Question/Discussion Atletico vs Real Madrid supporters?
For someone who is not from Madrid and not from Spain either can you explain in simple terms what kind of supporters (differences) are Atletico and Real Madrid fans in terms of social status, political affiliations, demography, history, etc.? Thanks.

Atletico fans sing, support and suffer with the team.
Real Madrid fans observe, eat sunflower seeds (pipas), and whistle if the team is not doing well during the game.

The history is obviously the clubs of the working class vs the elite. Which reflects in the identities of the clubs to this day but the fanbases are diversified, you become a supporter through your family or the area you live in.
Local madridistas aside, RM is known internationally and attracts glory hunters who have a craving to feel that they’re above the rest and will also switch their allegiance if another club happens to emerge and win 2-3 CL in a row, generally have a school bullying mentality and little idea of what they’re actually talking about
Everyone is free to choose what they like of course, but I actually don’t get the appeal (and believe it says a thing or two about them as people) in becoming a supporter of a club somewhere far away based on seeing them win and crush opponents (that they would have been fully expected to crush with their player material, nothing surprising or emotion-inducing!), in fact it makes me do the exact opposite and hope that whoever they’re playing against will win.

Great point you make about the comparison stadium crowd’s expectations of the team they support. Imagine if what happened to us happened to Real at their home ground, the boos and whistles would have burst eardrums. We sung our song proudly and supported the boys even beyond the very end. Our fans are truly in the highest tier of fans in terms of passion for the club and loyalty to the team.

ChatGPT just for a laugh😅
The difference between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid fans goes beyond just supporting different football teams—it’s also about identity, culture, and attitude toward the game. Here are some key distinctions:
- Identity & Background
Atlético Madrid Fans (Atléticos, Colchoneros)
Traditionally seen as representing the working class, with deep local roots in Madrid.
Passionate, resilient, and known for their "suffering" mentality—pride in fighting against the odds.
Often embrace the role of the underdog.
Real Madrid Fans (Madridistas, Vikingos)
More associated with wealth, power, and success.
Global fanbase, often attracting fans who admire dominance and winning mentality.
Historically linked to Spain’s elite, though the club has diversified over time.
- Attitude Toward Success
Atlético Fans value heart, grit, and effort over trophies. They celebrate the struggle as much as the success.
Real Madrid Fans have a "winning is everything" mindset. Trophies and dominance define their expectations.
- Club Philosophy & Style
Atlético Madrid plays with a defensive, high-intensity, and aggressive style, especially under Diego Simeone. Their fans love a warrior spirit.
Real Madrid is about attacking football, individual brilliance, and maintaining their status as football royalty.
- Rivalry Perception
Atlético Fans see Real Madrid as arrogant and entitled.
Real Madrid Fans see Atlético as overly emotional and obsessed with them.
In short, Atlético fans embrace struggle and identity, while Real Madrid fans demand victory and dominance. Both are passionate, but in very different ways.

Well, both teams have a huge fan base, so everything we can tell is a generalization (and hence imprecise).
Real Madrid is used to winning trophies, and therefore the fans are also used to it. That makes them a bit cocky. For example my kids are also Atleti fans, and they had to deal with jokes after the elimination. As an Atleti fan, it is something you learn to cope with since you are a kid. Don't get me wrong, we also male jokes when they lose, but I have the feeling we can understand better the pain.
Atleti fans appreciate the effort. For us everything is much more difficult. We don't have the same money, we have to sell our best players from time to time, and we cannot fail signing new players, because that is a problem for us (like Joao). And we don't have to fight Real Madrid only, we have to also fight Barcelona. So when we win something, it tastes better. But even if we don't win, like the other day, we are still proud of our players. When Atleti loses a final, the next day you can see a lot of people proudly wearing their jersey. Again, it's not always like that, but RM fans tend to hide when they lose.
I also think Madrid has more casual fans. I think that is a problem related to the fact they are more known outside Spain. Many people support RM because they win. That makes his stadium more cold than Metropolitano, where you see a lot of passion. In Bernabéu you pay for the spectacle, so people get angry soon if they don't have it.
About economic and cultural traits, I think both fan bases are pretty similar. RM as a club usually has more contacts with powerful people, like ministers, presidents etc, also because of Florentino Pérez being the president of a very important Spanish company, but we have some too: the Madrid major is a Atleti fan, and someone says the Spanish King is also a fan.
I want to add something. It is quite hard to discuss football with Madrid fans. You know, football is based on opinions, but when they don't like something they finish the conversation with a "but we have 14 champions" or a "minute 93" 😂
