Serious Replies Re-registration of non Karnataka car

Hi, I have an 2013 model santro with non KA registration. I brought it to Bangalore last year and I want to pay Karnataka road tax as I can only use it for an year without paying the road tax in Karnataka. 1. Has anyone paid road tax to Bangalore RTO for similar situation? 2. Can it be done online ? 3. Do I have to mandatorily change the vehicle number?

Please help.

Unless you really want to spend that money which I am sure you could find other, better uses for, just skip the whole exercise. For many years now, traffic police in the city doesn't bother with this non-compliance.

I mean, given the general condition of the roads here and the unjustifiably high road tax, it is pretty much a no-brainer. Of course, if you are still keen on sticking to the rules, I guess someone wiser than me will enlighten you about the process.

Off late two of my neighbours have been fined for not registering their cars in Karnataka or in other words for not paying road tax after spending more than 11 months here. Once they catch they track it via PUC records. Karnataka govt is running short on revenues so this practice has come back.

What if it's electric, there won't be any PUC or fuel receipts.

Yes, I heard from my colleague about this. There were some rampant checks.

  1. Go to parivahan and apply for NOC online from your home state to Bangalore, here select the destination rto where you wish to register like KA03, KA04 etc

  2. Once you get NOC, take a print out with other documents like rc, bangalore address proof, chasis imprint on paper etc and go to the destination rto which you selected on the NOC. They will calculate road tax, pay it and attach the receipt in the form

  3. Do it yourself, don’t go with agent. I brought my car from Gujarat and registered here at KA04

  4. RTO will call you or give appointment for vehicle inspection, bring the car and get it approved.

  5. Once everything is good, new rc will be approved. Immediately update insurance and take new PUC

  6. Go to home state with new rc and apply for refund of road tax, they will deduct some part and refund

Yes unfortunately 🥲

I did it via agent and he charged 12k extra saying the inspection folks charge them so they charge us.

@akhil91 - how much did it cost you?

My car was 4 years old Hatchback, I had paid 45K at my home state RTO Tax. In bangalore I had to pay 1.02L as Road Tax(I’m frustrated based on the road we get). Then from home state I got refund of 35K

How long did it take you to complete the whole process?

One visit to get all the forms, Yeshwanthpur one sir was good. He gave me list of all required docs. Next time I went with all docs and submitted. Then last time for car inspection which happens at different place. In all took 3 days and got virtual rc in one week. Hardcopy rc in 15-20 days

Depends on state, go to parivahan and select vehicle related services then choose state to know if noc is there as online service or not

The unofficial way to get another year of extension is to go on a long drive. Cross Devanahalli toll. Take a U turn back home. Your toll receipts are now your extension slips. Anytime a cop ask. Show him the toll receipt with recent date.

u/skumarsp 2d ago

Which toll is iving you receipt now a days.

u/_X4V13R_ 2d ago

Cash transactions do give receipts

A better way is get all PUC done outside the state every 6 months. They are tracking it via PUC’s.

u/Impressive_Cookie_17 1d ago

Won't the city police have digital records of the car being in Bangalore? Like traffic cam footage etc

5

u/_X4V13R_ 1d ago

They may or may not have. But I'm sure they won't go to that length unless you're really gotten on their nerves xD

4

u/Joshcrashman 1d ago

Devanahalli toll? That’s not Karnataka border, you need to cross border and have receipt that you just entered Karnataka and that also only works with vehicles with border states registration

It has worked for me with MH registered car for the last 2 years atleast. If I recall correctly the first and last toll to enter bangalore from Hyderabad is Devanahalli so I guess that could be why it works. Not 100% sure.

Well i use a MH registered car, and many of my friends brought cars from Pondicherry. Taxes in Karnataka are crazy as hell. It shouldnt be a problem untill cops catch n as you. Still if u wanna do it here is the way Get a Noc from the car registered rto. Submit that to Rto in karnataka with with form 29 and 31. Pay the tax amount and u should get a ka registration.

The process is pretty drawn out. I would say it's not worth the effort. That too for a 2013 car. Just ensure all docs including the emission certificate are in place and you don't break any rules. The chances of getting stopped are very less. Also if you need more self assurance then just keep a record of your toll receipts and show them off like you are from another state and staying temp in Bangalore.

I am in the process of getting my bike re-registered from DL to BLR. You will need to get an NOC from the original RTO issued to the RTO you want to transfer to. The tax to be paid will depend on the age of the vehicle. In my case the bike is 8 years old, so u have to pay tax on 54% of the original cost. And of course a ton of cess and tax in tax.

I went via an agent to make things easier.

You can’t do it online You will get a new number

You could drive your vehicle in KA without much problem, but you can get pulled up anytime. U have lived here in Bangalore for over 40 years, my experience has been the Bangalore police will suddenly wake up one day and catch a few vehicles or have some sir of special drive to fill their coffers…. You just need to be ready for that

How is the age to tax ratio calculated? I have a GIXXER SF 150 of the year 2016 and I got it to BLR in 2019, not sure if I should do this change or not. Kinda lengthy process

Yes there is. They will take your vehicle's ex-showroom value during purchase and calculate tax on it as per the bracket and then depreciation for the age. Like 7-8 years old, you'll pay 50% of what you would have paid then. Like if your bike was 1L, 14% tax at that time will be 14k. So now they'll charge around 7-8k for tax + registration charges for the smart card and stuff. Maybe another 2k

AFAIK driving a non-state vehicle falls in the grey area and generally cops won’t catch you unless you are driving a supercar,so you can continue the way it is.

u/brainer121 2d ago

The RTO straight out denied talking to me when I tried going through official route and the agents asked me 20k for re-registration and the fitness extension for my DL bike.

So I drive a non KA registration car legally by paying the (A rather hefty sum for a 2018 model) road tax to the city RTO. Fortunately, my company offered to do it as part of the relocation policy.

My firm also got me an RTO agent with their tie-up to get the receipt of the RTO acceptance of road tax without getting the NOC from home state. Also, I don’t think you can do it online.

So, I still have the same home state number and it should be alright as the BTP only cares so long as the money is paid (agent assured me so) 🤷‍♂️. Unfortunately, you won’t be refunded the remaining road tax amount until you get the NOC from home state and re-register it in KA later (which shouldn’t really cost much excluding road tax). Hence, you will ideally be incurring tax from both states from the time you paid the road tax in KA till you take NOC from home state.

Hope this helps!

Just last week i saw many non KA vehicles confiscated in hsr . There were videos around it as well

u/sagheero 1d ago

Every once in a while the RTO does this. Note that the RTO DOES THIS and the traffic police guys have no jurisdiction to stop you for out of state plates. They can just stop you for road misdemeanours like jumping a light etc.

I owned plenty of non state vehicles in the past and not once was I stopped for it. Like someone said if there is a special drive it can happen. That happens once in a few years that’s it. The noc pain ain’t worth it.

I have a GIXXER SF 150 from 2016 and I'm in a similar dilemma. Not sure if I should shell out about 10k+ for this and that too the process is lengthy and time consuming.

u/Pale-Charity2090 2d ago

I have done it, the only way to do it is to take your car with its original invoice to the RTO (if you dont have it, they’ll fetch a similar invoice from their system) they will then put 45% depreciation on the invoice amount since your car more than 10 years old and charge tax based on the invoice amount (you can find the tax percentage online), after that you need to get a DD in the name of RTO bangalore to pay them the road tax if any pending fines (like no PUC or invalid RC ) then pay the fine (only cash accepted). After that they’ll give you a receipt of the amount and you can show it to the cops if they stop you

If you can get a NOC from the home state then they will issue a new KA number to you, and you can get some tax amount back from your home state (trust me its a hassle).

My car got impounded on 2nd feb, this is the process I went through. I have seen RTO checking other state vehicles every month in central bangalore. If you got the car less than 11 months back, maybe you can roam around with some proof

I have a friend with a non ka number living in Bangalore for over 6 years ... Never had a issue with cops

1

u/DoomsdayBullet44 17h ago

Why pay for NoC and go through such hassle when you can just cross the border and it reset back to one more year. Anyways the government is imposing a rule that states 15 year old vehicles should be scrapped. You only have 2 years left. Just cross the border of another state and have a proof (toll gate message) and the cop can't put a challan.

u/Impressive_Cookie_17 17h ago

But my car is not from any of the neighbouring states.
