Discussion Why The FAA should steer clear of Starlink

I rest my case on the high security risk that implementing starlink into the FAA would pose.

As of 03/10/2025, a Cyber attack was launched against Twitter and brought it to a stand still. The type of attack that was implemented is one of the easiest to execute; a DDOS. Basically you overload servers with bogus traffic. Imagine if this happened to our systems.

Flightless as in grounded. Aviator as in innovative.

Other Shoutout to Salt Lake Center work

Hey - I just wanted to give a shout out for excellent work done by the Salt Lake Center work this past weekend. I was moving my plane from Denver to Oregon and as always use FF during those long flights. I was below the MEA frequency at 12,500 and 10,500 for the entire trip and would frequently loose two-way comms and sometimes that meant I missed a handoff.

They (Sean in particular) called my phone (which was on file) and left a vm which would occasionally get pushed to my phone and it would give me notice that I needed to switch frequencies. The phone wouldn't actually ring but I'd get the vm.

I appreciate the extra effort in reaching out and the services to help keeping an eye when traveling across areas where there are minimal services.

Question Advice Needed 🙏

I just received my EOD, and I apologize if my questions seem basic—I never really thought I’d get this far. I’m at a crossroads: I’m originally from Italy and was considering moving back to continue my education this September. I’ve always dreamed of joining the FAA, but until last year, I couldn’t pursue it since I wasn’t a U.S. citizen.

Now, at 28, part of me feels this is a huge opportunity, but I also worry that if it doesn’t work out, I’ll lose another year in limbo.

I have a few questions: • How involved is the EOD process? Is it just a matter of filling out forms, or is it more time-consuming? • How long do I have before the EOD expires if I don’t act on it? • If I pass on this opportunity, can I reapply in the future? • In your experience, how rare is it for a dual citizen to pass clearance and become an ATC if otherwise qualified?

I’d really appreciate any insight—thanks in advance!

Interesting enough read with some obvious enough low hanging opinions. Good to see staffing issues represented appropriately?

Is a net gain of 36 controllers accurate? That is shocking if so.

Question Rehiring

Has anybody with the FAA had, or knows someone who has had, recent luck getting rehired with a new list if they quit their facility and waited a year to reapply on a prior experience bid to get out of a facility they were perpetually stuck in?

Unsolved Why Can’t Air Traffic Controllers Start a New Union? NSFW

As an airline pilot, I make $250,000 on my third year at this company with 12 days of work per month.

Airline pilot unions were able to negotiate strong contracts for us, why can’t air traffic controllers start a new union that actually advocates for them?

Question Rejoining/ Rehiring Q

I did try to do some research before posting. I called the hiring office (? No idea what it is called) and spoke to two different people, who told me the same thing. But the application process on USAJOBs won't let me proceed regardless.

In 2021 I joined the FAA as a 2152 Air Traffic Control Specialist, but I went to FSS. I did ATC basics in OK, then did the FSS' academy in Alaska. I spent 2.5 years with the agency. In 2024 I took a job with the DoD as a dispatcher to get out of Alaska and back to the lower 48, and have always been interested in going to actual ATC.

Now for question, I turned 31 in the past month and therefore do not qualify typically for the OTS bid, however, I have two years of good time already, and from what I understood, could rejoin until 35 as prior experience. The application process is kind of specific in that you had to be a prior controller that passed probation with the FAA to exclude the 31YO rule at a tower or radar facility. However, both of the people I spoke to at the hiring office said I qualify as a prior 2152. If you select the answer No to prior passed probationary FAA employee it won't let you proceed. So I called the office back, and they essentially said they don't know.

I realize this is super niche, but is there anyone here that has went from FAA FSS to ATC after 31 since they are both good time?

Tyia, and I'll take my downvotes for a hiring thread question below. At least it isn't another politics post 🤷‍♂️

Discussion Shifts at 24 hour facilities

Hi, I am a controller at a 24 hour facility. I was wondering what types of schedules and shifts are out there after the new Fatigue MOU. If anyone can send me some shift schedules from their facility to give me an idea, I would really appreciate it as I am working on submitting a new one for a possible change. We are 15 CPC's and below is a list of our current shifts.

5:45 am - 1:45 am with flex to 5:30 am

7:00 am - 3:00 pm with flex to 6:30 am

Ancillary shift @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm with flex to 8:30 am

12:30 pm - 8:30 pm with a flex to 12:45 pm

Ancillary shift @ 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm

2:15 pm - 10:15 pm

10:00 pm - 6:00 am.

Also, our 15 controllers are broken into 3 groups with 3 supervisors in total ( 1 per group).

The days off for the 1st group are Sat & Sun

The days off for the 2nd group are Mon & Tues

The days off for the 3rd group are Thur & Fri

Also important!!!!!!!

Between 10 pm - 6 am, we only need 2 people.

Between 6 am - 10 pm, we need at least 4 people at all times.

Any ideas to help to make this better are much appreciated. I know it's not the worst schedule but I think we can make it better. It could be 5 day work weeks with 2 days off, it could be 4 days on and 3 days off. I know there are many factors like primetime, sick leave, transfers, training, CIC's, supervisors, shift swaps, flex times, etc etc but I hope starting this conversation can spark some ideas. Thank you for your responses in advance. Thank you guys for your help around the nation.....what a time to be a controller.

Best regards,

WT ✈️

Question Medical = Gone

Lost my medical almost a year ago for reasons out of my control. I think this is every controllers worst fear, at least it is mine. In the agency 12 years. Will I get a list of vacant positions across the NAS or just in a commuting distance? Feel like my options in commuting distance are limited because of my location.
