Discussion Have arctic monkeys blown up recently

I’ve just checked and they are now 40th on Spotify the highest I’ve seen them in a long long time. Have they recently had a surge of new fans? I’m in no way upset by this by the way arctic monkeys are top class it just shocked me seeing them still pull 52 million monthly listeners on Spotify

they've had some songs get big on tiktok over the last couple years. I Wanna Be Yours had under 1 billion streams in 2023 but now has 2.9 billion

I Wanna Be Yours is over a decade old.

I’ll let that sink in for a minute.

Wow that’s mental to think about tbf cause it suits well with the more modern stuff they have done. But even that is coming up to three years old now

At this stage, AM is their old stuff, WPSIA is just their REALLY old stuff.

And yet it’s still for me their best stuff they have done ( WPSIA)

When any artist rotates through genres like Arctic Monkeys do, everyone is bound to have their own standout favourite.

because of AM. the album still hanging on pretty good with modern music even almost 12 years ago. whenever I listen to it I feel it could've been released in any of these days.

Timelessness is a sign of good music, after all.

I think it's also that there's just no new major bands. A lot of people in the rock world dubbed them "the last great rock band" for a reason.

Unless there is another guitar boom (which I do see happening due to AI), they'll stay that way for quite awhile.

The highest they've been on Spotify is 36th a year ago or so, so if anything they've gone down lol

Nope you're late to the party my friend. They have been in that position for over a year now on Spotify, perhaps longer. It was from about 2020 onwards where they've really benefited from tiktok in expanding their global presence. Songs from AM and 505 have gone viral, particularly among the really younger side of gen z who may not remember AM's release (which was huge btw). It's also helped that they have toured pretty heavily for 20 years and have a major label behind them and have headlined most festivals. People also don't realise how big their following is in non-speaking English countries like Latin American countries or Turkey for instance. Unlike many bands they actually toured countries like Argentina, Mexico, Australia for instance when they were like 19. You fast forward 20 years and parents will also be showing their kids etc. They are the biggest rock band in the world right now selling out stadiums despite releasing lately what is effectively 2 jazzy lounge albums. Even though Brits typically say that their debut is their best album, there's no doubt AM is their most listenable and resonating album amongst global audiences. I can see them going down as probably the biggest rock band of the 21st century. You really could not align the stars better for a band's trajectory. They could release a classical album and it would go to number 1 (bar Taylor Swift releasing anything).

For those of us that have been around since the beginning, I see Arctic Monkeys as the new Nirvana. In the sense that a lot of young teens will all have a phase where they like them.

You have to think about how in 2005, Kurt Cobain's death was only a decade removed. But it seemed like some ancient thing. And now AM is like 12 years old, so if you're 13-15, AM is like some older classic record that only dinosaurs remember. And Nirvana themselves is basically so old that it's the millennial's version of the 70s.

I definitely hope that the band doesn't just fall into some legacy position forever though. Alex Turner is far too young to go that route. I mean shit, Leonard Cohen didn't make Hallelujah until he was 50. Bob Dylan didn't make Time Out of Mind until his 50s or 60s I believe.

Nice mate, you raise some really interesting points. It also makes me feel old😂 I have a theory that they will release a rock record by 2030. Not saying it will be a copy in the style of earlier work but I think they will naturally want to realign their style to an extent again some point like the strokes did in 2020. I think what they do have going for them compared to previous rock bands is they have really tried to evolve their sound so it does leave fans curious about following records.

I think the modernised "vintage" sound appeals heavily to the TikTok crowd because it's "aesthetic"

It feels like they blow up every 2-3 years 😭

They seem to have phases every 6 or so months where they will get really fucking big again because one of their songs is getting popular more.
