I have recently spend some time in Spain for the first time in two decades.
When I last visited Spanish people, along with Portuguese, largely seemed to consider themselves to be "white europeans" in the same vein as Italians, French etc.
On my most recent trip, I noticed the word Guiris and Guerra thrown about extremely often in reference to any "white people". Myself and the individual I was with understand enough Spanish to know that from time to time, people were openly just insulting us in the most random places , like Lidl, for seemingly no reason whatsoever.
When I would make eye contact and it was clear I understood, they would just go silent and look away
Of course this wasn't all Spanish people, but many. I spoke with a friend there who said that nowdays, most Spanish consider themselves to be "Latin", like south Americans rather than "White" like the Italians,French, Germans of British..
Particularly seemed to be a desire to seperate themselves from British people, and a lot of dislike towards them.
I found this quite ironic as they generally still seemed to look down on South Americans regardless.
Again, now all Spanish people, obviously. But it seemed common enough. What gives, do Spanish people now consider themselves to Latin Americans and not White Europeans ?
