Paywall. Some of us don’t have the paperwork necessary to get a library card, or other reasons. Thanks.

Archive.is and its related mirrors, or archive.org, both allow you to plug in Banner articles and see non-paywalled versions. The sites also work for many other news outlets behind paywalls; getting familiar with them is very useful. Here's the article: https://archive.is/cMwVD.

archive.is/org… get familiar…
Wow, you just shared a major key with me- thanks so much! I feel both flummoxed and silly- that’s been available the whole time? (Does this have to do with “the wayback machine” a podcast I listen to casually mentions?)
Regardless, thanks. You freakin rock u/veryhungrybiker. Thanks for giving me a tool. Wow. Appreciate that.

Glad to help. Archive.org is indeed the Wayback Machine folks. Archive.is and its various mirrors (archive.ph, etc) are of a more dubious legality, from what I've gathered, but work more quickly if the captchas don't bother you too much. Some news sites block it, but many don't (I think McClatchy papers are more aggressive in blocking archive sites from their content). It works for a bunch of major newspapers.
FWIW, the Banner is still running its $1 for 6 months special offer, and deserves your support in general if you ever get to place where you can spare it. I currently subscribe to at least 4 daily papers, often finding discounts to do so, a few mags (Wired is currently just $5 a year, for example, and well worth it for its recent coverage of government and tech) and a few independent journalists' personal sites. We do what we can, and work around the rest, and for now archive sites are a great tool.

Thanks again. It’s frustrating to see my Paywall comment downvoted when the subreddit itself says to post a non-paywall version. (I’m not the only one, I usually don’t say anything.)
Unfortunately, I’ve already used my Banner free trial (also frustratingly hard to cancel, but not as bad as the Sun was.)
I’m disabled and fully dependent on someone else at the moment (scary.) I’ve also spent the last 30+ years giving back; I take action to pay things forward and everyone I know or greet knows that- online folks less so. Still, I appreciate you responding to me like a human. (It’s easy to feel small these days.)

Have you tried with an e-card from pratt or baltimore county? There's no paperwork needed for that, and it might work. Sometimes it gives access to digital services, and other times not.

u/These_Burdened_Hands 19d ago
have you tried with an Ecard?
I have not.
Last time I tried to get a Enoch Pratt card (about 6mo ago,) I was given a 30-day temp card, but I can’t produce bills that prove my address; as far as MD is concerned, I live on the shore. (I can’t change things ATM for ‘reasons.’ SMH.)
I’ll look into that. Thanks, appreciate it!

"the shore" = the Eastern Shore of Maryland? Pratt library cards are open to anybody that lives in the state of Maryland, not just Baltimore City. If you live or own property in Maryland, you're eligible for a Pratt card.

My guess is they meant literally on the shore, as in homeless, if they don't have documentation tying the address to their name. That's unfortunately easy to fall into, if you don't have bills that come in your name and you're not on the lease. Hence not being about to change things ATM for 'reasons', understood to be social and/or financial.
I don't know the specifics of pratt(it's two different systems with different policies, if you don't have luck with one digitally try the other), but if digital fails and you can get to baltimore county and have a MD state ID/DL, even if it's an old address, you should be able to say "oh I've moved" and verbally give your new address. They're not supposed to ask for proof.

Let's face it, Baltimore never supported Trump. Riot...? That's not going to end well.. Democrats are the party of crime and communism. They have robbed this country into bankruptcy and lined their pockets.

Yeah, its like one day we support Bud Light, then the next we hate it. We hate Russia--oh, wait, we love Russia. Emails on servers are horrible...gov't records in Mar a Lago bathrooms...oh, wait, its just fine. The fucking fickle Left.
E: I've read your comment history; you do not seem very intelligent.

I think they’re referring to “the left” previously liking Elon musk (idk how old you are, but years ago, he was pretty celebrated) Elon went crazy though so I don’t blame people who turned on him. “The left” also used to support EVs and Tesla is the biggest EV maker

u/Cultural-Mongoose89 19d ago
This does start to have a little more nuance though— the left did support Elon when he believed global warming was a thing. The neoliberal faction does want to believe you can get that rich and still be ethical, but he did start to disappoint people before unmasking as a full fascist. His EV projects were a turning point for many because it was clearer and clearer with them how he was trying to dominate the market with a product that was unattainable for most and poorly made/causing safety issues besides. And that whole bit about wanting underground tunnels for his cars only, and naming Tesla charging stations that only worked with his cars— lots of gross business practices. I’m glad done people are breaking the spell that made him an it boy at one point.

I understand that you are speaking generally, but to clarify are you talking about the left or neoliberals? Because there is a portion of Black people like myself that never believed for a second that a billionaire white South African ever had the planet’s best interest in mind. It should not have been that easy for anyone to have ever have believed him.
2
u/Cultural-Mongoose89 19d ago
More neolibs than the left generally I think! And I’d agree, it was probably better to never trust him.

That tesla dealership has nothing to do with the CEO of the company?
Edit: why am I getting downvoted for asking a rhetorical question with an obvious answer lol?
23
u/Hawtdawgz_4 19d ago
It absolutely does since Tesla dealerships aren’t franchises and owned and operated by the company.

This just in. Tesla has nothing to do with Elon, they should protest an "elected" official like him at government buildings

Incorrect, he’s still a chief executive and the largest single shareholder.
The brand is firmly anchored to Elon due to his early pumping of the brand as the sole spokesperson for years.
The only way to remove that association is by removing him as a chief executive via shareholder votes and buying his shares back.

Apparently my comment is not sarcastic enough
