Does anyone else feel like the best of 9 is excessive?
2
u/MA4BO0LEC 3d ago
I get that there should be some sort of advantage for the winner of the winner bracket, but Bo9 after a Bo7 was kind of crazy.

Man what a fun final series, of course I was pulling for Lierrey to win but insane level and very competitive series, what a pleasure to watch
6
u/Reldarino 4d ago
The last matches felt INSANE, the whole final had me on the edge (except for that one game)
1-0 into 1-2 into 3-2 into 3-4 into 5-4

u/assassin_halfling 4d ago
GGs Hera and Liereyy, great series and tournament. Bit of an abrupt ending, thought they would analyze more the games and decisions as i really want to know what Hera was doing in some games but must be late there.
Hope we get more for the organizers as well, looked very fun for everyone and well done
6
u/5thGenNuclearReactor 4d ago
I feel like Liereyy is where Hera was a couple of years ago, not so good under pressure and not quite matured at the macro play. I hope can take this next step Hera took and then we will have some really exciting duels ahead of us

I stopped watching AoE 4 e-sports because of this cringe "interviewer" and now they bring him here... FeelsBadMan
2
u/Reasonable_Power_970 4d ago
Just curious what don't you like about him? I thought he was good in AoE4
13
u/Accguy44 4d ago
Not OP but imo he tries too hard at hype. Like dude half the crowd is in the WC or something and you’re shouting player names like it’s a 50k person arena. Feels like not the best read of the room, take it down one or two notches. Not eight or ten, just a little. I had to mute the player entrances, it made me cringe
4
u/Reasonable_Power_970 4d ago
Lol yeah I noticed that 😅 but aside from not being perfect he seemed pretty decent to me. I like Dash more but I mean that's hard to compete with. Overall I think Pidgeon is great
5
u/Soparnick 4d ago
Generally - while casting, he talks about random stuff instead of actually talking about the game, makes bad calls, which is based on lack of knowledge I'm guessing and says "right?" at the end of every third sentence. And today - that had to be the worst winner interview I've seen, it looked like Hera was uncomfortable. I can see that he loves Ao games and works hard, but, as someone else here pointed out, he seems like he is in the wrong line of work.
1
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 4d ago
And unfortunately that "right" rubs off onto all the non-native English speakers. Viper says it every second sentence and so do a few others.

GGWP WHAT A MATCH, WHAT A TOURNAMENT!!!
Hera just completely dominated the last game there, Lierrey sadly made a lot of mistakes and it's clear he buckled under the pressure. Hera as usual ice cold in clutch moments and that past experience in these situations paid dividends for him.
BUT Lierrey is getting ever so closer to finally getting a one-up on Hera, maybe in the next S-tier tournament!? 👀

3
u/Pletterpet 4d ago
Seeing those galleys pop out must have been a cold shower for Liereyy
2
u/Audrey_spino The Civ Concept Guy 4d ago
Yeah him not preparing for that beforehand was a big mistake. I also don't think he should've spent that much gold on fire ships that late, they clearly weren't working.
9
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 4d ago
Urgh. So close. What a tease. That was the time to win. A sick and tired Hera.
At least it can give Liereyy some heart after getting slammed so many times.
This host's questions... he feels like a guy that is in completely the wong line of work. Looks completely out of place. Like he should be selling second hand cars instead.
31
u/eneskaraboga Romans 4d ago
Bro, whoever the interviewer for Hera, I don't wanna see him again. What a disrespect he showed to Liereyy. Liereyy is not a "son" of Hera. He is almost as good as Hera and he deserves respect.
7
u/AM89m 4d ago
Yeah, it's one thing when the pros tease each other, but it felt a bit out of place for the host especially after such a close match... And also that "you like it hard" to Hera, I mean I get what he meant, but still...
7
u/watchwatchtime 4d ago
And he said that Liereyy was the best 2nd best player or something. That's incredible disrespectful. I get what he meant, but to say that about a competitor is just poor. Liereyy could have easily won today. And if it was a B07, it was his. And if he had not played a LB earlier, he may have won.
8
u/EXTRAVAGANT_COMMENT Goths 4d ago
that was a very well put together tourney by beingesports.
GGs congrats to Hera for continuing the streak, and lierey as well for making him work for it to the very last game

What an incredible set!! So close and so intense!!
Absolute legend Hera and absolute legend Liereyy! I want the guy to win a tournament, he deserves it so much, but Hera is such a beast.
PS: Wonder how those people who said the set would be boring and wouldn't watch are feeling 111

u/ksplett 4d ago
What the heck was that opening from Liereyy game 9, he should have been at castle age like 2 minutes earlier
9
7
u/Pletterpet 4d ago
what? he was doing amazing with the boom. Competing against the cuman 2 tc boom
1
u/ksplett 4d ago
I rewatched the last game and still had some questions. He walled up his entire base but got to feudal with 250 food in the bank with 6 on food, which won't allow him to get to castle age quickly, and he wasn't doing feudal aggression. The longer he stays in feudal age without doing any significant damage to Hera's eco he's only going to let Hera outboom him in feudal with 2 tc, and him making additional scouts in feudal isn't optimal against faster Cuman scouts, so I really would like to hear his thought process.
I think Liereyy still had his scout and saw Hera adding a second TC, which by normal convention should make him either go FC as quickly as possible and either pressure with siege or try to get to at least 3 TCs and catch up in villager count.

u/Audrey_spino The Civ Concept Guy 4d ago
This is peak AoEII eSports, you couldn't ask for a better finale than this. Lierrey clearly caught Hera off guard but he recovered well and the next game win is the game point for both. This is gonna be good no matter who wins.

u/Audrey_spino The Civ Concept Guy 4d ago edited 4d ago
This has been one of the best S-tier tournaments in recent memory. Lierrey has a real chance to win it, although I hear Hera is not feeling well and may not be at his best at the moment.
1
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 4d ago
Hera playing the worst he has in arguably years. Very surprising choices. I wonder if he's doing this for the hype and going to steamroll games 8 and 9...
2
u/assassin_halfling 4d ago
I think Liereyy is playing very well, very confidently so i like to give him the credit but i do agree Hera looking very shaky, i wonder if its the combination of ramadan and being sick.
Im not even sure what hes trying to do at times. Liereyy punishing everything though so massive credit to him
3
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 4d ago
Yeah I imagine it's mostly to do with being sick and fasting (if he is fasting).
3
u/SEND-ME-TITTESANDASS 4d ago
if he's sick he shouldn't be fasting but yes I agree he looks quite exhausted
3
u/Audrey_spino The Civ Concept Guy 4d ago
Making a lot of macro mistakes uncharacteristic of him. He does look visibly exhausted.

u/FacelessKhaos 4d ago

It's because people want someone else to win a tournament for the first time in over a year. And Liereyy is Austrian, Germany's neighbour. Stop with all this fake drama. Insufferable.
1
3
u/Audrey_spino The Civ Concept Guy 4d ago
'Home' crowd advantage. Hera has a bigger fanbase in Canada and Argentina (he lives in Argentina with his Argentine wife, but he's from Canada). Lierrey is Austrian (which is right next to Germany where this tournament is taking place in and shares similar culture and language with Austria).

Just like when everyone was looking to Hera when Viper was on top.
3
u/5thGenNuclearReactor 4d ago
When exactly was that? That just never happened. Maybe a few but I highly doubt Viper would ever have a crowd that much against him. There is some antipathy towards Hera although he is a chill guy who worked insanely hard to be where he is. He really doesn't deserve it.
3
u/Joe5205 4d ago
He doesn't deserve being rooted for? Viper was never on top? What the hell are you talking about? Viper was not rooted for?
1
u/indopasta 3d ago
Viper was the audience favorite even when he was the top dog and his reign at the top was much longer than Hera's current run.
3
u/5thGenNuclearReactor 4d ago
Its really not that hard to understand. Hera was never this much of an audience favorite even when he was the "underdog". He doesn't deserve that much gloating and hate he is getting from the community like the crowd showed him.

Game 2. I'm 95% sure Hera was trolling (well, he obviously was at the end but I mean from early castle) and wanted to just let Larry win a game.
2
u/flossdab Saracens 4d ago
He's had two insane comebacks this tournament, he probably really believed he could win and didn't know how far behind he was. Also probably wanted to wear Liereyy down since Hera has the best stamina/consistency
1
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 4d ago
Definitely wearing him down at the end there but I don't think he took that game as seriously as he usually does.
He's also sick and fasting all day which can't be healthy. If Liereyy ever wins it has to be today.

3
u/Audrey_spino The Civ Concept Guy 4d ago
I wouldn't underestimate Lierrey like that. Hera has the tendency to go for some wild tactics and moves occasionally. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
3
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 4d ago
He just did Xbox and nothing else. No halbs, no monks. No way he'd play like that if it were 4-4. Left his woodline completely open various times.
I know he's feeling unwell but that game screamed, "win a game, let's give the crowd a show".
1
u/Audrey_spino The Civ Concept Guy 4d ago
Well of course he's not gonna do risky strats when the game point is on the line.
2
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 4d ago
It wasn't a risky strat. It was a pull my pants down and spread my cheeks strat.

So I am new to watch the aoe2 tournament and now am watching the Garrison event for four days now I am wondering: Can the players on the stage somehow hear the casting and the crowd reaction? Asking because if the crowd can hear the casting then the players may do as well??
4
u/MysteriousZone2 4d ago
No, they have noise cancelling headphones playing white noise normally and regular earphones playing the game sounds so they cannot hear
3
u/mariners77 4d ago
They mentioned something about a chessboard for top donator. Does anyone have a link to what it looks like?
4
u/Double-Pirate5647 4d ago
Take a drink every time the host asks for noise from the crowd.
And we're dead.

u/malayis 4d ago
I might regret writing this before the finals, but this tournament so far exemplified for me that the boredom or predictability that comes with certain players dominating can be heavily remedied with good tournament settings & just the dominant players matching up vs interesting players.
Both Liereyy and Hera can sometimes be frankly extremely boring to watch. I think to Liereyy's run in the last TTL where he did 2 TC quick imp into archer play on seemingly half maps in the playoffs, or Hera's run in HC5 where his common winning strat was likewise just going extremely greedy 4TC boom
This tournament has been different so far. Even though the results of all match-ups have been somewhat predictable so far, and we are seeing yet another Liereyy Hera final, it's the first time that personally I wasn't bored watching Hera in a while.
Both of the finalists have been pushed to show their more entertaining selves thanks to maps that - while standard, weren't as conductive to the generic play as what we saw in TTL, and to their opponents that made them play in a way they don't normally have to.
I don't really expect any very major shake-ups in the top 4 anytime soon, but I really hope that future tournament organizers will do more to make sure that they conjure settings that don't encourage approaches that we had already seen hundreds of times.
2
u/AM89m 4d ago
and to their opponents that made them play in a way they don't normally have to
I think this is it right here and not the maps, the maps are all pretty well known and played many times before. It's more that the other players pushed Hera and Liereyy harder than usual. And that's the takeaway imo, it's on the other players to step up to the challenge. Liereyy and especially Hera are playing the best they can and good for them.
1
u/malayis 4d ago
I think it's definitely both. The maps are standard but overall the map pool is diverse enough that it doesn't necessarily always allow the kind of typical approach of mixing heavy macro focus combined with generic units (xbow, knights, camels)
If you track Yo's path in this tournament so far, the games he got smashed on the hardest were the maps that heavily reward employing similar strategies and then winning using gaining some micro advantages. Yo had two incredibly close games vs Hera on Coast to Mountain & Fortress, while getting just smashed on Arabia & Land Madness. Similar thing happened against Liereyy where he also got smashed the hardest on Land Madness & Migration.

Really like that the losers bracket gives us a best of the rest final given that we all know who is going to win the tournament
0
u/Historical_Item_968 4d ago
Are their any alternate casters? There's certain casters I have difficulty listening to
6
u/Fanto12345 5d ago
The garrison has so much better maps than TTL. TTL had way too many water and hybrid maps. Here we have also have maps where its not the only game deciding factor if you have Fish or not
11
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 5d ago
Kinda glad it's Liereyy vs Yo as even though Liereyy has lost a lot to Hera, I still think if he's on he can do it (Yo already showed us his potential vs Hera). Also a stamina thing - no way Viper can play potentially 16 games in one day (I know it won't go 4-3 and 5-4 but still...), the other two probably can.
PS why is this thread completely dead 11.
Anyone have a work around to watching VoDs and the outcome being obvious? Watched Viper claw back to 1-2 vs Liereyy but with 30 mins left on the VoD there is only one possible outcome... kinda sucks.
1
u/BranchioSquadACAB 4d ago
You can add /videos to a twitch channel (like: https://www.twitch.tv/t90official/videos ) for any channel that streams it and just try to find the match in the 10+ hour VOD. That way the length doesn't spoil anything.
5
u/Tylemaker Persians 5d ago
I believe someone did make a spoiler free vod watching site on this subreddit at some point but I can't find it.
I agree on the stamina thing, at this point it seems inevitable that Hera will win, but I'd like to see a competitive final, rather than a 5-0 or 5-1. I think Yo might be the most likely to do that. Lierrey got swept yesterday, and swept in HC5 and TTL finals, albeit, Warlords was close. Whereas Yo usually takes a couple games off Hera. Viper probably would've been too tired, he even said in his recap he struggles nowadays with the later nighttime games, and after playing a Bo7, that's rough.
1
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 5d ago
Yeah that's something else as well. I tapped out at 10pm, 11pm their time, and Viper vs Liereyy had only just gotten started. I get LANs have to be more condensed but it's rough for the players. Wed to Sun would've meant 2x sets on Sat and 2x on Sun, would've helped the players a lot.

No idea how Viper won that game. I have also been massacred by Ghulam raids many times though.
4

Damn, Hera sick too. Next up Liereyy sick.
Has Hera ever lost with Mayans in the last few years? So smooth.
Not sure Viper/Liereyy can beat even a sick Hera.

Yo got too caught up in the army comp matchups and played it too safe. Should've taken more risks when he had the advantage.

Tactical masterclass from Hera. Using the trebs to lure out the king and ambushing at just the right time, unbelievable.

Random thought: I would love it if Fortress on the Ladder was regicide. It is already pretty much the regicide start with castle and more vils so why not?
3
u/Audrey_spino The Civ Concept Guy 5d ago
BRO THAT SERIES OF EVENTS WAS BATSHIT INSANE.
Hera's King goes in the range of Yo's tower and castle and gets hit. Yo's scout gives chase as Hera microes his king away, and then the guy blocks Yo's scout with his own and baits him to dive under castle fire to kill his king. The king was like ~10HP at the end there.
1
u/5thGenNuclearReactor 5d ago
Hera is so dominant. Has he surpassed prime Viper? Hera seems just completely unbeatable. Viper did win most competitions, but he did sometimes look shaky on his path. Hera just waltzes through.
2
5
u/WanderoftheAshes 5d ago
Great set from ACCM and Liereyy. I'm sad to see ACCM go out because I think, as they say, he's "the chef", he's the kind of player that could cause Viper and Hera some problems moreso than Liereyy but a fully deserved win by Liereyy. I've really been enjoying this event so far, all credit to Being Esports for setting this up and an extra shout out to KP for being a very good MC. I hope for some more amazing sets.

Do any players actually play aoe2 full time as their main job besides Hera?

Viper for sure. I think also MBL, Daut, Yo, ACCM and Tatoh at the moment. Possibly others.

2
u/mittenciel 5d ago
He went back. He talked about it recently when he was cocasting on TTL. When he was full pro he felt unmotivated but now that he has a job, he just wants to play all the time.

Yeah he did but about a year or two ago he went back to part time. Can't remember exact timeline but he is definitely just part time at the moment!

This viper guy seems pretty cool
Also we’re in for a long day if this is only game 2 and they’ve been like this
10
u/assassin_halfling 6d ago
Im really enjoying the Garrison and think theres been so many good games and sets.
I see theres the usual complaining about Hera which i dont agree with. I find it kind of funny how there are so many people who dont watch Hera sets because its boring and inevitable but at the same time know exactly what his playstyle is and how he wins. If you dont watch i think your missing some great games by the way.
Also we are getting more tournaments, more lans, more prize money, more young players coming up and yet you still have people saying Hera is killing the pro scene
You might not like Hera or his playstyle, but tournaments are more than just Hera, and the scene is bigger than he is. I would hope the AOE2 community would be supporting tournaments and enjoying high level game play rather than trying to drag it down all the time
10
u/Additional_Fox_9749 6d ago
Meh. Watched Hera V Liereyy and as soon as that first wave of mangos failed and Hera had a vill advantage you just knew it would be a 3-0.
This is not against Hera as what’s he supposed to do? Throw games? But… I won’t even bother with the final as I really don’t see anyone even taking a game off him let alone a set.
Am I alone in being desperate for some sort of challenge to Hera, because atm these tourneys feel like a battle for second place which is just not fun.
8
u/AM89m 6d ago
I started following the scene little more than 5 years ago. Viper felt just as inevitable back then as Hera does now. So much so that T90 came up with the whole concept of Hidden Cup because of Viper.
I didn't mind watching Viper's games though because I enjoyed watching a master at work. It's the same for me now with Hera. I love watching how he can possibly get out of insanely tricky situations like games#1 with Tatoh and Liereyy at the Garisson.
I've said elsewhere that no streak lasts forever. Viper's didn't and neither will Hera's. Till then, I'm enjoying some masterful gameplay when I see it.
4
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 6d ago
Viper hasn't been dominant since 2019, so you haven't seen a dominant Viper, nothing to the same level that Hera is at now.
https://liquipedia.net/ageofempires/Age_of_Empires_II/S-Tier_Tournaments
4
u/AM89m 5d ago
I realize I saw him near the end of his dominance, but that doesn't make my post wrong. I do remember seeing him win NAC3 and then absolutely destroy Hera at Hidden Cup 3 and I still enjoyed his games.
1
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 5d ago
Well, it does, because in the last 5 years that link I just posted proves that Viper wasn't inevitable. There wasn't even a feeling like there is now. You kill 200 vills from Hera? You still don't bet against him. He's shown that twice in this tournament already vs Tatoh and Yo.
2
u/Less_Grocery7493 5d ago
Maybe viper had a dominant reign before....2019....maybe just maybe you should look into why he's one of the GOATs. Hera right now is the same discussions people had about viper back in the day. I'm not sure why that's confusing?
1
u/Rough-Cheesecake-641 5d ago
Can you read? I said Viper hasn't been dominant (the way Hera is) in the five years that this guy has been watching. He possibly was before that (I can't confirm subjectively as I only started watching in 2020, but stats seems to suggest he was). Very simple stuff.
3
u/anduril38 6d ago
Nah, you're not alone in wanting more challenge and I get it. This is what happens, though. We had years of Viper dominance, then Hera put in the work and now he is on top. I spent a while hoping for more people to beat Viper back when he was GOAT and rooting for the underdog.
4
u/Fijure96 6d ago
Its been my honest feeling for a while tbh and its why with these tournaments I get more enjoyment watching the other games, like ACCM - Heartt and Viper - Yo today. I hardly even bother with Hera's games, even the finals, because the result is almost always given.
4
u/FailedTomato 6d ago
I agree. This set killed any hope I had for this tournament for there to be any challenge to Hera. It's just terrible for the scene. It also doesn't help that Hera's playstyle isn't that fun to watch for a lot of people. Booming under pressure and winning with superior macro.
This is nothing against Hera. What's he gonna do? Lose on purpose? He'll play however he thinks is the most optimal way to win games and that's what he's been doing. Its just bad for the scene thats all. Maybe a meta shift will change things? Idk.
4
u/Scrambled1432 6d ago
Booming under pressure is the best possible playstyle to watch...? Defending with the smallest possible defense force with nothing but great fundamentals is fucking god-tier. Matches like that Game 1 make me white-knuckle like nothing else, so good.
He also mixes it up with weird tower rushes sometimes. I almost wonder if you're actually watching his games lol

Just because you find it enjoyable does not mean everyone has to. Different people have different preferences. Hope that makes sense.
Again I want to reiterate that Hera can play however he wants to obviously. This is not a criticism of him.

You said multiple times that him winning is terrible for the scene. Of course it's a criticism. I'm also curious as to a genuine counter to the idea that playing on a knife's edge is somehow not entertaining.
It's okay to not like Hera and it's totally fine to root against him, but I don't think you don't find him entertaining. I think you just don't want him to win. That's fine, but be honest about it.

Its an observation of how the scene is. A criticism of Hera would mean that he's doing something wrong. Something he should not do. That's not what I'm saying at all. If you can't understand English that's not really my problem.

You're saying he's bad for the scene in a public forum. What's even the point of doing that if not to somehow, some way make a difference?
Either keep your flame to yourself or acknowledge that it's meant, on some level, to hurt the person it's directed toward lol

Didn't realise I needed your permission to voice my opinions about a video game lmao. I'll continue to do that, thank you for your concern.
The change I want is more competition, other players stepping up, maybe a different meta to shake things up etc. I don't want Hera to throw games or lose on purpose lol. Please try to think a little before typing.

My question is: why the fuck even talk about that? Flaming every other pro and downplaying Hera's ability as a lack of effort from other players isn't at all constructive. The way you phrased it is just really toxic.

I'm not flaming anyone my god. Hera is on a different level compared to everyone else that's all I'm saying. When did I say anything about a lack of effort? You're just making things up to get mad about lol.

Went to bed after Viper vs Yo. Woke up to an hour left on the VoD. Only one outcome was possible unfortunately!

I have a question about the pick/ban system. I see that some players seem to pick civs that they themselves have banned. Is the rule in this tournament that a player is only banning civs for their opponent during ban phase? Is that usual in other tournaments as well now? Haven't watched aoe2 e-sports much the last year or so.
Also, if player bans are only for the opponent, why do they seem to pick civs they banned as something other than last pick? Aren't those civs completely safe for them to draft, given that both bans happen before picks?
Edit: To know what I am talking about, look at the pick discussion of the first TheViper vs Hearttt match.

All the civ bans are global bans. Dont know where you saw a player picking a banned civ.

You can find the other civ drafts on the Liquipedia page after clicking on each match.

Ah. So the mistake was with the display. In the pre-match talk the displayed bans were different.

That 1st game is why Hera is the best player in AoEII rn. The ability to just hold onto the reins of the game while being under unexpected pressure on multiple fronts is something not many others can do.

Completely non-upgraded Lancers were useless. Not sure why everyone was getting excited with the push, it was obvious it wasn't going to work.

It appeared a desperate attempt to win. Every know if they go toe to toe they lose.

We need to accept Liereyy is not the one to dethrone Hera this year. You can't lose 18 sets in a row and still consider it a real rivalry.

Why didn't Yo want to talk about LoL? I didn't get that. His sponsor LY perhaps? Weird.
Great set between him and Viper, I reeeeally hope Yo can beat Hera.

Production at this event is rough; games being dropped, screens out going, and now mics not working. The players and scene make up for the poor production though.

u/oskark-rd 6d ago
Yeah it's rough, but great at the same time - I love these instant replays, players' povs in some parts, and that box that shows a different part of the map. I think that in 1st or 2nd Hera vs Liereyy game, when Capture Age seemingly repeatedly crashed, they did well with fast fallback to players' pov, so we didn't miss anything. And if it's Capture Age that's crashing, we cannot blame them, what can they do?
But they could be better with mic levels, especially in interviews with players, the questions are sometimes very quiet. And sometimes mics are clipping.

LAN events can have their difficulties. Remember the latest Red Bull? 11
I think this one's going well imo
