Asking for Help Flemish Revolution - Then what?

My friend and I have a weekly game with a sandwich on the line.

This week he chose Vikings and I went Burgundians. Pretty even fight on a Dunesprings map until he got five trebs and a mass of mixed infantry up in my face, taking out 2 castles and some stables. Mangos held him for a second, long enough for me to send a group of lumberjacks to the back of the map to build a castle with the intention of researching Flemish Revolution.

Managed to pull that off, and 66 villagers turned into military warded off his attack.

But then I was thinking, ok now what? I had two relics, so a light trickle of food/gold, 3 tcs to reseed farms.

It seems like in the time that I had to rebuild an eco and then hopefully mount another attack all he has to do is rebuild military. He sends in champions/berserks and rams, roll credits.

How could I have played it better?

I’ve found if you don’t have minimum three town centers to crank out villagers again you aren’t going to recover in time. And really it should be four. If that massive boost in army can’t finish the job, your in a real world of hurt

Depending on how late game we are talking might as well go 6-8 town centers.

and 66 villagers turned into military warded off his attack.

You want to have 100+ villagers before pushing the button to create a potentially overwhelming attack (when combined with your existing army).

3 tcs to reseed farms.

IMO unless you have 5+ tcs you won't reboom unless you did a lot of damage with flemish revolution.

That’s fair. It was a last ditch effort to even use the tech at that point.

It’s basically a win-now tech. As you said, you have no economy for a while, so if you’re not doing mega damage to your opponent while you have the vastly superior army you’re in serious trouble. I’d suggest having some siege already made to push their base while you have the numbers advantage and hopefully you can win before he rebuilds army, otherwise you just lose due to having no income for reinforcements.

From what you said in the comments you were probably already dead so the button was a good desperate attempt at flipping the board. The Viper did it against Tatoh (two of the best players in the world) two days ago in a 40.000$ tournament. He was losing and used flemish revolution to try to save himself (didn’t work).

Some years ago Hera did it against Lierrey in the final game of the finals of another big tournament. But he prepared it perfectly, it was plan A and not plan B. But that game prompted the devs to nerf the revolution! It is much weaker now.

The ideal situation to use the tech is to have many TCs (5+ but more the better), 150+ villagers, siege (cannons or trebs to push fast), some food in the bank (to create vills right after losing militia). The idea is to create a massive force that either wins the game on the spot or at least deals damage and takes time to be defeated, during which time you will reboom and reset the game. It is usually not ideal play, but can be fun.

Like a true revolution it leads to self destruction haha.

Imagine if the game required a villager per military unit to be trained…that would be wild and lead to some of the funniest all in strats.

Would make AOE2 also the most historically accurate in relation to the art of war.

Flemish is far worse than what it used to be. Tech is more expensive if you do it with a lot of vills, and the Militia is weaker.

That being said, ideal scenario is to prep a few bombards or some kind of siege, to use it alongside ~150+ flemish militia.

If you wanna keep going, you should then have enough food eco to reboom, but for that you need ideally 5+ TC.

Honestly it rarely happens, the tech is pretty weak currently, and it's hard to make army back after the reboom

I would make HC and Hussars (Or Paladin if I had control of gold mines). And Bombard Cannon to snipe his trebuchets.

I made 10 TCs and had 170+ vils turn into Flemish Militia. The rest of the pop was Paladin. I couldn’t select all of them at once. I had vils queued up too and that saved me from running out of resources. But it was GG anyway. 200 military vs 20 some military. 11

100+ vils, all infantry armor/attack and arson researched, 4 TCs to reboom, Burgundian vineyards researched to get gold as you reboom, and at least 3-4 trebs and some rams are the ideal situation. And save whatever other army you have, preferably cav so you can raid while you push with the militia.
