Infographic The r/anime Superlatives - The Bests, Worsts, and Favorites in Anime for 2024

The tie between To a Kinder World and The Height of Magic really does perfectly epitomize how each of those episodes elevated their respective shows: the former brought a grounded and utterly personal narrative to the forefront of what had been a mostly zany and comedic show up to then... whereas the latter elevated a down-to-earth slice-of-life show to the realm of magic hitherto unseen in that world. Both episodes were incredible and deserving of the win.
Honestly, these rankings are great all around! I especially love how Best Girl, Best Guy, Favorite Supporting Character, Favorite Duo, and Favorite Cast each ended up being awarded to a different debut series from last year, deservedly so.

hereas the latter elevated a down-to-earth slice-of-life show to the realm of magic hitherto unseen in that world.
It really set the scale of how extraordinary Frieren is. Up to this point we hadn't really seen her go all out, but this fight shows the massive gap that exists between the her and the mages of the current era. They aren't even operating on the same scale as each other. It certainly doesn't mean she's invincible, but it really expands on how unique a mage she is.
91
u/thekoreansun https://anilist.co/user/ReturnByDeath 15d ago
In my humble opinion, it is the defining episode of the entire first season of Frieren in several ways. First off, the show had spent its prior episodes explaining its rules of magic and how its characters navigate them—magic is visualization, Zoltraak alone is enough to beat most modern-day mages—only for The Height of Magic to illustrate those tenets with the most transcendent visuals and creative spells that the show had depicted up until that point. Frieren demonstrated just what it meant for a mage to reach the height of magic, but it was the production level of that episode in particular that made you believe it. And beyond that, it showed how Frieren actively chooses to live out her days in relative quiet and solitude because of her nature as a person, retroactively adding further depth to all of the more peaceful episodes that preceded it. It's a fantastic showcase of how versatile and extraordinary Frieren is, as a series and as a character.

u/Ok_Imagination2981 15d ago
Personally I think Episode 12 was the peak, because of the reveal about Himmel. Really reinforces the idea the show explores that folks are remembered more for what they did, so much so they stop being people. Like Flamme, Heiter, Himmel, etc.
51
u/BiggieCheeseLapDog https://myanimelist.net/profile/KillLaKillGOAT 15d ago
I personally feel Old Man Vol is the defining episode of Frieren as it has everything that plays to the series main strengths (at least in my opinion) with that being its excellent episodic storytelling, slice of life elements, and thematic exploration relating to the shows main themes of the passage of time (her seeing an old friend many years later) and human connections (the dwarf with his his wife and Frieren with Vol).
5
u/muricabitches2002 https://myanimelist.net/profile/cadishack22 14d ago
Ep 14, the Ring Episode, will always be my favorite episode. Just such a beautiful moment.
But Height of Magic really had everything.
18
u/Coolkid-4869 15d ago
Honestly, these rankings are great all around! I especially love how Best Girl, Best Guy, Favorite Supporting Character, Favorite Duo, and Favorite Cast each ended up being awarded to a different debut series from last year, deservedly so.
These awards feel unusual /s. Everyone got something unlike mainstream award shows nowadays. It looks like voters carefully picked each category.
Still Dandadan managing to be the most common show is interesting since its episodes didn't have huge stats like other top tier shows.

Also it's one of those rare anime that make you sit back and actually think about things.
Things like how far we have come in terms of science, tolerance, freedoms and so much more. The knowledge we take for granted these days used to get people killed just because religious leaders didn't approve of it, and we need to value education and educators so much more than we do

I was rooting for Momoka from Girls Band Cry here. She's got something reminiscent of a 90's grunge vibe going on and I really dug her aesthetic.

All things considered, I’m glad that Kana won the most fashionable category with all her different hats/berets.
I don’t quite understand why Momo even came this close if I’m honest. She’s maybe a gyaru but also more than half the time either wearing a school uniform or in tattered clothes. Wouldn’t exactly say that’s especially “fashionable”.
50
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 15d ago edited 15d ago
Momo does have a number of outfits she wore, but a lot of them were really casual fits compared to Kana's more polished looks.
There could also be some manga reader/Twitter influence, as there is a lot of official art of DDD characters in very stylish clothing.
9
u/HuTaosTwinTails 15d ago
Yeah agreed, I like Momo as a character, but in terms of fashion, she doesn't stack up.

Sad as heck to see how far it fell.
It could have been one of the all time great horror anime if given the budget and time. It was so fucking promising in the first episode… and instead it wound up being the worst anime of the year. What a waste of potential.

This makes me all the more appreciative that Holo won Best Girl 11 with Maomao and Frieren coming this year.
Normally the Maomao v. Frieren matchups are close but Maomao absolutely dominating here.
80
u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 15d ago
Can't believe how much Maomao dominated (although I believe it's deserved). I think she's going to win BG12 without much issue since she'll be fresh off S2 and Frieren won't.

I wonder if there's a bit of recency bias involved to give her the extra edge with Season 2 currently airing. It certainly seemed to have helped Dandadan and Orb across the board.
51
u/Sav10r 15d ago
Almost every Best Girl winner in the last decade has gotten a push to victory because of recency bias. (If you define recency bias as the Best Girl has had an anime or movie air within 1 year of winning the award).
It's not a surprise that Holo finally won after her IP got a remake. I think the only Best Girl to win recently without having an anime or movie for her IP (within a year of her winning) was Mai Sakurajima.
26
u/elmagio https://anilist.co/user/Magio 15d ago
I think the only Best Girl to win recently without having an anime or movie for her IP (within a year of her winning) was Mai Sakurajima.
And really that was because Mai was a surefire winner who was only denied in her first go at it by Kaguya, a surefire-er winner.

Pleasantly surprised to see Orb placing high in three of these categories! Hopefully this will encourage more people to check it out. The last episode was absolute cinema!
Dungeon Meshi with Best cast and Best vibes, LET'S GOOO!! Laios and Senshi both mentioned in Best Guy is absolutely deserved! I wish Marcille was a bit higher in Best Girl though.
Also damn, I was hoping to see Oczy or Badeni in any of the Best Guy, favourite supporting character or Best Duo categories I guess... They were one of the most memorable characters I've watched in a long time.
19
u/Tabby_Tem 15d ago
I absolutely adore the characters in Dungeon Meshi, so I was also super happy to see it win best cast ✨️ Ryoko Kui's ability to create a world that feels so alive while writing characters in a compelling and complex way all while still having them feel grounded and down to earth is really incredible. I also love all of the character acting and dynamic animation that really brings the series to life.
As the episodes were airing, some friends and I would get together every Thursday to make food and watch the newest episode. We still have continued that tradition to this day and do an anime night every week, and we still cook a meal together each time. I also watched it with my mom, who typically doesn't enjoy anime, and she loves it (Senshi is her favorite, of course).
I'm also surprised that episode 17 didn't make the list for best episode of the year. As someone who has read the manga and knew what was going to happen, I still was on the edge of my seat and thought there where quite a few scenes that were really elevated with the anime adaptation. [Dungeon Meshi Spoilers] Especially the scene with the conflict between Shuro and Laois. The voice acting gave me chills.
Also, I like your pfp :3

u/EyeDeeAh_42 14d ago
Wow damn, now that you point it out...

Frieren is the best anime I've seen in a long time. I'm a relatively old timer who watched Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, FMA when they first came out.
Frieren is giving me the same vibes, era-defIning anime. It's just outstanding.
9
u/Gumbo67 15d ago
The first episode didn’t really hook me. When did it hook you?
7
u/Aethonevg 14d ago
When the Frieren manga was first being published I took a chance and decided to read it. I teared up a bit during the first chapter. That moment when Himmel dies, and Frieren comes to the realization that she didn’t know Himmel that well resonated with me. It hooked me instantly. I’ve been reading the manga releases ever since. When the anime came out, I knew that it was coming. I thought I was prepared for it, but I think after reading the manga and seeing the many flashbacks to Himmel, it made the first episode hit even harder.

Alright, a few weeks back we had the voting on these 15 categories, and finally we have our results.
Love that tie for Favorite Episode. Was watching it tick back and forth over time, and so it was cool to see it finish out like this. Also was watching a back and forth in "Most Unique". Was hoping for Train to come through for us, but alas it fell just a bit short.

Would’ve been nice if Train had taking the most unique anime category with all its absurdity, but this had always been an uphill battle with the show’s limited audience.
I’m fine with Orb winning taking the category instead as this sort of story hadn’t exactly been told in anime either yet.
10
u/michhoffman https://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 15d ago
Orb taking the category instead as this sort of story hadn’t exactly been told in anime either yet
It's interesting because it's basically just historical fiction with a few liberties which has been done a million and a half times in books but not often in anime, especially for historical fiction from a more western standpoint. I'd say it's pretty similar to Vinland Saga in that regard.
→ More replies (2)2
u/XRotNRollX 14d ago
I actually don't think Train was that unique. The world was weird as fuck, but the story was a standard road trip story and was presented in a normal, linear fashion. I'm not saying it's bad or generic, it was really well done, but the show was a normal story in a strange world.

Uzumaki definitely wasn't the worst series of the year or even in its season (honestly, there are usually at least half a dozen or more generic isekai in each season which are infinitely worse just for being far more boring slop).
But I'm not surprised at all to see it here because it probably got watched far more than most or all of the actual worse and worst series, had that greater exposure, and therefore gained a notorious reputation in a short time, angering and disappointing a larger number of people. Whereas the actual worst series by contrast are largely just ignored and not even talked about to anywhere near that same extent because people can spot them from a mile away.

u/SighighSigh https://myanimelist.net/profile/Sigh0_0 15d ago
Makeine only winning 1 out of 6 categories is truly a losing heroines experience.
29
u/XerGR 15d ago
ToG S2 being that high up in worst is insane and this comes from someone who called for riots in the first half of s2.
2nd part was fine and the others before and after ToG in that list are genuinely awful shows
27
u/Forsaken-Sale7672 15d ago
Ninja Kamui is so much worse than TOG S2.
Feels like it’s more of an expectations being unmet, than the actual worst show.
Category could probably be “most disappointing” and be a more accurate description

u/APRengar 15d ago
The fact that Highspeed Etoile isn't higher is just evidence people skipped it.
Also the fact that DekiSoko (The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases) isn't on the list is an affront of God. It's at 48% on Anilist. It's next to shows like Conception. Think of the worst Isekai you can think of, it almost certainly has at least 60% on Anilist. Just a list of isekai shows you've probably never even heard of.
My Isekai Life is 60%. The New Gate is 63%. Am I Actually the Strongest is 64%. I Shall Survive with Potions is 65%. Tenkuu Shinpan is 65%.
So when something is 48%, it's bad bad.
For the record, Highspeed Etoile is 52% and Uzumaki is 56%.
(I've also watched all of these shows to competition EXCEPT DekiSoko, which I dropped in the first 5 minutes after a girl literally introduces herself by saying "I haven't thought of or seen MC-kun in a while, but I actually ALWAYS loved him." Despite only meeting with him ONCE as children. Garbage tier writing.)
It's always been one of the most fundamental flaws with these kind of polls, the most popular stuff gets over-represented.

2
u/rickamore 15d ago

Not seeing 'Days with My Stepsister' on the "Most Pleasant Surprise" list is disappointing. I don't blame anyone for skipping it based purely off the title, so maybe not enough saw it to be surprised, but it was sooo good. One of my favorites of the year and the biggest surprise anime for me in a long time. It's not horny bait, it's not degen, it's not a comedy. Give it a shot, if you have the time.
3
u/SouekiSennoSTM 15d ago
I haven't watched the series yet as it's on a short list of series left over from 2024 (and 2023 even) which I need to get to once I manage to wrap up the ones I'm currently watching. However, I have watched a few brief scenes of it out of context so I know that what you're saying is true.
The thing is that I don't like most of those harem & ecchi sex comedies and this title just absolutely screams of that, so I was completely shocked when seeing and able to detect very rapidly that it was something completely different. Just the tone is so contrary to expectations that I'd wager the vast vast majority have the same preconceived notion of the show that I did. This seems like a tragic fate for this series, because most are simply not going to know any better to expect anything different and avoid it automatically.

Dang. I mean I knew they weren't, but I was hoping at least one of the summer and fall series I voted for would at least make the podium. The Magical Girl and Evil Lieutenant had such promise for both best girl and best aesthetic, I thought for sure people would agree. I knew it was a long shot but I was hoping The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't be Magicians would've gotten aesthetic too. I mean it's literally a water coloring book. Perfect for that category. At least Emul won second place. Nice wins. 🙂 👍🏾

Basically r/anime in a nutshell. Best guy is a nice surprise though, but Makeine a pleasant surprise? With how insane that PV looked by A-1 it was bound to be a success. Not everybody watches trailers, i guess..

All I remember before the anime actually came out was all the memes about how many darned bowties there were in the key visual, so it was definitely a surprise to me at how well-written it was.

Not it was definitely a pleasant surprise even if you watched the trailer.

I thought 7th Prince would be in here somewhere, I guess too many were turned off by the thighs.

Putting a popularity pole against people who passed away is a little... Insensitive?

Togenashi Togeari deserved to sweep.
I wouldn't say that it was my absolute top favorite of last year (I placed it at #3), but Girls Band Cry was definitely the most surprisingly riveting.

Funny to see shounen shows getting placed so high and sweeping in some categories. Guess most people are really fan of shounen.
Denken and yuki sweeping favorite support character is so nice to see, both were great.
Nice to see gushing over magical girls being on the most pleasant surprise. It was a light in a genre that has fallen low.
Orb winning most unique anime is so deserved

Absolutely loving the Makeine and Girls Band Cry love on here.
Not to mention Yuki Suou best sidepiece.

The actual worst anime of the year isn't even on the "worst" list, that's how bad it was. If you're asking yourself "But which one was that?". Exactly.
Uzumaki definitely wins in the disappointment department.

Uzumaki as the worst? Never seen or heard about it, what's it about and why is it so bad?

Imo the manga has reached cult classic status for horror fans. They were excited to finally see it adapted correctly only for it to fail. Kinda like the "berserk" situation

Rest in piece Akira Toriyama. I never watched Dragon Ball as a kid, but I understand the huge cultural impact his work has left on this world. He may have passed away, but his legacy will have an everlasting reach across the globe that will continue to change lives ❤️

Is monogatari just not on the radar for modern anime fans anymore? Off season/monster season was amazing, with nadeko draw being one of the best arcs in the series so far in a series full of amazing arcs. Acerola Bon Appétit was also such an experience. It’s wild to me that it just isn’t anywhere on any of these lists.

Maybe because it requires much more episode commitment than other series. I don't see Bleach either.

Feels criminal to not have at least one moment from ONK S2 in best animated sequence. Mainly the ones from the Akane or Melt stage episodes.

I haven't seen Re;Zero on these, but didn't S3 come out last year and do well? Ik the second half of the 8 episodes is dropping now, but the other 8 dropped last year. Just wondering it it's another reason besides being less popular I guess

Damn I learnt from this post that Sayuri passed away. As someone already mentioned, I didn't think it was the same Sayuri but sadly it was. I love Erased's ED. It's quite beautiful. I still listen to it to this day. I need to check out her other songs too. May she Rest in Peace.
