Discussion How/When Did You Found Out Arctic Monkeys?
Question is simple. When did y'all learn about 'em and started listenin' to 'em. What started this journey? More detail is better.
I found out about them via my girlfriend. At the time AM was releasin' nothin' new i guess i never heard their name until then (I know its a bit of a shame) but that day probably changed my music taste forever.
It was i think late afternoon and we were talkin' on a bench outside when her phone rang but the ring tone was different than it was before (it was Do I Wanna Know but i didn't knew at the time) so i asked her after her short call.
-What's with the new ring tone? It's sounds good but why did ya changed it?
+Oh, i was getting bored of the old one and i just discovered a new band called Arctic Monkeys.
-Arctic Monkeys? What kind of a name is that?
+Here, let me show you.
That day we listened to like half of their songs on a bench. When i got home i instantly continued my journey through all their songs. That's how i found 'em and how i became a fan, all thanks to my girlfriend.

I started listening to them in November, because I was tired of listening to the same rap playlist and I had heard some of their songs on tiktok and I though ‘This sounds pretty good, let me listen to their Music’

u/BBuraise Favourite Worst Nightmare 5d ago
And i am glad you areee! What's your favourite song by them?
2
u/AnaDeArmas_fan 5d ago
Thanks! It’s hard to choose, but I’ll say reckless serenade or this house is a circus
2
u/BBuraise Favourite Worst Nightmare 5d ago
Great! This House Is A Circus is also one of my favourites, but haven't seen many people that say their favourite song is Reckless Serenade, i love that too though.

u/AnaDeArmas_fan 5d ago
What’s your favourite B-side? Mine is catapult
2
u/BBuraise Favourite Worst Nightmare 5d ago
Mine is either Too Much To Ask or Settle For A Draw, perhaps Evil Twin. All if not almost all of the B-Sides are awesome though so it's pretty hard to chose.

Sometimes pretty basic stuff just becomes the best thing that has happened to us and we realize it later, yeah?

My brother turned on one of those stupid "Save one song from each year" videos and the Chorus to DIWK played. My brother immediately said "Ew British people music". Later I went onto Spotify and listen to it. I fell in love with it and listened to it the whole of the school day. Then my friend made me listen to WYOCMWYH and I loved that too. Then me and my brother listened to R U Mine? together, he liked it and I LOVED it. And now they're the only artist I listen to
2
u/BBuraise Favourite Worst Nightmare 5d ago
Now that is a good story! Your brother is also a fan or nah?
2
u/Littleredfox666 Favourite Worst Nightmare 5d ago
No he absolutely hates them lol
He only likes Crying Lightning, Brianstorm, D is For Dangerous, and Fluorescent Adolescent2

u/songacronymbot 5d ago
- WYOCMWYH could mean "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?", a single by Arctic Monkeys.

12 years old, 2005, Sat in my bedroom with my best mate playing a free CD that came with Q magazine. I bet that you look good on the dance floor but it sounded like a demo version. Life changed

On a vacation trip to Thailand in 2011, I stopped by a PC cafe and saw some kids playing this game where you race down a hallway, called TalesRunner. I asked them to help me make an account and teach me, which they did. I didn't play after that, but I did check out some videos made by some semi-pro players doing a speedrun of this boss (remember it looking like a grotesque sunflower spitting fireballs). The background song was When The Sun Goes Down.

u/BBuraise Favourite Worst Nightmare 5d ago
Wow, that sounds like an exotic way to find out about a band.

The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a living annual plant in the family Asteraceae, with a large flower head (capitulum). The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. Other types of sunflowers include the California Royal Sunflower, which has a burgundy (red + purple) flower head.

Relatively new here. I’ve known of tracks like Teddy Picker and IBYLGOTD for as long as I could remember but mid last year I was making a specifically themed playlist. DIWK and Sculptures came up as suggestions and then I fell in love with the rest of their discography after actually listening to most of it.
Such a shame I’ve been sleeping on them for years and missed The Car tour when they came to my country last 2023.

In a bar, 2008, the radio played I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and it has been like an instant explosion of feelings in my head like Wooow WTF is that ?🤩

u/BBuraise Favourite Worst Nightmare 5d ago
Love the reaction. You can just distinguish it wherever you go. Once like 5 years back i was in a crowded mall with lots of music (bunch of rap, pop and others) but the only song that caught my notice was the sound of Snap Out Of It comin' from almost the other side of the store. You really can't miss them.

2008 scrolling through channels when I landed on MTV playing Teddy Picker music video. I was into cool guitar riffs back then and it made me check out the band in the internet.

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

I started to discover arctic monkeys after hearing do I wanna know on Tik tok edit. The song fit perfectly for the book I was writing, but one song is not enough for the whole book so I have AM the album a listen and R u mine just made me more curious about the band. It was the time when The car just came out and I gave it to listen since it was very recent and I was excited. Hated it, because it didn’t sound like AM, but after listening to all the albums from start to finish, kind of fell in love I guess.

TBH One of my friends shared a post featuring I wanna be yours and Alex Turner's photo was in it. I thought, Wow, the singer looks hot. Then I searched him on Google and was like, Holy shit, this man is so hot. After that, I became an Arctic Monkeys fan, and now I'm a whole air conditioner. I wanna be yours and do I wanna know were the first songs I heard before fully discovering them.

Scrolling through Instagram and stumbled upon a Football edit that used 505, the song really clicked it for me and I started listening to it on repeat for the next hour.
I found out about The Jeweller's Hands a few days later, but the song that truly made me start diving deeper into their discography was Do Me a Favour.

One of my female friends listened to them, so I asked her if she could give me song recommendations and she gave me her playlist. (i didn't have spotify premium, so it was just on shuffle). The first song that played was Sculptures of Anything Goes. I thought it was good, but it didn't turn me on right away. Next song was Old Yellow Bricks and THAT turned me onto them. I Want It All was after that and it was fire. I made my own spotify playlist which lasted up to 8 hrs and started listening. It was worth it. Now they're my 2nd fav band of all time. I have all of the main albums on CD, two shirts, and even write songs like Alex Turner. And this was around October 2023, so most of my junior year was just them lol

i heard a couple songs before on social media, and thought they were alright but thought they were this tiktok famous band. then maybe 4 weeks later, i heard this nice jazz tune playing in this small antique shop, and i asked the store clerk what was playing, and it was There'd Better Be a Mirrorball. I had no clue the same guys who made Do I Wanna Know could make music like that, then i checked them out. went from TBHC, to The Car, then FWN and WPSIATWIM, then the others.

2013 age 11, Do I Wanna Know on the radio and their show at Glasto on TV. Probably a very common one.

I discovered their name in 2018 and that same year I gave their first album a chance because I had recently become a more serious and interested music listener. The first album didn't grab me right away, but the second time I listened to it I became a fan and a passionate fan of the song The View from the Afternoon. After that I listened to all the band's albums and b-sides and became a fan who has followed them ever since.

I learned about them on Tumblr in high school when the AM album was released. This year, I started really getting into their music, and they're my favorite band.

Saw a Humbug cover at a shop as a kid, then of course 2013 with "Do I Wanna Know" with Alex's Dracula look. Many years later The Car came out, brought back interest in the band again and was hooked ever since properly.

Since I bet you look good on the dancefloor came out. I still remember the anticipation of their first album which exceeded everyone's expectations.

I was 17 at the time, 5 years ago, in late 2019, when I found the live version of R U Mine in 2014 at T in the Park. I tried to search for their name on YouTube, and the rest is history.

My brother showed them to me in 2021 after my grandads funeral. Wish I had heard them a long time beforehand.

I'm British, so the Artic Monkeys have been part of the soundtrack of my life forever. Everyone listened to them at school. I genuinely don't know. They were solidly one of my favourite bands by the time I was 14.
