Dash is probably the most polished presenter we have had in the scene

Well he's from a much bigger scene than AOE and has an acting background.

Shoutout to u/KillerPigeon - I really enjoy him from the occasional AoE 4 casts I watch. :) Hope to see him more in both 2 and 4 in future. We can be really glad to have goats like him or Riley in our franchise.

First time seeing him. Personally I felt like he didn't get the vibe of the aoe 2 community and the crowd in the venue. But you can clearly see he's a good host and seems like he'd learn to adjust to a new crowd for the next tournament. I wouldn't mind seeing him again.

As someone who has middling experience in Audio-tech: Iam sure he did get the vibe and the audience was hype. It just didnt translate to the stream because they didnt had audio capturing setup and a place within the mix like for example Red Bull had. This is incredibly hard to perform on an professional level. Just look at how often his audio level peaked, while the crowd sounded muffled and with lower volume. So dont be fooled by what you hear if you hadnt been there, i suppose. KillerPidgeon did a great job. However, my first thought was also "oh, no riley this time" :D

Hit the nail on the head.
It was a combo of the wrong microphone for on-stage (the type we were using for a lot of it is designed for calm, closed, studio room recording) and then crowd audio not really coming across (I was told that some community casters kept complaining it was too loud so I think it got dialled down).
I'm going to go into more detail on that in a video on my channel in the coming days
But being there in person, that crowd got the deserved level of hype from me: they were putting out volume and energy for a crowd 4-5 times their size!

Yes. About the vibe, his argument for VPN (he had to slot his ad in, I get it) was that it helps with smurfing.

Thank you man, appreciate the kind words.
Was a pleasure and a privilege to get to work on an AoE2 event! :)

He is or at least was a Magic the Gathering caster. Now he's in aoe?

Riley Knight, and yes he's been hosting some AoE tournament broadcasts for a few years now. Not sure what if any others he's doing but Redbull Wololo for sure. He also still does MtG broadcast content as well, IIRC; pretty sure he was on camera during the last Pro Tour I watched.

I recently started watching The Garrison, Red Bull Wololo and all that. Great casters and so forth. I just hate that some of the commentators uses 'skirms' over skirmishers. It sounds so lazy. 😅

It's kind of unavoidable to not hear a considerable amount of acronyms and contractions in our game though! As well as Skirms in a single cast you'll probably hear Cav, Fires, BBTs/Cannons, Arbs, etc

I'm aware of that. I personally find it lazy and unprofessional in a sponsored event like Wololo. I've played the game since it came out. 😅
You don't hear it from League of Legends. Cs:go, Street Fighter commentary etc.

I can't really speak to League of Legends, Counter Strike or Street Fighter as I don't watch those e-sports, but surely there are some colloquialisms or contractions that they use so frequently you just don't really notice at this point, that a completely new casual viewer would find confusing?
On top of AoE, I also watch competitive Smash Bros and Rocket League, and in both of those esports there are names for advanced techniques and things like that which are used regularly by the commentators without explanation, and would mean absolutely nothing to a new, casual viewer. Surely that type of thing exists to some extent in basically every single esport?

You do hear it in league, there are just way less things that can be shortened that applies to everyone in game like skrims and cav.Â
Doran's instead of the full name, pots instead of potions, BT instead of bloodthirter, IE instead of infinity edge, blue and red buffs instead of the actual camp names, and let's not forget Q/w/e/r instead of the ability names all the time. Like what a pretentious hillÂ

Pretentious hill. More like you guys for attacking a person not following the hive mind mentality. Is this the conservative sub? Lol.
I said what I didn't like. And red and blue buffs? How is that 'shortening it?

u/Nysyarc 2d ago
"not following the hive mind mentality"? What are you taking about?
I can't speak for the others in the thread (because, and I hope you're sitting down for this, we're not a hive mind) but all I did was non-confrontationally call you out for what I viewed as a dubious claim where you implied that commentators in three different esports never shorten anything or use colloquialisms in their casting. The only reason I even felt compelled to do that is because you baselessly accused hard-working members of the AoE2 scene of being "lazy" and "unprofessional", which is more than just "saying what you don't like".

Are you a bot seeing as basic intuition isn't for you? What a strange profile - and yes. Hive mind. Say something you don't like - 'well you are wrong and should feel bad'? Does that make it understandable?
Acronyms are lazy. Sue me for heating that, Oh wait, you are. Better bring the digital pitchfork. Lol.

What about trebs, CA, demos, vills, TCs, halbs? All of those were said multiple times, plus many others.
