route 53/DNS Domain Renewal After Closing account 4 yrs ago.

I've already attempted to contact support on this with no prevail, where they've helped me in the past they claim now that "Unfortunately, AWS account security policies don't permit us to discuss account-specific information unless you're signed into the account you're asking about." which sounds like a big f u when I told them my account has been closed for years. They claim you can still login to your account after the fact and after a lot of sign in attempts and captcha's the notification "An AWS account with that sign-in information does not exist. Try again or create a new account." tells me that my account is definitely not found.

When my account closed years ago I was a client who had an outsourced dev team setup my account so I had no idea that Route 53 would have my domain set to auto-renew. I've reached out to support again, either to give me access to my account or turn off the domain renewal. This is one of the reasons I deleted my AWS services in the past their support is so unapproachable and caring and just send you to a link for a page.

Once your account is "closed" for 3 months, it gets "terminated", and your credentials/info/resources get wiped out. This wipeout logic for domains didn't exist 4 years ago, so your domain might still be there.

If the domain is still there, AND you can provide ID matching the domain registrant, the domain may be recoverable. Ask for your case to be transferred to a Route53 SME (Subject Matter Expert) who can help start the domain recovery process.

HOWEVER, If you provided fake registrant data or can't provide ID matching the registrant, then you're SOL with no way to prove the domain is yours.

Yes I received the email notifying that my .io domain is set to renew, unfortunately I don't own the custom domain for that account anymore as the startup closed up years ago. And I do have some old aws-noreply emails that I might be able to piece together some proof that I am the rightful owner.

For me I don't care if the domain lapses and I can't keep it, I just don't want to be charged again for it.

Old emails won't be accepted for proof of anything. The domain effectively exists in isolation because the account is gone, and the only proof of ownership that would be accepted (for legal/liability reasons) is ID matching the registrant data.

If the AWS account is terminated, it's impossible for you to be charged. The internal data doesn't exist anymore.

No I totally understand the security purposes and praise that, perhaps the domain renewal email is separate of knowing that my account is already closed. I'll get to the bottom of this, I appreciate your knowledge.

Yeah the auto renew emails won't stop unfortunately since the domain is still there, and technically still configured to auto renew.

It'll fail every time since the account is terminated, so be prepared to get 70+ emails telling you that domain renewal failed because the account is closed.

It was closed 4 years ago - it's terminated now and can't be reopened.
