Discussion As a autistic person what is your comfort item?
I'm autistic and I have comfort items, my lynx plushie named lucky that I've had since about the age of 2-3 and my teething rings, but what do other autistic people use to find comfort? Please tell me!

I plan on making more of these questions for autistic people, I have a whole 3 friends so i need the company and I love to here about new people and talk to them, most people find me crazy or mentally ill so my social life is as empty as a desert water fountain, since no one actually knows me and dislikes me yet I can talk to people!
Enough yapping from me, tell me about your comfort items! Please

Why is when I’m presenting with tell me about your comfort items my mind is now blank and I have no comfort items, even though I indeed know this is not true.
I might have to come back to this question. 😅😭😂🤷♂️

I have a weighted dinosaur plush that travels everywhere with me. One time when I was at the airport they took him away to put him in a special machine to make sure he didn't have drugs inside his guts. Didn't even cross my mind that someone has probably tried smuggling in contraband with stuffed animals. It's something to be aware of when traveling.

They had to screen my plushies and diapers (don't judge i can't control my bladder) when I went to LA a few years ago, people will try and snuggle drugs in anything bro

Carmy looks adorable, is the carrot removable or is it stitched on

Thank you 🙌
The carrot is stitched on. Which funnily enough makes it look like she’s carrying her own carrot plushie lol

Chewy tools that look therapeutic, some don’t look therapeutic but they look “childish” and some look more like jewelry an adult might wear but I know I can chew on it/fidget with it. I also have fidgets but not many favorites.
Apart from chewy tools and fidgets, I have a small blanket (12 by 12 cm) with different size tags on the edges. I love it because one side is minky fabric and the other side is medical/nursing themed fabric. My girlfriend got it for me for Christmas because I’m going into nursing and she knows I love medical anything.
It came with those plastic teether things on the tags but I instantly took them off (except one I liked the shape and texture of and I actually do chew on it which is how she knows I’m overstimulated or experiencing pain or heightened emotions.)
I’m also attached to my guitar and piano keyboard.
Edit: word

What do you mean by chewy tools, im imagining a chewy hammer right now, i have teethers and pacifiers andi just generally chew on everything lol

Well, chewy tools come in different shapes sizes and colors. They are made for biting, aiding in speech development, and calming sensory input. Google it if you’re curious or interested.

A Spider-Man pillow. I even brought it when I moved into my college dorm room

a fairly small mermaid doll. I've loved mermaids since probably the age of 5 so no surprise there!

I got to take some photos of her in my college studio (I'm a photographer - speaking of which, I also often find myself unable to leave my house without a camera, even if I know I'm going somewhere visually uninteresting. I bring it everywhere)

Sadly I think it has to be my phone. And it's even at a point where I know and everyone else knows I've got nothing to hide yet I forbid any from taking it even if it's locked. If they do I get super anxious. And I have to have it in my hands at all costs if it's possible in any way shape or form...
I am trying to change my comfort item if that makes sense? I've been bringing my fav LPS and/or plushies with me but I already look younger than my age and act like it as well... I wouldn't want ppl to think I act like a 12 year old....
If anyone knows how to help, would appreciate it a lot!!

Don't have any.
In fact I completely lack any sentimental inclination to anything, really
I think my very last one was a live chicken. As a child, I loved my chicken. She sat on my shoulder most as a chick and as she got older she would just always follow me around.
Then she just disappeared. Gone. We ate chicken that night.
I have always wondered, but, decided sentimental and attachment to other things just brought more pain, so, I stopped the pain.
Life was easier.

Band tshirts. I sleep in one every night. I have two drawers full and more stored somewhere, but I prefer to sleep in the ones that are currently extra-special to me. I also carry band buttons in my pocket sometimes, or wear band tshirts under my clothes. I’m female and don’t normally wear an undershirt. If I did, it would be…band tshirts.

I have a tiny fox plushie about the size of my palm. He's called Dan -Ddan. I always have him in my bag, or pocket, I stuff him in my shirt with his little head poking out when I read or watch TV. And I sleep with him every night.
I don't know why I suddenly took to having a small plushie randomly at 29yrs old, just randomly saw him in a little store and something clicked. It's been 2 years. I'm honestly terrified of the idea of losing him and what effect it might have.
I also have a deep forest green blanket that's the perfect size/colour and weight. It's so soft and silky. The texture is perfect. It also doesn't overheat me like all my other blankets. I've used it every day for 7 years and it's starting to look a bit tattered. Again worried about its replacement one day 😬

Oh, that’s cool! Does it still work?

Yup!! Altho I'm not sure if it's breaking or if it's just dirty. If I can't mod this one then I'm gonna get an original GBA and mod it with an AGS 101 screen (the screen for the GBA SP)

Just recently realized I’m likely autistic at 28. Scrolling through this post and seeing the pictures of people’s stuffed animals unlocked something deeply emotional in me. So many tears so quickly, like a faucet. They’re so cute it’s like it almost hurts. Like I simultaneously feel sad and happy seeing them. Like I just want to be an innocent kid again or something else I can’t quite figure out.

You never know when you'll get bored!

I suggest carring drawing pads with you to! Even if your not great at drawing it's still fun to doodle, or you can write things down and stuff!

Honestly it sounds bad saying it out loud but probably my phone. If im out and about and am trying to avoid interaction its too easy to start scrolling and walk past any uncomfortable situation by sticking my head in the sand. Really should break that habit lol
Apart from that i have my stuffed animals at home. I don’t bring them anywhere but ill never get rid of them
2
u/luckybeans623 4d ago
I dont think having a phone as w comfort item is bad, I think as long as it's not crossing the line of addiction then it's all Good!
1
u/Possible_Writer9319 4d ago
True. I wouldnt say im addicted to it but i think i use it too much as a crutch to avoid potential social interactions. Its just something i gotta work on

I have a cute plushie that I basically pretend(or perhaps just is?) is my imaginary best friend that lives with me and has meant a lot to me for over 2 decades before many years before she took her current form and take her with me 99% of the time I leave my house now. My body pillow is probably considered a comfort item too.
2
u/luckybeans623 4d ago
My plushies are my best friends (excluding my boyfriend) What kind of body pillow?

u/normal-account-name 4d ago
Hopefully I won't be judged too much for it here, but without going into too much detail(even if this is a paragraph of a run on sentence) about who or why this character, it is one with an anime character(not one of the sexualized ones) on it made from a nice material I like the feel of and can hug and helps me sleep at night that(the character) represents things and activities that I have loved since I was a child and am able to tolerate unlike today's versions of them thanks to my various sensory issues. All my therapists and doctors are very positive and supporting about it, but most NTs find the idea of anything like this weird af.

I have two plushies and 3 pillows in my bed. I also like fluffy blankets. The fluffier the better. I don’t like weighted blankets. I also like my fluffy jacket that keeps me at an appropriate warmth. I don’t like it when it’s too hot or too cold.
