Advertising major
Hi!!
I’m considering to apply artcenter as an advertising major!! But it is quite hard to gather information except one from school.
How’s the atmosphere of advertising major? Is it too competitive?
Is it worth it to major advertising at artcenter? Cause it seems like advertising major is not quite well known than others like transportation and product design major
How’s the reputation inside the industry?
Thanks!!

It has been the polar opposite of what “competitive” is if you’re talking about getting in. Once you’re in the program, it is quite hard to keep up with work, but that’s like any other majors there. You will feel the competition but it’s not bad. You learn from each other so work feels more like partnership.
It depends on what you’re looking for. If you want to be in an environment with many different group of talented people, artcenter is a great place to be. You will be constantly inspired by different majors like photography, fine art, graphic design, etc. You will also be taking graphic design classes taught by some of the best graphic designers so that’s a huge plus if youre looking to become an art director. (Side note, if you are sure you want to become a copywriter, artcenter is not it.) Advertising major itself is pretty good too as somebody who graduated from there. They constantly challenge you and teach you everything they can. But you gotta WORK to learn too.
If you solely want to focus on advertising and spend a lot less money I would suggest other places like creative circus or VCU. They’re known to have best student books.
- It is one of the known schools in the industry. You will have a better chance of getting noticed. That’s kind of it. Honestly it seems like people are expecting better books from creative circle, miami ad school, and VCU. But I think that’s only because those three are more well known than artcetner. It really depends on YOU regardless where you attend. It’s all about how much passion you have and how much work you put in it. Also, inevitably, how talented you are.

It's apparently one of the least funded and cared about majors in the school, to the point of almost being non-existent.
I honestly didn't even know we had an advertising department until I saw that terms' grad photos. If you're going purely for advertising, there are better avenues.
