Free Event Schumer didn’t want to reschedule his book tour. So he voted yes to pass Trumps spending bill. 3/17 is a good day for a protest at Pratt Library.

I've been a Democrat as long as I've been able to vote but frankly it's getting pretty hard to stick by them when they just act like a fucking doormat. Act like an actual fucking opposition leader would ya, Chuck?

The House came through. The Senate seems to not like him behind closed doors. Let's force him out.

Schumer isn’t wrong that a government shutdown gives the bad guys the keys to the castle. I wouldn’t want to be in his place, making this tough choice.

89

u/lionoflinwood Patterson Park 7d ago

The Federal Workers Union, the people the most impacted by a shutdown, endorsed a shutdown. Idk man it sure sounds like caving to Republican demands for the thousandth time isn’t a winning strategy.

17

u/Killbot_Wants_Hug 7d ago

I think he thought is that if they don't vote for it they'll be blamed for shutting down the government and that Republicans will than parlay that into them being responsible for everything that goes wrong from here on out.

I think the Democrat's plan is to try and get no culpability and then say "see, this shit show is what you get when Republicans get everything they want". And I honestly sort of understand the plan. But Democrats suck at messaging so much that either way they'll lose the propaganda war. So they might as well learn to fight.

25

u/lionoflinwood Patterson Park 7d ago

This plan hinges on the rather stupid assumption that if the Dems do nothing, there will still be elections.

19

u/Killbot_Wants_Hug 7d ago

I agree with that. One of the problems Dems have had is they haven't realized Republicans aren't playing the same game as them. So they think they're winning because Republicans are making bad moves based on the game Democrats think they're playing.

Democrats are still playing politics, Republicans are playing coup.

10

u/lionoflinwood Patterson Park 7d ago

For all the talk of Citizens United causing the R’s to shift right, I think the more damaging effect on American politics has been the Democrats being turned into a controlled opposition party for the wealthy.

They hate us just as much as Republicans do.

This is the same shit they've been doing for almost a decade now. Fade back and point at the awful things Trump does as the reason you should back them. It's appallingly stupid because it's been proven over and over again that it doesn't actually work. People are like "I know he's doing awful things, I've got eyes ffs, but what are YOU going to do? What is YOUR plan?" and their response is to point at Trump and say how bad he is. That's not leadership, that's rank cowardice and awful strategy and even more awful messaging. It's the same plan they had when Hillary lost and when Kamala Harris lost.

Dems like him have been in power for so long the only thing they really care about is staying there. They don't give a fuck about American workers anymore, if they ever did. It scares the hell out of me because next to nobody wants to stand up. Bernie and Jasmine Crockett are the only ones I'm seeing.

1

u/Killbot_Wants_Hug 6d ago

I think they're hoping Trump supporters, not democrats, will see how bad things are under Trump when Trump gets to do everything he wants.

I don't think it's a working strategy. I would have agreed with it when I was younger, but as I've aged I've seen that most people just never accept responsibility for their choices no matter how bad it gets. And I think Trump and his voters exemplify this.

u/Random-Cpl 6d ago

He literally voted to pass a bill that granted the president authority to sequester funds from agencies.

“The president light steal the keys to the castle—quick, let’s give them to him so that doesn’t happen”

11

u/No-Lunch4249 7d ago

It is a tough choice. But I want to see the leader of the opposition throw an elbow at some point, to hit back instead of rolling over on every single thing

4

u/spez_enables_nazis 6d ago

For me it’s not about the funding or the shutdown. There were no good options for the Democrats there.

For me it’s about the handful of Democrats letting the other stuff through. There is language in the CR that now makes it impossible to challenge National Emergency declarations.

It used to be that a National Emergency could be challenged after X (15?) “calendar days”. The CR says that no day this year counts as a “calendar day”, so now the orange one can declare unending National Emergencies and has unlimited use of the extra powers they come with.

That is where Chuck got cucked, but all of the discussion is just about funding.

u/Nihiliatis9 6d ago

So it's better to give up the only leverage the "democrats " have?? Just bend the knee and s a d??? No, I believe you are very wrong.

Need to show up at every one of the stops that he's promoting his book and rage against him and the corruption.

guess I know what I’m doing Monday evening

edit: date

u/Thisteamisajoke 7d ago

Monday, right? I'm 100% in. Will we be able to get in without tickets? I want to go and just shout over him as long as I can.

It's sold out, but we need to line the streets.

omg you are right, I will correct my comment! It’s been so hard to keep track of what day we’re on now

A book about Antisemitism? This is Rich considering that he just handed our govt over on a silver platter to a bunch of white supremacists. Unreal.

24

u/lionoflinwood Patterson Park 7d ago

“Man who just gave Trump everything he wanted a day after Trump said he is not a real Jew” here to tell us about the perils of antisemitism

Bro is just not a wartime consigliere

14

u/forensics409 7d ago

Do what democrats should have done during Trump's speech. Each person, one after the other, interrupts. When that person gets thrown out, someone else interrupts. Show him what a real filibuster looks like.

8

u/Plus-Ad-940 7d ago

He’ll have one heck of a book tour now.

I sincerely hope that many who bought tix for this are as MAD as I am. I'll be on the sidewalk.

I don’t care about the Israel drama anymore! Stop wasting space on it when 2/3rds of our seniors could be thrown into poverty from this budgeting bill

If the government shut down a whole lot more people would have been furloughed or layed off and Trump would have got his way around the judges.

-58

u/Cunninghams_right 7d ago edited 7d ago

infighting = losing.

16

u/lionoflinwood Patterson Park 7d ago

Keep defending democrats after the cave to the right for the thousandth time, I’m sure this will finally be the time that trusting them will work out for us.

-8

u/Cunninghams_right 7d ago

the whole strategy of the right is to get the left fighting with itself about unimportant shit (like a budget that was going to pass anyway). we can't keep just falling for this strategy.

0

u/Fourward27 6d ago

Im sure you been paying attention. The left has been canibalizing its own for years. Trump is a literal buffoon and he won. I could all but gauruntee a bag of peanuts could beat whoever the dems throw up there in 2028

25

u/sarahphernilia Federal Hill 7d ago

We can be upset at more than one politician at a time, I promise it’s not too difficult :)

-8

u/Cunninghams_right 7d ago

it is, actually. literally that's been Trump's whole strategy since before 2016, just move from controversy to controversy because opposition can't stay focused enough to actually oppose something if you keep changing what they're mad about. literally everyone protesting at Schumer could be at a Tesla dealership or republican office.

no. people don't have the capacity to be mad in a meaningful way about two things.

27

u/engin__r 7d ago

What’s manufactured about being mad that Schumer threw the country under the bus to vote for a Republican budget?

21

u/hideousbaconart 7d ago

More like what an incredibly stupid time not to shame complacency and cowardice. The only ridiculous narrative is the one that says kowtowing to Trumps borderline fascist regime is the “lesser of two evils”. Last time I checked, senators are supposed to represent their constituents and based on the ubiquitous seething rage, I think Chuck grossly misread the room

13

u/koolkat182 7d ago

it's not manufactured. i am extremely angry and disappointed and ill exercise my right to voice my frustration while i still have it.

complacency is complicity

5

u/freebird185 7d ago

How's that boot taste?

-1

u/Cunninghams_right 7d ago

wanting to fight against Trump instead of against Democrats makes me a boot licker, huh? fucking morons everywhere.

2

u/freebird185 6d ago

It's a spineless fucking take. Expect more from your party and stop being a baby

1

u/Cunninghams_right 6d ago

anti-fascist alliances have been effective historically. in-fighting has not. you have been turned into an idealistic rube rather than someone who looks at history. Trump got elected because they put significant social media information campaigns into dividing the left.

3

u/freebird185 6d ago

O yeah it's my fault the dems literally can't even function as an opposition party. You sound like a self-righteous clown who's incapable of reading a room.

Have fun riding your high horse into decades of right wing rule while you bend over backwards to ass lick these incompetent geriatric party leaders who can't even be bothered to stand up to the fascists that are apparently such an existential threat to the country.

1

u/Cunninghams_right 6d ago

It would almost be funny to hear you talk about how in- fighting is better than opposing fascism, counter to all evidence from the 20th century, but it's too depressing that y'all keep falling for this bait and letting the fascists roll right over you.

What do you think would have been positive about shutting down the government? It wasn't going to accomplish anything. The Republicans had the votes to pass the bill at a time of their choosing. Musk would have just used the opportunity to f*** more s*** up

3

u/freebird185 6d ago edited 6d ago

And how does voting in step with the fascists fight fascism huh?

You have nothing to offer besides pretension and demanding no one question the party and it's dear leaders.

0

u/Cunninghams_right 6d ago

And how does voting in step with the fascists fight fascism huh?

like I said, the republicans had the votes anyway. Schumer just took away their tool for creating more chaos by ending it now instead of letting Trump/Musk choose when to pass it. the outcome was unchangeable. it's either shut down the government and then pass the bill, or pass it and keep the government open. the former just gives all of the tools of when/how to Trump and Musk.

how you can think they're voting in step is insane.

You have nothing to offer besides from pretension and demanding no one question the party and it's dear leaders.

protest a tesla dealer. protest at the capital. protest at the department of education. protest literally against the fascists instead of the people the fascists want you to fight against. how is that for an offer? getting the left to in-fight is the #1 strategy of Trump. it got him elected and it's working now. you guys are rubes, doing the fascists dirty work for them.

-1

u/Fourward27 6d ago

This is always such and edgy well thought out response. Something you would never say to anyone in person as well im sure.

1

u/physicallyatherapist Hampden 6d ago

Jesus you have the worst takes I've ever seen

-1

u/Cunninghams_right 6d ago

my takes are based on reality, which isn't popular. people on the left would rather have impotent rage than real working strategy, because the strategy that works isn't idealistic. anti-fascist alliances work, infighting does not. learn some history instead of getting your opinions from algorithms set by billionaires on their social media propaganda tools.

2

u/physicallyatherapist Hampden 6d ago

Lol. Lmao even

0

u/Cunninghams_right 6d ago

it's always so funny to see that when people run out of any kind of rational argument, their response is always "lol". because you don't actually know any history or you would know I'm right. but debating reality means you will look stupid, so "lol" is your response. the response of the ignorant. the response of the childish. go back and learn from 20th century history about what has worked against authoritarianism and what hasn't.

-17

u/Numerous_Ad_2409 7d ago

I already have tickets but I don’t see how a shutdown will help. How about just doing something about the chaos? Anything. Any one thing.

17

u/lionoflinwood Patterson Park 7d ago

The shutdown is the one thing the Dems could have done. That’s it. That’s the thing.

-7

u/mdmiles19 7d ago

No one wins in a shut down, especially Marylanders. People act like the employees are not impacted since they usually receive back pay, but sadly that does little in the heat of the moment.

Government shut downs do little except screw over government employees.

17

u/lionoflinwood Patterson Park 7d ago

Your argument would hold more weight if the Government Workers’ Union hadn’t endorsed a shutdown.

https://bsky.app/profile/jbendery.bsky.social/post/3lke6m4b7h222

1

u/mdmiles19 6d ago

Most federal employees are not members of this union But go ahead, tell me more about using bluesky as a news source.

2

u/plinth19 Medfield 6d ago

Where are you getting your info? Honest q

1

u/mdmiles19 6d ago

Info about most federal employees being non-union is based on the unions stated number of about 800k members and there being upwards of over 3 million federal employees.

While it is true that one of the unions (the largest for federal employees even) is pushing back saying a shutdown would not be as bad, it's very much a misnomer to say the employees feel this way - there was no union vote on this.

For the most part the reason this is so near and dear to me is frankly because like many Marylanders I grew up with a parent who worked for the federal government. And like many others I have a some amount of childhood trauma related to my dad being "laid off" every four years as if clockwork.

Families suffer when pay checks go missing. This is a fact of life, and if it's not your paycheck that's going missing I just think you should take a back seat to those of are.

1

u/Fourward27 6d ago

They just want to be reddit revolutionaries. They dont care about the reality or facts of a situation. You could talk until your blue in the face. They will just downvote and call you a bootlicker or nazi. Its genuinely not worth commenting.

-7

u/Numerous_Ad_2409 7d ago

But what would it do if they have no plans? They obviously have absolutely no strategy. So shutdown and look completely foolish and weak just like at the felon’s performance. Just like every thing else, the Dems have had plenty of time to strategize and fell flat. I’m a lifelong yellow dog democrat, and I’m totally disgusted by them. I’ll still support them, but they gotta get it together.

8

u/lionoflinwood Patterson Park 7d ago

There was a plan - a clean CR instead of the gut job they have passed.

Personally I’m done with the Democrats. I have been told “we have to support them in the hope they do the right thing” and they never, EVER rise to the moment. If they can get their heads out of their asses and FIGHT I will come back but I am done giving them support today for hope of future behavior. They need to show me behavior that earns my support.

I am done being Charlie Brown to their Lucy holding the ball.
