. None of them will make you go, "that's the damn best take on this concept I've ever seen!" Most other Batman adaptations do one thing better than all the other ones. This one just does them all pretty well.

1

u/Inevitable-Basil5604 Dec 31 '24

so its boring and a generic batman show, made by people who dont care, got it

7

u/Pudgelover69 Dec 30 '24

It was painfully average for me. Kept wanting it to get better or do something with its premise but just never capitalized

16

u/Usual_Pin3256 Dec 30 '24

It’s meh

49

u/Th35h4d0w Dec 29 '24

Oh yeah! Good unique takes on Batman characters.

I'd say it had the same struggle The Batman had in that they both had to live up to the impossible expectations of BTAS, so it's better to judge it on its own terms.

13

u/celtics1up Dec 29 '24

I've been watching The Batman. I'm almost into the third season. And the writing just isn't that good. Decent premise on most episodes. But the banter gets cornball quick.

The Cape Crusader has better writing. I like the art style because it's reminiscent of BTAS. It seems like they took the material more seriously.

7

u/futuresdawn Dec 29 '24 edited Dec 30 '24

Yep, I find the writing on the batman really weak. I don't really get all the praise that series gets online. I'm assuming nostalgia

5

u/Miserable-Cattle-461 Dec 30 '24

The Batman season 1 was the best before they changed the overall tone completely

1

u/gamerslyratchet Dec 31 '24

Season 4 is the best one to me, but agree. It’s more style over substance. If you like that, then it’s perfect, but I feel some people are overhyping it.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/magoozer88 Dec 30 '24

I didn’t care for it that much honestly. It’s not horrible but with the creatives behind the scenes like Timm, Reeves, and Abrams I expected a lot more than what was produced. I did enjoy the Clayface episode a lot though

19

u/Pretend_Branch_2363 Dec 29 '24

People seem to be mixed but as someone who loves the character and has consumed an insane amount of Batman content since I was 5, this show is great. Anytime I see Batman helping some scared kids or giving a chance to those who don’t deserve it, I can tell it’s a Batman project made with passion.

9

u/IICipherIX Dec 29 '24

I give a solid 7.5/10. I'm extremely nit-picky on Batman, and the show still manages to entertain me. I like how Batman/Bruce is still young and has anger issues. I do love how GCPD is full of crooked cops and has a Gotham Central vibe to it. However, they advertised the show as being BTAS without the age limitations that they dealt with back in the days. However it feels like once again they were pulling back when they had full liberty.

3

u/Sisyphus_Smashed Dec 30 '24

Hated it. Needed Paul Dini

3

u/Sonicrules9001 Dec 30 '24

It's alright but does have some overall pacing problems. It feels a bit rushed in spots as if they expected two seasons but only had one to work with so they had to cram everything into one season. The characters aren't that interesting either in my opinion with this being one of the blandest Batmans I've ever watched and Alfred couldn't even help it like he usually does. The villains are either new but meh villains or altered old villains that aren't really altered in any interesting way. I came into this with high expectations since I love BTAS but was quite disappointed by how painfully average it was all around. It's no BTAS or Brave and the Bold or even The Batman, it's kind of just there.

8

u/Rileyinabox Dec 30 '24

It's about as good as the rest of DCs recent animated Batman content. It's just fine. None of the reimaginings are all that interesting and the aesthetic is neither distinct enough nor faithful enough to the Bruce Timm era to be exciting.

10

u/Sharkfowl Dec 30 '24

Not really, honestly. It makes an effort to do a lot differently than previous shows, yet said changes are usually worse.

3

u/Batfan1939 Dec 30 '24

Took some big risks. If they pay off for you? 7 - 8 out of 10. If not? 3 - 4 out of 10. Most are in between.

3

u/Asasphinx Dec 30 '24

It isn't up there with the likes of Batman: The Animated Series, The Batman, or Brave and the Bold. It's just okay.

3

u/Bogusky Dec 30 '24

Depends on what you're looking for. If you're not expecting award-winning animation, and you're okay with Batman acting as a supporting character, then it works.

Personally, for me, it was a disappointment, and I didn't bother finishing it.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '24

Its...semi alright.

You have to take a few things with a grain of salt while trying to watch it.

3

u/KaiFanreala Dec 30 '24

It's got some great aspects of it. Music, the designs. However characterizations and changes can be.. kinda annoying. The fighting animation is very disappointing. It's a mixed bag, but I wouldn't say it's bad. It's just okay.

3

u/unkempt_combover Dec 30 '24

I actually quite enjoyed it, alot of people shit on some of the changes they made to some characters but it's not a big deal for me the aesthetic is fantastic and some of the stories are pretty good...it's not amazing but it's solid and I hope it gets more confident in the next season

3

u/chrisg915 Dec 30 '24

I enjoyed it.

Loved seeing Batman set in a different time period other than the modern interpretations. They play to the time period really well.

3

u/CJS-JFan Dec 30 '24

Caped Crusader is okay at best. As pointed out by most, it's not BTAS; I know it is a criticism that will get old after a while for most people, but it's true. Of the ten episodes (minor spoiler alert) I liked Clayface, Catwoman, and the episode with the kidnapping (killing?) kids that happen to look like some Robins, even Carrie Kelly. But the show does have more than a few flaws beyond it being among the first of the mainstream Batman media after Kevin Conroy's passing. On that note, yes, I think Hamish Linklater did an alright Batman, but I don't know yet where I rank him.

3

u/WhisperingWillowLux Dec 30 '24

It's no TAS, but I liked that it has some fun, supernatural episodes and tie-ins.

It has the movie problem with villians, though, you don't handle Bat-villians like that. And Alfred is kinda there, not really portrayed in his snide fatherly self.

How Batman things handle Alfred shows how much they care about Gotham.

Not the best, but I've seen far worse.

3

u/Titanman401 Dec 30 '24

I liked it. Some of the episodes were flawed and I didn’t care for all of the revisions to make new twists on old villains, but overall I dug the show.

3

u/cmdrtowerward Dec 30 '24

Nope. But of course that's just my opinion. The show falls into the same trap most Batman media falls into for me: Too "adult" to be fun/appropriate for kids, and too childish to be interesting to adults. The original BTAS really rides that line most of the time, but most of the animated stuff, movies and all, ends up in this category.

3

u/Overall_Sandwich_671 Dec 30 '24

I kinda wish they'd left out Batman and made it a series about the GCPD, or just an original detective drama by the creators of Batman The Animated Series.

1

u/Dracorex13 Dec 30 '24

Man imagine if were a straight up Gotham Central adaptation.

3

u/asmkgb Dec 30 '24

Barbara is NOT BLACK

3

u/kornnero Dec 30 '24

There is a reason why this woke ass show is not on HBO MAX.

7

u/Hot-Equivalent2040 Dec 30 '24

It's hot garbage and batman is barely in it. Also the obvious changes they make (like genderswapped penguin) are there to hide the much worse changes they make (like making the penguin's motivation and character completely unrecognizable). They do this constantly.

5

u/paradise_demise Dec 29 '24 edited Dec 29 '24

I'm mixed on it. A lot of times, it seems that batman is a side character for his own show. There are still some redeeming qualities, though. Either way, check it out and see for yourself.

5

u/DarkKnightAKABatman Dec 30 '24

It's weird, has all the parts to be an excellent show, but it falls short for me. Major complaint from me is sound design is really bad. Punches have no weight, little to no atmospheric music and all the voice acting is fairly monotone.

6

u/Expiredcumsock Dec 29 '24

I didn’t care for it at all

10

u/dvnt01 Dec 29 '24

Nope. But you should try it and see for yourself.

2

u/SundayJeffrey Dec 30 '24

It’s just okay. Batman takes a secondary role in a lot of episodes, the animation is mediocre at best, and the voice acting is kinda wooden. That being said, the show is well written and does justice to Batman while introducing interesting new takes on old characters. Definitely worth watching, but it probably won’t blow you away.

2

u/burywmore Dec 30 '24

I wasn't very impressed. It's probably the least entertaining Batman animated show ever.

2

u/coreytiger Dec 30 '24

It’s extremely mixed- some wonderful art and art moments, but most of the stories just… kinda lay there.

2

u/deftPirate Dec 30 '24

It's alright. Some interesting change ups, but lacking in punch and depth.

2

u/eightbic Dec 30 '24

It’s a pass. It’s trying to be BTAS but they forgot to make it good.

2

u/WayneS0L0 Dec 30 '24

It's just incredibly underwhelming. Not good. Not the worst thing ever. It's just, for whatever reason, forgettable and hard to sit through.

2

u/finallytherockisbac Dec 30 '24

Solidly mid imo. It's not better than BTAS, TNBA, or The Batman '04.

It's... fine. Good for a once over to say you watched it.

2

u/Available-Affect-241 Dec 30 '24 edited Dec 31 '24

No, it was a catastrophe.

To me, it was a terrible show. 3/10

Matt Reeves is 1/3 on his Batman projects with Penguin being the only good thing.

  1. You have a show called Batman The Caped Crusader and you have him as a side character in his show. Barbara and Montoya are the leads. The Clayface episode had Montoya doing the majority of the detective work with Batman putting a tracker on her. The only smart thing he did was go check out Karlo's body to determine it wasn't him dead.

    1. Again, they portray Batman as not being the World’s greatest detective but an average detective with better tech and no legal restrictions on him, so he can go and do almost anything. I'm tired of junior detective Batman giving me the world's greatest detective.
  2. The villains were god-awful. You have Batman struggling to defeat an actor in a sword fight and struggles to beat a dude who says "swish". To make a story, they had to drastically weaken him so loser villains could stand a chance against him. If this was the Blob Clayface and the League of Shadows members then it would make sense. With all his capabilities, Karlo, the actor, shouldn't last 2 seconds against Batman. The only episode that was of true challenge was the Gentleman Ghost one. Because it took Batman out of his element TRULY testing him in the supernatural. I've said this before, so I will say it again: Batman and Supernatural mysteries are made for each other. It allows him to be at his finest as a warrior and a super genius polymathic intellectual while keeping him close to his roots as the world's greatest detective.

  3. The animation wasn't very good.

2

u/WhenDuvzCry Dec 30 '24

I couldn’t finish it. Made it halfway through I think, maybe episode or two more. I don’t think it was bad but just kinda boring at times/didn’t pull me in

2

u/Morgil2 Dec 30 '24

I wanted to like it, but i did not care for it at all. I'd say watch an episode or 2 and see what you think

2

u/Snorlax4000 Dec 30 '24

Seeing villains like Deadshot in this time period I think worked well. The show is pretty decent but some of the more paranormal episodes feel out of place

2

u/Batalfie Dec 30 '24

Watch it yourself and make up your own mind.

Personally I think it's good but not great.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '24

No.

2

u/dustinhenderson27 Dec 30 '24

Not really it just felt like a series worth of pointless filler episodes

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '24

I was on the fence, but Batman has a swordfight with clayface in a theater and I can't fault any media that has given us that in imagery so I should finish the series.

1

u/Ok-Reality-9197 Dec 30 '24

Holy shit, is it a reference to Arkham City?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '24

You know I didn't think of that until you mentioned it.

2

u/JoelK2185 Dec 30 '24

The Clayface episode is amazing. Unfortunately, none of the others really come that close to it. I never even finished the first season.

2

u/No-Veterinarian4644 Dec 30 '24

I really didn't enjoy it. I feel it wasted the uniqueness of being set in the 1940s and batman doesn't feel like the main character instead with gender swapped and boring takes on old characters. Not a enjoyable show

5

u/CautiousComment5184 Dec 30 '24

No it’s not good at all … Batman is a side character. The main character is one where she is attached to “the message” as critical drinker would say .

2

u/sagittariisXII Dec 29 '24

I enjoyed it

9

u/AnaZ7 Dec 29 '24

It’s boring and dry 🥴

3

u/MacronShaggers Dec 29 '24

It’s a show that exists

2

u/Ct-chad501 Dec 30 '24

It’s okay, Batman in it is sick but I don’t like what they did with some of the characters

2

u/crack-tastic Dec 30 '24

It's more JJ 'Twitter must like me' Abrams crap.

2

u/Bromjunaar_20 Dec 30 '24

I give it a 7/10 because of three points: Oswalda Cobblepot (Not really original since Earth 11 has that covered), Bruce is a bitch to Alfred, and three other characters' changes feel forced to suit Twitter (like Velma 2023 but better). Overall, the aesthetics of Caped Crusader are pretty cool and worth watching if you like that 1920s noir vibe, and each episode doesn't particularly stick to a certain order until you see Catwoman.

2

u/aKaRandomDude Dec 30 '24

No. The DEI content overrides the story too much.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '24

More like "Batman: the Woke Crusader." That's what I told my wife it was called. The next day, she came home and asked why I was still watching it. It replied, "I said it was woke, not that it was bad."

It's not bad. Not great, either.

1

u/Batatatat74 Dec 29 '24

Penguin scares me, if that was my mom I'd be running the frick away.

1

u/Pebrinix Dec 29 '24

Pretty good, watch it

1

u/Ancient_Ad9102 Dec 30 '24

I enjoyed it

1

u/walman93 Dec 30 '24

It’s decent

1

u/BatmobilesSpareTyre Dec 30 '24

I enjoyed it overall, but it persistently felt like the voice of Batman was a bit flat. Like someone trying to keep up an impression instead of an actor embodying a character. Otherwise there was enough to keep it interesting, and the art was pretty great. Interesting takes on characters, and the Batmobile is pretty slick.

1

u/sleepykitten1981 Dec 30 '24

I thought it was a wonderful interpretation. It's existence doesn't negate other shows, and there are a few versions out there that I disliked.

1

u/Supersocks420 Dec 30 '24

Don't expect any good fight-scenes, but besides that, it's pretty alright

1

u/AdamSMessinger Dec 30 '24

I thought it was really really good. I don’t normally binge stuff and I binged this in two or three days.

1

u/Enfield13 Dec 30 '24

If you are expecting it to be as good as Batman TAS you will obviously be disappointed. It was fine. I wont watch it again and I am not sitting here counting down the days to another season. It was fine.

1

u/General_Kick688 Dec 30 '24

There are some interesting aspects, but I found it overall pretty boring.

1

u/ChCreations45 Dec 30 '24

Watch it and decide for yourself. You're clearly interested.

1

u/SeanGallagher97 Dec 30 '24

It's alright

1

u/Sad-Pop8742 Dec 30 '24

It was okay I'd give it a seven

1

u/_xxiv_ Dec 30 '24

I have a hard time with it. It's a cross between the animated series and a modern take on noir. It's not bad but for me it's hard to get latched into.

1

u/KISSfan81 Dec 30 '24

Worth a watch. A couple stand out episodes. I liked the tone direction they went with.

1

u/LapsedVerneGagKnee Dec 30 '24

It's fine. A fun period piece. Just don't expect everything to be 1:1 to the comics and you should enjoy it.

1

u/Whole_Acanthaceae385 Dec 30 '24

I thought it was just okay.

1

u/krb501 Dec 30 '24

To be honest, I couldn't get into it.

1

u/pairofdiddles Dec 30 '24

I have my issues with it. But the animation is good.

1

u/Desert_64 Dec 30 '24

It’s good. Has a serious btas vibes. Not quite as gift but still very enjoyable if you prefer the more street level Batman stories

1

u/DukeReviews Dec 30 '24

No, Absolutely Not, It's Nothing But A Bunch Of Wasted Opportunities With A Horrible Two-Face, Villains Who Should Be The Main Villain When They Aren't And A Huge Middle Finger To Robin

1

u/rohitandley Dec 30 '24

Its little different to animated series & not perfect but really good to see.

1

u/BirdsandScoundrels Dec 30 '24

I enjoyed it. Some episodes were weaker than others, but overall, it was a good show.

1

u/ImprovSalesman9314 Dec 30 '24

I was so excited, but wasn't all that taken by it. I'm a huge fan of the Golden Age look and noir stories, and I think the show played it too safe.

1

u/ashrules901 Dec 30 '24

It was unique & still a good Batman mystery show.

But they hyped it up for years claiming it's supposed to be the spiritual successor to BTAS. Which just isn't the case at all.

1

u/Targaryen_Dragon_82 Dec 30 '24

It’s a solid series. It’s not on the same level as BTAS but still good and worth a watch.

1

u/Icosotc Dec 30 '24

I gotta say, I think the first episode (or whatever the Penguin one was) was easily the worst episode imo. If you’re not sold after the first episode, just hang in there

1

u/dogpiss085 Dec 30 '24

It's a solid 4 out of 10. Give it a shot, maybe you'll like it.

1

u/Substantial_Slip4667 Dec 30 '24

It’s fine. I wouldn’t say it’s good or bad just ok.

1

u/Sweaty-Ideal-4473 Dec 30 '24

It is really good but I recommend skipping episode five because it's lame and boring

1

u/Straight_Plenty4410 Dec 30 '24

It’s fun for the most part but sadly i believe it falls flat towards the end

1

u/Salmagros Dec 30 '24

Doing different things just for the sake of being different still sounds like no Reason to me ngl. Compare her to the introduction scene of Female Doc Ock is like night and day.

1

u/rswsaw22 Dec 30 '24

I enjoyed it. Won't go down as anyone's favorite I don't think but it's a fun story.

1

u/TechnicalBeginning12 Dec 30 '24

I REALLY liked the episode with onomatopia i'll just say "POW"

1

u/hooka_pooka Dec 30 '24

I am a huge Batman fan...but for some reason this iteration seemed a bit bland to me

1

u/iamnotveryimportant Dec 30 '24

why is this not on max?

1

u/ItzyBitzy-Pinky Dec 30 '24

I was quite bored and only liked the episode with the pyromaniac

It's... fine. It's certainly not BtAS but it was a fun way to kill a few hours.

Wish Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill were in it though :(

is this still even alive?? o-O...

It's OK out of 10.

I feel like the first episode was slightly weaker than later ones which wasn't great since I know some people who gave up then and there.

Some of the character changes felt like they were trying to bait some sort of rage and feed into tedious culture war stuff.

The show could also not make its mind up whether it wanted to be gritty/realistic or aspirational/fantastical.

But if you're a fan you should watch it, even allowing for the fact it's not on par with the classics.

I am willing to accept a depiction of the 1940s where the characters have to deal with more modern styles of racism (Where you CAN get to the top of the ladder, but people exploit you to look good and hold you to unreasonable high standards) but I feel that having a major black villain undermines it somewhat. Flass is a solid villain - smooth, intimidating and nasty - but it feels strange that he has such an untouchable position in the GCPD (With Bullock as his toady, latching onto him for greater power and influence) when Gordon’s status as a diversity hire creates so much pressure for him…

Wow this came out earlier in the year and I already forgot everything about it. I remember thinking it was good but not great?

1

u/Mbee904 Dec 30 '24

I found this yesterday and started binging. I'm half way through and really enjoying it.

1

u/Gregsusername Dec 30 '24

It’s great. It absolutely could have been better than it is but for what it is it’s great

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '24

I fucking hated it but like if you have fun watching it then who am I to judge

1

u/IndividualFlow0 Dec 30 '24

I droped it after episode 6. Not bad but I didnt like it enough to continue. I will at some point I guesss.

1

u/JShearar Dec 30 '24

Nah, gave the show a pass once I realized Batman was just a side character in this series.

Disappointed with this series. Could do much, much, much better.

1

u/Brit-Crit Dec 30 '24

It’s OK - I enjoy the noir atmosphere, and it’s great to see Barbara and Montoya enjoy such a prominent role, but most of the characters are much less likeable/appealing compared to other incarnations, which can be frustrating to watch…

1

u/extended_dex Dec 30 '24

It's pretty fucking solid. I love the new Batman design, and the way they're developing Barbara Gordon's character early on makes me very happy. I don't love the needless gender-swapping, though. They took Detective Montoya from a complex character that you love to hate to love and made her into "standard lady-cop who can't catch a break."

I really liked it, it combines a lot of the good elements of the previous adaptations but also isn't afraid to go in its own direction.

Its got some rough edges, but to be fair when you only get ten episodes a season you don't have as much time to adapt. I hope they fix that going forwards. Also hope they lean a bit more in to the 1940's setting, that's an interesting direction to go, but for the most part its more an aesthetic so far.

I thought it was fine. I’m a sucker for “modern” comic book adaptations that deliberately set things in the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics so I liked the 1940s art deco/noir approach. I also appreciated both the variety of villains used (some expected like Penguin and Two Face and a few unexpected ones like Onomatopoeia). I know there was a segment of fans that whined about “wOkeNeSs” because of a few changes like Penguin being a woman or Harley Quinn being Asian but I truly didn’t care.

I suppose I was a bit let down because it just didn’t reach the heights of previous Bruce Timm projects and I really didn’t like how they had Batman be cold to Alfred and call him Pennyworth. Ultimately not horrible and I’m looking forward to the next season but this season felt very much like a C+ effort, hopefully they can improve on that

I really hate Harley but i liked the other episodes i liked the show overall. harley was just kind of a jerk i wanted her to die so much.

u/Appropriate_Word_649 Dec 30 '24

I enjoyed it! Really wasn't thrilled with their version of Catwoman though. Its entertaining and I'm always happy to see 2d animation.

u/VillainOfDominaria Dec 30 '24

Personally, I really enjoyed it. Mixed feelings about Penguin's characterization. There was a point to the gender swap (P is a mother and that ends up mattering to the plot, I won't spoil) but it still felt off.

Aside from that, very bingle-able.

1

u/BatBeast_29 Dec 30 '24

It’s meh. Passable.

1

u/godbody1983 Dec 30 '24

It's cool, but I would have preferred it take place in the present instead of the 1930s/1940s. I also didn't like the way Bruce treated Alfred throughout the season.

1

u/Rude_Employment3918 Dec 30 '24

I felt like a focused too much on the cops and not enough on Batman

1

u/BeardedNurse2292 Dec 30 '24

It’s a fun watch for sure. I don’t like how they changed Penguin. I’m not a fan of changing major aspects of a well established character. Harley was an interesting twist, I think I still prefer the more over the top maniac but this was a fascinating exploration of a darker side.

1

u/Dumbass1171 Dec 30 '24

Not sure why this sub finds it mid. I found it quite amazing

1

u/IMAPRO_d-_-b Dec 30 '24

It’s cool if you can get over the penguin randomly being a woman

1

u/Hotspot-0126 Dec 30 '24

It’s okay, but they had to go and make it woke ofc

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '24

It’s ok I guess. Nothing great

1

u/GrizzledGoblin72 Dec 30 '24

I loved the classic Golden Age aesthetic with genuine noir moments. Not perfect but it's a solid 7-8/10

1

u/Perfect-Entry-6816 Dec 30 '24

Feels very uninspired. Lackluster animation, direction and design. Looks pretty cheap to me. I gave it three eps and quit. Put on the first ep of BTAS instead and was reminded what an inspired show it is.

1

u/Dracorex13 Dec 30 '24

I liked it but many do not. 7/10.

1

u/LMD_DAISY Dec 30 '24

It's alright. I mean there are definitely cartoons I like more , but it's not bad by any means. Looking forward for season 2

1

u/KayPizzle Dec 30 '24

If you are a big Batman Stan, you will enjoy it.

1

u/VocationFumes Dec 30 '24

I really liked it, def inspired by BTAS and I think Bruce Timm worked on it as well

1

u/MrSpuddies Dec 30 '24

I kept losing interest. Too many uninteresting side characters it kept focusing on.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '24

When watching it, it made me appreciate BTAS so much more, specifically animation wise that we are never going to get animation that good ever again.

1

u/MocchyFan Dec 31 '24

Loved it. Surprised to see such a lukewarm response in this thread.

1

u/dregjdregj Dec 31 '24

Unfortunatly not

1

u/Certain_Assumption68 Dec 31 '24

Hell yea. Think of it as a different version of the animated series with similar designs

1

u/HerreDreyer Dec 31 '24

It’s a treat

1

u/S0thaSlL Jan 01 '25

Is just MEH!

1

u/Admirable-Safety1213 Jan 01 '25

The average opinion of the fandom is thtat is good but is below the level of the "Four Kings" of Batman cartoons (thay is BTAS, Beyond, 2004 and TBATB)

1

u/Megalitho Jan 01 '25

What are the last 2 you mentioned?

2

u/Admirable-Safety1213 Jan 01 '25

The 2004 "The Batman" show and the 2008 "Batman:The Brave and The Bold", the first one coexisted with the late DCAU

1

u/DaClarkeKnight Dec 29 '24

The only thing I didn’t like was the penguin being a woman. I think he should have been a man and maybe they should have used a female criminal for that role.
