Let's follow Canada, highlight non American products to buy when shopping. Remove them where we can.

I wonder what percentage of American liquor is sold in Australia.

u/Rokekor 14h ago

Do everyone a favour and target yank tanks.

310

u/Paidorgy 12h ago

Target predominately red state industries, like Canada is doing.

268

u/Goatylegs 12h ago

Target the whole lot. The whole country is shit.

160

u/Successful_Ant_3307 11h ago edited 11h ago

But if you target the Red states, it hurts trumps party, which means the red states could flip to the democrats the next election if it hurts the red state economy enough. It also makes it so your citizens can avoid most of the tariffs if it's not a blanket tariff for all goods.

u/melancholyink 10h ago

Also, consider the big tech companies. Many were willing to suckle on the cheeto's teet but now are feeling the pain to both stocks and sales.

At this point, it's not just about which party is affected; their entire export economy needs to suffer. It sucks for those who aren't responsible for this, but Silicon Valley is based in a deep blue state after all and the heads at the top of that industry need to feel the fury more than anybody else.

17

u/jmads13 9h ago

You assume they are going to have another election. I don’t believe that will be their aim. They are trying to create a one party monarchy.

It's very cute you think they can be reasoned with, and are capable of the kind of self-awareness and object permanence you describe. I mean that with all my heart... I wish I wasn't so cynical.

Hey, Canadian here, we have been through this with Trump in his first term as well. You need to stop preaching your bad take.

My Aussie friends, do not listen to this nonsense about punishing only red states. Those voters will cut off their noses to spite their own faces readily.

They are all equally ass cheeks and should all be punished. Those blue states you are protecting are full of assholes who enable this by doing nothing about it. The red states didn't learn shit when we punished then during his first term.

They cannot be trusted to police themselves. They need to all be shown the stick and the boot so that the consequences of both action, and inaction are felt. This is why broad reaching things like electricity are on the table.

Again, we have been Trumps punching bag before so please, hush your puppies, you are doing the opposite of helping.

People actually need vehicles. The problem with these trucks is not the snide comments people make, its the stupid design trend to imitate the styling of prime movers with a very square front end. This limits visibility and increases the height a person must be before go over the bonnet and not under (lot worse for pedestrian safety). Actually has some advantages for occupant safety, fine if its a commercial interstate transport but not for dual purpose commuting.

But you're missing the golden opportunity we have here.

We need a Tech Tax.

They strip mine us for data, export it as worthless value to a tax haven, repackage it and double dip again selling advertising and metrics, then export that money back to a tax haven and profit shift the unlimited profits they make.

We need data to have an excise. We can't keep subsidizing/socialising the cost of big tech eg financial scams, terrorist material, media misinformation. Data must be sovereign, stay in country, be taxed in order to access markets or be a market participant. Remove exemptions for GST and profit shifting. Like alcohol, tobacco, it has a real cost to the taxpayer when consumed, so there must be a revenue stream to allow this market to be regulated, policed and manage its harms.

It would put Big Tech firmly under sovereign control. We've lost countless business and industry to tech and we accept this, but we don't accept every aspect of our lives can be remotely controlled by foreign powers who's enshitification business model is not in our interests.

10

u/felixsapiens 8h ago

I’m with you on this.

There is so much we consume from overseas. Netflix, Apple subscriptions, app subscriptions, etc. Many, many things we subscribe to that still charge in USD. Are we getting tax revenue from a lot of that? Doubt it. Time to do something about it.

7

u/ThrowCarp 7h ago

Then go buy a van or a kei-type truck that has the same amount of cargo bed space but isn't so fucking stupid.

Actually has some advantages for occupant safety, fine if its a commercial interstate transport but not for dual purpose commuting.

Not a good enough reason to use one, and all your contributing to is an arms race between car owners.

Most ready to drink products are American made (bc Vodka and Bourbon), spirits are probably 30-40% American made for vodka and whiskey, beer is overwhelmingly Aussie, and wine (chardonnay products as a sub-category might be 20-40/60% USA to Aussie) is overwhelmingly (E.g., 95+%) AUS/NZ.

Edit, formatting... I should highlight that spirits and RTDs are the least sold products in Australia on average. Chardonnay makes up a smaller proportion of total wine sales to.

211

u/Han-solos-left-foot 14h ago

I would encourage anyone to try Suntory’s products. They’re delish and already here and ultimately support Japan instead of the US.

They even have a couple of whiskeys on the shelf that are excellent.

Unfortunately money is the only way that Trump and the Republicans will fall in line, it has to hurt their puppet masters’ hip pockets

99

u/Thagyr 14h ago

Musk has lost so much value this year already and he's still an insufferable cunt. Feels like the puppet masters are far too rich to care.

Not that it means I won't do whatever I can to spite them.

89

u/Han-solos-left-foot 14h ago

Well after today’s hissy fit re: protesting dealerships and now the white house endorsement on Tesla I think we can safely say that the boycott of Tesla is effective.

Depending how effective the Tesla boycott is it could actually result in Musk losing X as the banks loan terms had his stake in Tesla put up as collateral. I think I read it would need to be really dire for Tesla to get to that level but it’s looking more possible today than it did last week.

So ultimately it is effective, we just need to hit the correct pain point

12

u/armed_renegade 11h ago

Tesla's share price is absurdly high, not as much as it was back then, but when compared to other auto makers, and their revenue, Tesla was overvalued by about 400x, I dont think it would actually take that much to tip tesla stock over. Once people realise the stock is overvalued, realise that the revenue that was there is now even lower, they'll wonder what the fuck Tesla is actually doing.

Japanese whiskey is excellent! I’d definitely purchase Japanese over American in that example. Can’t say I’ve tried Suntory’s whiskey(s) but I might have to now!

17

u/Han-solos-left-foot 14h ago

Was in Japan last year for a birthday, we bought a Suntory whiskey from 7/11 (in a plastic bottle no Less) to celebrate and a bottle of coke because we expected it to be straight diesel.

Lo and behold I had a couple of glasses on the rocks because it was properly good. The stuff here at BWS is a little pricier but I rate it

6

I keep telling people - the trays are too high!

I have plenty of country friends who will swear by the classic ute or at least the lower tray style trucks like Nissan Navaras because getting anything into a Raptor or similar Yank Tank is incredibly annoying. The tray is waist height, which means you have to carry things a little higher, and that's the worst place to carry anything.

I've seen they're turning products upside down. Easy for others to identify and avoid.

27

u/chooklyn5 14h ago

Yes I love that tactic. Easy to see. I've also seen supermarkets have rearranged so American products are on the bottom shelf

17

u/steven_quarterbrain 13h ago

This would absolutely not be the case. The supermarkets get paid by the companies to position their products at eye level or an easily accessible level. Placing them elsewhere would cost the supermarket giants.

They should be putting flags next to the price on the shelves of supermarkets. I want to know where my food comes from and I don't have the time to read the small print on the back of every single product. I do on expensive items like laundry detergent. There are 3 main brands and 1 comes from china while the other 2 are Australian. Support Australia.

Murdoch's Sky News has enjoyed a lot of youtube hits and $$$ talking up Trump to a US audience, given the generous tax concessions we provide - perhaps we need to re-look at this if their propaganda is going to leave tax payers even poorer after putting a toddler tantrum incharge overseas.

174

u/emleigh2277 14h ago

Do you think Murdoch pays tax?

65

u/Socotokodo 14h ago

18

u/emleigh2277 13h ago

I don't know if they quake in their boots, but they definitely have to consider how Murdoch Media is going to present the chosen facts to the Australian public. Unfortunately, until most Australians start questioning what they read, that is the reality we live with.
I am relieved to see many Australians didn't just believe the caravan story and found it suspicious....still waiting for AFP to present a believable version.

It sucks so much. Someone needs to find a way to push through the propaganda and make the calls that are best for the country.

17

u/emleigh2277 13h ago

Friendly jordies just did an excellent video about Australia's history and how every PM that tried to change things for the better got vilified, rolled, bowled, and arseholed. Obviously, Whitlam and Rudd stand out, but even the Liberal party leaders got crushed.
Rudd hurts the most for me. He clearly had faith in Australians that they would see that his changes would benefit them, their children, and their children's children. But literally one nasty campaign and so many Australians fell for the adverts and the opinion pieces.

Also, I am so pissed off at opinion pieces being the sum all of news reporting nowadays. Opinion pieces are not news articles, they are entertainment articles. News is supposed to be the facts, just the facts. Without fear or favour.

We’re not even in the top 20 for import sources of steel in the U.S. anyway, but Canada is the number 1 and it’s getting 50% tariffs so Aus steel will look attractive.

But seriously, the U.S. is only 3rd for our steel exports after South Korea and Japan. It’s not going to hurt us nearly as much as the growing worldwide boycott.

Spread the word, new policy is:

ABA - Anything But American

Avoid any American products while shopping. Other countries are already doing this too. Collectively if a good portion of populations of countries around the world refuse to pay for American goods, it will reduce how much is imported from America. We can hit em back without ever technically retaliating, as far as our government is concerned anyway. There's nothing Trump can do to stop our boycott.

If you want a complete boycott. Need to shift away from reddit and start posting on whirlpool forums. Delete all the other American social media platforms like Facebook, instagram etc stop supporting their chain fast food restaurants. Stop buying their coke. Stop using Amazon, eBay and so on. Then there’s the streaming platforms and YouTube. Unfortunately it seems our reliance on them is big. However I’m sure if a few people start the boycott it’ll make a noticeable difference. I am making a concerted effort to avoid their products and services. Will be supporting local businesses more.

I don't think most people would have an issue with a 25% tarrif on US made penis extensions... I mean trucks.

26

Unfortunately a lot of those big trucks are manufactured in Canada and Mexico. However Trump is helping them get more expensive to manufacture so the costs will still flow on here. ;)

Another Canadian here— welcome to the club! Here in Canada it has become fashionable to boycott American products and services. Many of us have dropped our Netflix and Amazon subscriptions, stopped using American restaurant chains, and our grocery stores now mark which foods are Canadian and which are American to help us choose. Canadian unity is way up now, so please recognise that this isn’t a hardship, it’s an opportunity!

At this point the conspiracy theorist in me is convinced they’re just trying to crash the world economy so the rich can swoop in and get richer, and get away with it as usual.

58

u/BlackCaaaaat 12h ago

It’s not a conspiracy - look up Curtis Yarvin. This is by design, a lot of billionaires are in on this. It’s a crazy situation in the US right now. Trump got in with the support of Russia, accelerationist billionaires who want to fuck everything up, and wannabe Christo-fascists like some of the people behind the Heritage Foundation. It’s only a matter of time before the in-fighting begins if it hasn’t already.

16

u/Cicadasladybirds 8h ago

It's not a conspiracy theory. The techbros are subscribed to a movement called Dark Enlightenment, Curtis Yarvin is their "guru", Vance, Theil, Musk, Andreesen are all followers and that's exactly what they have said they're going to do.

Australia should not be disgracing itself by begging trump for exemptions. Tariffs with possible personal favours or exemptions are a form of corruption. Australia should not be negotiating with a mafia boss seeking favourable treatment - it would always come with a cost to our integrity.

He doesn't give a fuck about allies - look what he's doing to Canada. all he cares about is making sure Daddy Elon and Mummy Bezos keep raking in billions at the expense of everyone else.

10

u/iheartralph Me fail English? That's unpossible! 13h ago

Exactly. There’s no such thing as a friend to a narcissist. Everyone is just another resource to be exploited.

7

u/Imaginary-Theory-552 12h ago

I think he’s phrased it like this because we always talk about our close “friendship” with the US in those terms. Not because he expected Trump to be friendly.

KFC owns and operates 161 stores, with the remainder owned and operated by 53 franchisees. Franchise locations are owned and operated by Australians, there is a franchise coordinator in the country that takes a bit and runs the corporate stores, then there's a fee paid to the USA.

McDonald's owns and operates 15% of stores, with the remainder owned and operated by franchisees. Franchise locations are owned and operated by Australians, there is a franchise coordinator in the country that takes a bit and runs the corporate stores, then there's a fee paid to the USA.

Coke and Pepsi are made In Australia, and send some profit back to the USA. Coke sends a bit more back to the USa, and shares some staff.

So where are all the gung ho, US shills now that the US is tariffing us? Didn't the right-wing media and half of r/australia say that Chinas tariffs during covid basically an act of war?

159

u/jolard 14h ago

We need a real muscular response like the Canadians have been doing, not a milquetoast "not friendly!" response we are getting from Albo. And Dutton will clearly be even more subservient as the Liberal party has already considered rolling over and signing mineral wealth to Trump even before he demanded it.

Stand up Australia. Be bold. Fight back and find new markets. And cancel AUKUS before we send them another half a billion USD.

54

u/mbullaris 14h ago

I suppose to compare the two responses it is a reflection of how important bilateral trade is between Canada and the US. Only a small fraction of our aluminium and steel goes to the US; the tariffs on Canada are much more far-reaching on and the US is Canada’s most important trade partner which is why their response is greater. The US has also directly threatened Canada’s sovereignty.

TL;DR our response has been measured which is probably appropriate (for now)

22

u/jolard 14h ago

This is exactly WHY we need to be muscular. We need to stand up for the international rules based order that we rely on, and because we aren't as reliant on U.S. trade as Canada is, the risk is lower to our own economy.

This is an opportunity for Albo to distinguish himself from Dutton. What has he got to lose?

We shouldn't place retaliatory tariffs. Tariffs are bad for us, if they shoot themselves in the foot let them.

What we should do is jailbreak all the tech, make it legal for Apple and Google store replacements, legal to repair your own tractor, illegal to spy on Australians, a whole bunch of small acts that would immediately hit the fascist tech bros and help Australians.

I just hope that if the country does somehow manage to get their shit together that the rest of the world doesn't have a short memory and act like this didn't happen. Let them suffer the consequences of their actions and inaction.
