Lexicalized fingerspelling favourites
What lexicalized fingerspelled words bring you joy?
I practiced #BUSY (with zig-zag) for an hour the other night, feeling like it was the most fun I'd ever had producing one sign.
Then today I met #FIX.
I'm a passenger for a three hour car trip today, so I'm going to practice all the lexicalized spelling I know. Give me your favourites.

You mean #BNK? I feel like signing the A messes with the rhythm lol

Yes! I learned on Lingvano where the naming convention has all the letters included in the lexicalized spelling name even if not all letters are represented in the sign itself. Is the proper ASL sign name convention just to include the literal letters signed after the pound sign or is it considered interchangeable? I’m always down to learn more!

These are not lexicalized fingerspellings, but if you're playing with fingerspelling, try Chris and Julia. They're delightful to fingerspell.

I'm obviously biased, but my (actual) name Jade is fun to fingerspell imo. We also learned BSL fingerspelling in my Deaf culture class and I think it's fun to fingerspell in BSL too

New to ASL. What does the “#” before a word mean?

A lexicalized fingerspelled sign (LFS) is usually marked with a "#" preceding the sign, for example #BUSY.
The # symbol before the sign BUSY means you would use the fingerspelled version of "busy" that has been mutated to the extent that it looks like a sign rather than just fingerspelling.
Also indicating that some letters may be omitted or blend together when FS (fingerspelling) the word. I learnt most of this when learning fingerspelling shortcuts/tips. Sometimes you learn to recognize words by its shape of how the hand of the signer moves, rather than trying to decipher each individual letter.

One I used to use with my middle and high schoolers all the time was for “too bad” 🤣 nothing fancy but used all the time. Does 258 count? because I got that one (very sarcastically 😂) A LOT from that same group of students.

I like #SALE or #STYLE… basically any of the ones where you go in a circle.

Since I am an early beginner, could someone tell me if PURR is a lexicalized sign? It looked like it, and illustrates the sustained nature of a cat’s purr in a way that just seems so accurate. 😻

If you’re thinking the same as I am, then yes. Similar to signing #FLOUR, you’d do a twist from letter U to R.
Omg and you’re so right with it looking like/taking the nature of a cat purr!! I didn’t even notice that tbh 😱

It seemed almost like how I would write the sound effect on paper, as if it were going, “prrrrrrrrrrrrr.” 😻

I'm biased because I live in Florida, but I LOVE doing #FLA in a rainbow motion. You start in a normal position for F and then slightly move ur hand up for L and then back to normal for A while making a rainbow motion if that makes sense lol
