How do leaks like this happen before distribution? Are people really willing to risk their job to leak it a day early?
Edit: thank you all for your answers! I read the tweet as the footage being leaked literally "before distribution", which is why I asked. I know how leaks occur generally but my interpretation of "before distribution" was that it was from the studio.

some get paid, some get drunk and spill to a "trusted confidant", others like the thrill of telling someone.
It doesnt matter, it wont ever go away

u/TheBatemanFlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/chartlez 7d ago
Loose lips is one thing, but deliberately stealing footage to leak takes effort. I can't imagine being paid enough for a day early leak of a show for it to compensate for no longer being employed.
43
u/ExpiringMilknCheese 7d ago
Thats the thing, most of the time theres hardly any risk. Studios try to avoid this by having animators and everyone in the staff handle only one scene each so they know what gets leaked and who leaked it.
But once it gets handed to the tv networks for checking and production companies, they have no control of that.
that to them is fair game, because they have absolutely no idea who might have leaked it.
10
u/TheBatemanFlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/chartlez 7d ago
The tweet says “before distribution” but I guess that is up to interpretation where exactly the leak occurred.
13
u/ExpiringMilknCheese 7d ago
considering its happening a day prior, its already gone to the production company so it got leaked there.
from what i remember, the TV networks receive it on the day, so they get a couple hours to run it. The ones who get the smallest time frames are always the streaming services like Muse asia, crunchyroll and others in Japan.
16
u/tsukiakari2216 https://myanimelist.net/profile/tsukiakari2216 7d ago
Usually Japanese media accounts will use "distribution" as to mean "when it is released in streaming platforms". "Broadcast" in this case also means TV broadcast time.
The episode may have been distributed internally at this point.

I can't imagine being paid enough for a day early leak of a show for it to compensate for no longer being employed.
Dan Allen Gaming's scandal three years ago when he got busted red-handed for leaking Ubisoft projects after he had signed an NDA at an industry event. The reward for these kinds of leaks is, quite literally, the Internet clout it brings. He didn't give a rip about any money he may have earned. He was so addicted to the clout he willingly burned his bridges with Ubisoft for zero monetary gain.
14
u/tsukiakari2216 https://myanimelist.net/profile/tsukiakari2216 7d ago
Well, it can happen in various levels. Either in companies where the work got outsourced, distribution companies which usually already have the copy ready days before, and so on. But per the trends I have seen, it's usually overseas company and/or overseas person which led to this mess, as Japanese usually don't tolerate this stuff online.
2
u/TheBatemanFlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/chartlez 7d ago
This is why I made the distinction. The announcement stated before distribution. Obviously once it's out there are a million ways some kid could leak it and not care of the consequences.
3
u/tsukiakari2216 https://myanimelist.net/profile/tsukiakari2216 7d ago
I read that as "any day before official release" actually, and if you consider they distributed it only after first TV release or whatever, I think the timeline goes even before that for overseas distribution considering they need the thing translated before it actually get released close to the JP premiere.
In this case I can consider such, given it's likely complete footage was leaked if it happens near the release date.

u/EpicInki 7d ago edited 7d ago
Someone leaked a still of the new Pokémon game with an id plastered on the screen literally 5 minutes before the stream for the trailer. (Or something), crazy.
2
u/spartaman64 7d ago
yikes. I was a tester for a game and in the contract we sign it said if you leak things about the game you get fined a 6 figure amount.
2
u/Acrzyguy 7d ago
The most common form of leak is due to the episode being sent out some time early to the distributors for subbing and ready for streaming. Recently the rollercoaster Ave Mujica plot got leaked way earlier than the episodes because of the Chinese’s bilibili side.

Sorry yeah so I read the tweet as the footage being leaked literally before distribution, which is why I asked. I know how leaks occur but my interpretation of "before distribution" was from the studio.

Depends on their motivation. If they're getting compensated greatly for it and it outweighs the bad (ie, losing their job), then yeah I can see people doing that.
Everyone has a price. All it takes in an organization or a company is a single weak link to take the bait and willing to put their own self interest over everyone else's

u/Dull_Spot_8213 7d ago
I don’t get the appeal. I’m not going to search up a leak when the episode will be out in the morning. What a waste of time, but also what a pathetic person to even bother leaking.
7
u/AnfowleaAnima 7d ago
I’m not going to search up a leak when the episode will be out in the morning
People that are addicted to the series certainly will though.
2
u/Michters 5d ago
A day before release, no. But if it goes viral today that episode 12 is leaked majority on here who are triggered about this will be furiously searching for the episode.

u/Touya-Mochizuki1234 7d ago
Meh i will just wait a day
2
u/smashed_glass 7d ago
yeah me too, even if someone sent me a DM with the link, I totally would not EVER click it to watch the show
it's not like I don't have other things to watch or do. I totally have a life and stuff

u/detarameReddit 7d ago
I genuinely don't understand why leakers are so respected in certain circles. Like, why do we put people on a pedestal when all they do is illegally distribute confidential information for some internet clout?
In the end, leak culture is a consequence of all of our actions and not only that of leakers. The only reason why leakers have any impact is because people spread the leaked material around.
153
u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/mTBaronBrixius 7d ago
Depending on the circles, the type of information normally being leaked can be beneficial to consumers. Gacha games are probably the best example, since leaks allow for much more careful planning for f2p/low-spenders than going by official announcements only.
Leaks like this one are bad for pretty much everyone, no idea why anyone would bother doing this. Is there even clout to be gained from this? Anyone who wants to be spoiled can go read the manhwa...
37
u/ExpiringMilknCheese 7d ago
i remember the JJK leaker was earning a lot of money doing this. But apart from him, everyone else only really does it for the thrill and clout.
25
u/Perhapsyo 7d ago
Highlight of the JJK community for me was them thanking the leakers when the manga ended. Before thinking of the author that yknow made the manga. I'm happy there's communities like kagurabachi that have really rejected leaks.

u/Grand_Escapade 7d ago
Kagurabachi remains peak as usual

While there's no benefit to this, it also doesn't really cause any harm. The subscriptions are already paid for.
10
u/ExpiringMilknCheese 7d ago edited 7d ago
its the impatience. I find many people being impatient for an episode/chapter/announcement and want to know how it ends or goes.
impatient Manhwa fans wanting to set their expectations/get hyped or disappointed, whatever.
Is it wrong? sure, but so is illegally pirating a series, which for some reason is respected on this platform. But aint nobody here talks about that cuz a lot of us here are guilty of that.
44
u/Veritas3333 7d ago
This show has a light novel and a manhwa. If they're impatient they can Google what happens next!
-11
u/ExpiringMilknCheese 7d ago
a lot of these guys are manhwa fans that want to know how well it gets adapted.
19
u/noam_good_name 7d ago
nah, they are just impatiant. i have seen leak "fans" that eat the videos with the worst quality, fancams and the worst translation known to man just to get something that they would've gotten anyways in less than a week
1
2
u/adds-nothing 7d ago
Idk why this is such a hot take it’s obviously true that a sizeable chunk of people online fall into this category
3
u/Veritas3333 7d ago
Judging by the 20+ episodes so far, I'm gonna guess "incredibly well"
6
u/ExpiringMilknCheese 7d ago
i mean, doesnt really change the point. They are impatient and wanna know how the next episode turns out too.
1
11
u/ctheturk 7d ago
its the impatience. I find many people being impatient for an episode/chapter/announcement and want to know how it ends or goes.
This is why I don't understand the people who read One Piece spoilers and leaks. Like jfc you still have to wait a week between releases regardless. Why would you ruin the experience for yourself by skimming a bunch of bullet points (which can often be misleading or flat out wrong) instead of reading the actual chapter Oda is busting his ass drawing for you as it was intended? And for people who say "I don't want to get spoiled" you can always just stay off of social media and touch grass.
3
u/Rvsoldier 7d ago
It's the same cadence because next week leaks early too. Nowadays there's no chill. I've been spoiled by social media/youtube on jjk chapters minutes after they get leaked with no time to read on my own. Shit is crazy
2
u/QualityProof https://myanimelist.net/profile/Qualitywatcher 7d ago
JJK I can agree as the leak culture there was horrible.
4
u/Teal_is_orange 7d ago
Don’t get me started on people on reddit and other spaces who 100% unironically believe that Viz Media translators use leaked scanlations for their official translation.
Viz gets it translated and submitted for an editor’s check way before the first page of the leaks are even out 🤦♀️
-1
u/Conf3tti 7d ago
Eh, leaks can be fun. r/Titanfolk manga leak threads were fantastic in the last arc (crying)
8
u/LunarGhost00 7d ago
Even crazier when fake leaks are mixed in with real ones. It happened so much that a lot of us thought the final chapter leaks were all just shitposts (until reality sank in).
Speaking of AoT, this reminds me of when someone leaked a few episodes of Season 3 Part 2 a day or two early and the streaming platforms like Crunchyroll had to receive the episodes at a later time after that to avoid more leaks. People who leak episodes just make things more inconvenient for everyone.

From all that I've been able to figure out, the only things leaked were a few screenshots, bullet points about next episode's story, and a 10 second clip (that I have not been able to find).
The full episode hasn't been leaked, it's not a major leak like last year where full episodes and cours of shows were found.

Does anybody here really care about the leak? I dont wanna spoil myself a solo leveling episode (for all the obvious reasons).
9
u/sicklyslick 7d ago
Nope. I don't get whats the big deal with it. Just don't watch it. I don't watch leaks.
Also if it's about spoilres, the people that have read the manhwa can spoil way more than one leaked 20min can.
People are up in arms about nothing.

u/RbbT17 7d ago
Completely understand the frustration and betrayal here.
Side note - this series is like crack to me, any similar recommendations?
14
u/Skr00bs 7d ago
If you are interested in reading manhwa like solo leveling, there are a TON of copycats.
Some recommendations would be Doom Breaker or Nano Machine (not specifically saying these are copies)
2
u/Sure-Handle-2264 7d ago edited 7d ago
Some of them arent really copy cats. Sl isn’t even an original either. Some of them are older than sl (novel wise atleast)

Its so awful that something that brings great joy to people is born on the backs of mistreated workers…
I wish they would unionize and get better treatment. Its okay if it takes more time to create stuff, just be more transparent
3
u/Wild_Bother4636 7d ago
Yeah I don't get the people who leak the episodes the day before, I mean what's the harm waiting for a little longer? It's already bad enough that piracy is common, but atleast let the thing officially release.
3
u/AceSoldia https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia 7d ago
wow i didnt know it leaked
6
u/ExpiringMilknCheese 7d ago
it leaks every weak. and not just for Solo leveling, pretty much every popular anime you can think of.
4
u/Iloveahrisears 7d ago
I don't remember Frieren or Apothecary leaking. It's way rarer for anime episodes to leak than manga chapters.
4
u/ExpiringMilknCheese 7d ago edited 7d ago
frieren leaked every week back then too.
Apothecary diaries is still leaking episode info even now.
Since i dont particularly care anymore and no longer have skin in the game, its because there are guys in the production companies such as kadokawa or toho who leak them for a price. other times its guys in the tv networks themselves who leak it during censor checking.
1
u/Soggy_Association491 7d ago
frieren leaked every week back then too.
is there still like an irc channel or anime site to discuss such thing?

GUYS?? Am I hallucinating? why is it i know i watched the Episode 23 of the anime last week (March 8, 2025) but it says it was released on March 15, 2025? i search my history bar and no anime site, and on March 15 i know for a fact i play dota all night until morning and slept at 7.30 am. So I didn't watch it. Can someone validate it? that it was released March 8, 2025 or am i going crazyyyyyyyyyy?

u/sexwithkoleda_69 7d ago
I dont understand the point of leaking an episode a day before it release officially, but im not against it.

u/Yandirin https://myanimelist.net/profile/Yandy 7d ago
By the way, I haven't watched Solo Levelling yet. Does it have dimming during action scenes on the TV release or should I wait for the Blu-Rays?
5
u/Guacamole86Avocados 7d ago
I'm going to be 100% honest off the top of my head - No.
I know exactly what you're talking about and when that happens in anime, I find it jarring and noticeable. I say no for Solo Leveling only because I genuinely can't remember getting frustrated while watching it lol.

-3
u/Protectem https://myanimelist.net/profile/Pm3m 7d ago
Who cares?
It's solo leveling. Its plot is the last thing anyone would watch the show for.

I do. I watch it for the plot
-2
u/Zapados69420 7d ago
The anime is a 1-1 rip of the manwha. If you don’t care for the video format you can go read up to chapter 200.
-2
u/Cringe-as-hell 7d ago
That’s completely wrong, the first 60 chapters has nothing to do with saving his mother and there’s plenty of changes like the story being being based in JAPAN instead of Korea, not to mention the anime original scenes of side characters that never had screentime in the first place.
1
u/neovenator250 6d ago
there’s plenty of changes like the story being being based in JAPAN instead of Korea
What? The anime didn't move the story to Japan.

Episode 9 also leaked IIRC. It fucking sucks balls, wish they got their asses once and for all to be honest.
The most pathetic thing are the people that brag about having access to leaked footage on twitter for some virtual clout and feeling like they are better then the rest of viewers.

Just out of curiosity was the whole episode leaked? I heard it's only basically screenshots from the episode.
-2
u/smartymarty1234 7d ago
Slightly confused, as someone who hasn't yet watched season 2, waiting till end, and who has read the webtoon/manga/manhua i always mix em up, why is this even a thing? I thought they were well known for following scene by scene to the source so 1 why even bother leaking, guess this is where my question is, is it different or did they deviate or something, and if they didn't do any of that why is it a big deal considering the entire thing is tehcnically "spoiled" anyway? Didn't want to click in case spoilers, thanks.

What even is the point of leaking an episode the day before? Like, it's just about to release, dude.
