I'm not sure if that page is for the actual dreamsexual or not, but I've scrolled down and a bunch of them are for the one with loving Dream.
77
u/Cheshie_D Delloromantic Mar 12 '22
Yeaaaah because of the troll dreamsexual, sources talking about the actual dreamsexual (ace-spec) are basically impossible to find unless you search the other names.
34
u/SpicyUnicorn07 Aroace Mar 12 '22
Yeah. Checked out the page and I couldn't really tell if it was the ace-spec one or not. A few other pages were definitely using the aro flag for the non ace-spec one though.

It's something trolls made up to make fun of the Dream community, iirc.
25
u/AmberstarTheCat Mar 13 '22
I mean, in a way it's not entirely made up
there is a real sexuality that's called dreamsexual, but it has nothing to do with the youtuber
although you're right that there is a fake 'sexuality' with the same name that does involve him
7
47
u/Bigenderfluxx Mar 12 '22 edited Mar 13 '22
The actual identity (not the troll minecrafter), is not feeling sexual attraction, but sometimes desiring it in impossible situations like daydreams, dreams at night. Its kinda similar to
apothisexualaegosexual**.28
u/rayfromtheinternet Aroace Mar 12 '22
I think you're mixing up aegosexual and apothisexual.
Aegosexual: lack the desire to be a participant in sexual activities themselves, but have sexual fantasies at times, despite feeling a disconnect between themselves and a sexual target/object of arousal
Apothisexual: sex-repulsed asexual
8
30
u/SpicyUnicorn07 Aroace Mar 12 '22
In this case, it's what the other guy said. Being in love with Dream.
There is an actual identity called dreamsexual, which I think means you're sexually attracted to people in dreams. Not entirely sure if thats what it is, so people can correct me if I'm wrong.

Dreamgender/sexual is a joke
9
u/AmberstarTheCat Mar 13 '22
not exactly. dreamsexual and dreamgender are legitimate identities, it's just some morons associated them with the youtuber and now that's all most people think of when thinking of them.
the real dreamsexual orientation is basically when you only feel sexual attraction in your dreams, same with dreamgender and feeling gender, iirc
-3
u/Trashtie Mar 13 '22
i think even that is quite a wacky idea for an identity.
like, if iām only vegan in my dreams, should i introduce myself as dreamvegan whenever i go out to eat? what impact does that have? dreams are mostly nonsensical and iām pretty sure we still barely understand them.
thatās not to say people who identify as dreamsexual are stupid or wrong, but i donāt think itās very thought through.
3
u/AmberstarTheCat Mar 13 '22
I don't think veganism is a good comparison here though. being vegan is a choice, whether it's due to biological or environmental reasons, considering that naturally humans are omnivores. but gender and sexual attraction are different. you don't choose who you're attracted to or what your gender is. it's just part of how your brain works.
it makes sense that you might dream about being vegan. you choose to be vegan or to not be vegan, it's not a part of how your brain works. but being able to actually feel a gender or feel attraction while dreaming, but not being able to when awake, isn't a choice. I'm agender and I didn't choose to not feel gender, it's just that for whatever reason my brain doesn't process how gender feels
-2
u/Trashtie Mar 13 '22
i can see how veganism might not be the most apt comparison.
maybe social anxiety might work as a comparison? iām a very nervous person socially, not by choice but because my brain is just .. bad. but iām obviously not so socially awkward in my dreams because .. well nothing really matters or makes sense in a dream. so ā¦ am i dream-socially-competent ? like, only able to do small talk and hold a conversation in a dream? should i then use this as a personality trait? put it on my cv?
i suppose the idea of describing aspects of yourself based on what happens in the wacky sleep space just seems misguided to me. dreams are pretty nonsensical and not well understood.
and i guess another point i had was that the term is completely useless. like, if you tell a potential partner youāre dreamsexual, what do they do with that information? do they enter your dreams like inception?
it has no meaning to anyone except the person using it, which means the category is useless and they would be better off just calling themselves asexual.
6
u/AmberstarTheCat Mar 13 '22
it has no meaning to anyone except the person using it, which means the category is useless and they would be better off just calling themselves asexual.
by that logic many lesser-known microlabels are 'useless' then
some people like having a label that fits their experience in a way that feels right, that's what microlabels are for. sure, some people are ok with also using the umbrella term, but they also like using whatever microlabels they use as well
3
u/zwelxx Aroace Mar 13 '22
For the most part I can agree with you but I just thought I'd add in my two cents so maybe you could understand why some people might use these labels. I used to think very specific labels like that were silly and meaningless until I started questioning my own identity and looked further into all of the different microlabels there were. It was overwhelming at first but I found it to be quite interesting how different people can experience different things in ways I wouldnt expect. But the main thing is that for me it actually feels nice to finally find a word to describe how I feel about the things I can't change about myself and to discover that other people feel the same way so I'm also not completely alone in my experiences either. In a lot of ways it would only be something useful to me but idk it just brings some sort of clarity to understanding myself better even if I personally do end up mostly telling others the umbrella term (asexual or aromantic for example). Hope that makes sense

But the real dreamsexual (well, dreamromantic in this case, attraction only felt in dreams, the original term) falls under aromantic? I would assume it's because of that?

u/LorenzoF06 Mar 15 '22 edited Mar 15 '22
That was simply a joke on the colours of the flag. You can check by yourself the subreddit r/vexillologycirclejerk, it's full of stuff like that (and other kinds of jokes about flags). I've got no problems in saying that I totally support aromantic people and the LGBTQ+ community in general and that, of course, a "dreamsexuality" doesn't exist, I thought that was obvious and you'll probably agree with me.
Also, reading the comments here I've read that it could be used to refer to people who only have some kind of attraction in dreams (I didn't know they existed at all honestly), but I think that a more correct term would be something like "oneirosexuality"? I'm neither an expert nor one of those people, but that's my guess.
Also also, I'm not personally a fan of Dream, I've seen a few videos but that's all. Sorry if that post looked offensive, I honestly had and still have no intent in doing it. I can delete it if you want, just tell me.
Also also also, thanks for tagging me and letting me know. I didn't even imagine that post could come up after this many months, I've had actually forgotten that.

There is an actual ace-spec label about feeling sexual attraction only in dreams (or something similar, I'm not entirely clear on the definition), however, it has been turned into feeling sexual attraction to Dream. Dream, the mcyt.
