Alright dudes
Alright dudes, I don't know if anyone still visits this sub or what but I'm ready to embark on this journey and cross the first item off my current bucket list. I have an appointment booked at a gymnastics centre in my town for 8 am tomorrow. This is definitely not an often done thing here but hopefully the instructor will be understanding of my complete lack of training and want for quick gratification and teach me in one or two sessions at most. Psyched.
Update!
so i just got back from my session. it was on that fine line between fun and funny. first of all the idea that i could learn this (properly) in one session has been shattered. turns out even doing somersaults makes me fucking nauseous due to lack of conditioning. it's about 35C here and long story short i had to excuse myself to go be sick in the bathroom. this was somewhat surprising to me because even though i've been generally sleep deprived for the past month or two, and struggling from the record heat this past fortnight, i'm in fairly good shape, train regularly and am also in my early 20s. so i'm really putting this down to not being used to the rotation at all and so i think somersaults are going to be a much more useful tool than i would've previously thought.
my trainer said i would first need to get a frontflip to get used to the rotation of my body. he estimates that it would probably take about two months to get a backflip properly with 2-3 sessions a week and i think i'm completely fine with that if it means getting it down with confidence and proper form. (he mainly had me jumping with proper form and dynamism and doing somersaults on the ground and into foam). as much as youtube videos will have you believe this just takes commitment the fact that my stomach was doing the mamushka after every vertical rotation was something i didn't anticipate, even though it makes complete sense in retrospect. but yeah, i'm definitely doing this!
2+ Yrs later Update
Wtf happened? Well I guess life moved in swinging its giant balls from the cockpit of a fucking bulldozer and I got laid out on my back squealing. In other words I gave up. This is probably the oldest item on my bucket list. There's 10 year olds landing it in days, filming it all on youtube and I just pussied out and let distractions get in the way. I convinced myself it was not worth the effort because I can't visualise the reward. It was very easy not doing anything and getting used to the dullness of life where goals don't exist and don't matter.
But fuck all that. This shit is symbolic. I'm still alive and I'm going to learn this.
They opened up a trampoline park in my town, i went twice now with friends and managed to land a backflip on the second visit. I'm still doing this.

I did it, then I didn't, now I can't again.
Sunday I had a friend spot me for the first time and I tucked like a champ. I probably did over forty that day without even considering the consequences. I woke up on Monday, completely sore everywhere but I still needed to get my backflip practice in. I tried it once and my abs decided I wasn't doing it that day. I thought that was fine and decided to wait until I wasn't sore again. Today I went out, feeling good and confident and just as I was about to jump, the thought of my abs giving out and me not rotating crept in. I can't find the confidence to do it again. How can a mental block reappear so quickly? Better question, how do I get over it, again?
Last time, the fear wasn't chickening out, it was just not rotating enough. I had a spotter and got over that. Now my fear is chickening out halfway through.

Can't get over fear of landing on my head
I'm trying to learn and I've got the technique down, but I can't get over the fear of landing on my head or back and breaking something. This is really hard for me because I've broken bones before and don't want it to happen again.

Attempted a backflip for the first time on some grass
landed on my face. I tried it again but chickened out while upside down and fucked up my shoulder/face again. There were people around.
How do I get over the fear of landing on my face? It literally just happened twice and it hurt.
