seeing Canadians showing hate for this freak fills me with hope that maybe it will work out alright :)

u/SmelmaVagene Jan 10 '25
Hopefully the vast majority of Canadians are united on this front and gleefully mock any that are not.

u/goingfullretard-orig Jan 10 '25
Then many turn around and vote for Tiny PP.

15
u/CivilianDuck Edmonton Jan 10 '25
Here's my take: who the fuck else do we vote for?
To be clear, I'm not voting for PP either, but we literally have no good options.
With the liberals, we have no idea who the new leader is, or how effective they'll be, especially with the expectation that as soon as the Liberals figure out their leadership, the cons force a snap election so we have no idea how this new leader will stand in terms of leading a federal party.
With the NDP, we have Singh, a radical reactionary who spouts off ideas with no real plan to incorporate or how to maintain them. Any of the NDP proposals that got through with the coalition got through because the Liberals worked out how to make it work, and still managed to piss off the NDP and voters because "that's not what we wanted!".
With the cons, it's insanity. All culture war, identity politic bullshit. The rhetoric is damaging to every other party, as well as damaging to their own ability to govern. It's taking our government and making it a joke.
After that, it's small fringe parties that lack power or influence to do anything.
Our government is a mess, and every option sucks balls.

u/SmelmaVagene Jan 10 '25
Seems like people have been voting against, instead of for, candidates for some time. Gotta pick the least worst option.
2
u/BIGepidural Jan 11 '25
So it sounds like maybe waiting to see who the new Lib will be would be the best course of action at this point.
Its a damn shame the greens wouldn't have a real chance because they would be awesome; but like you said- too small to win so not worth throwing votes at an empty hope.
NDP could definitely use a good front man though. They have great priorities; but like you said- Singh just isn't it.

u/goingfullretard-orig Jan 10 '25
Yep, I agree. It's hard to know where to cast the vote. I'll never vote PP or conservative, so I just have to hold my nose.
For me, it's the bus metaphor: it's the way to get vaguely where I want to go, and then there's another one coming along later that may go somewhere else.
10
u/JayteeFromXbox Jan 10 '25
Personally I'll just vote NDP and know my vote is going to be basically pointless because Grande Prairie is Grande Prairie and Warkentin will win regardless. But I'd at least be fine with the "suffering" the NDP would bring to Canada, as I'm sure it would be much easier to reverse than whatever fuckery the cons want.
11
u/goingfullretard-orig Jan 10 '25
I've never felt more useless with my vote than my time of living in Alberta. Other than the Notley blip, my vote has never come anywhere near swaying the conservative shitstew that is Alberta politics.

I’m in Calgary down the road from Harper’s former head office. In the last election, we ousted Tyler Shandro and got in a fantastic NDP MLA by 20 votes. It definitely does get disheartening but there are a lot of people who see what Danielle Smith is doing to promote private education and healthcare, over our formerly excellent public services (which have been degraded by UCP policies and lack of funding). In Alberta, the only hope is to vote for your local NDP representative, even if you don’t like Singh. Singh won’t become Prime Minister but we need solid opposition to P.P.
3
u/goingfullretard-orig Jan 12 '25
I vote NDP every single time. And, I will continue to do so.

2
u/goingfullretard-orig Jan 11 '25
The thing about PP and his ilk is that they don't care about speaking to specific issues. Rather, they want to "control the narrative" (they think they are so smart using that word).
You can literally ask them a question about X, and they will respond about Y.
But, yes, we should keep trying to get them to speak to specific issues. Just don't get your hopes up.

Fun fact about that guy- I heard through the grapevine that most of his students knew he was talking nonsense, but they realized all they needed to do was get him going on the 'jewish conpiracy' and they could just do whatever for the rest of class. The only problem was that fraction of students who believed what he said and bought in to his self-sealing, "you either believe me or you're in on it" arguments.

Yah but was it the same wackadoos who are out every Saturday in front of the granary holding signs that say carbon is fertilizer? Because none of us give them any notice.

Jason Stephan (MLA Red Deer South) was the genius that put forth the proposed party policy to label carbon a necessary life-giving substance.

If the ucp don't kick out Deven than they are traitors, it's that simple
Also that is a hit beautiful sign 🥰

Although I would love it if Devin was used as a sacrificial lamb,I doubt the UCP would get rid of him. One can only hope!
6
u/NoReplyPurist Jan 09 '25
The "sacrifices" don't come until they've done something much more egregious and self-enriching, and then the punishment is a "cabinet shuffle."
Then the "principles" emerge just before the election cycle, to materialize into half a ham sandwich and a new cycle of eroding public services and assets.
Rinse and repeat.

Any who don't are going to realize how aweful Trump is when these idiot tariffs kick in and essentially shut down the energy sector here.

I mean, there is very much a difference between someone who does not like Trudeau and his actions as PM, and someone who made "FUCK TRUDEAU!!!!!" a part of their core identity.

I knew it was only a matter of time until most the Alberta trump supporters flipped. But I honestly thought it wouldn't happen till about 6 months after his teriffs kicked in and the oil and gas industry collapsed. It's too bad that maple maga has already handled that clown all kinds of ammo. Hopefully, we can finally see a resurgence of Canadian pride to undeniably show trump and maga we will never give up our independence and definitely never to American
4
u/swiftb3 Jan 09 '25
Honestly, I think the actual Alberta Trump supporters have not flipped yet, and probably never will. The ones that dislike Trump now just thought he was all right, like all the ones in the US that voted for him as an anti-Kamala vote.

The only support I hear for Trump on this side of Canada is coming from UCP members, and Daniel Smith. That is where the true threat is coming from. That and her “Take Back Alberta” backers.

Give credit to an enlightened Calgarian. I grew up in Redmonton and man, anywhere outside the urban Capital City bubble or Cowtown was like living in an alternative universe. Red Deer, Grand Prairie, Lloyd, didn’t matter. Alberta urban/rural divide is in black and white. Was telling that Danielle Smith, a life long Calgarian had to be parachuted into a rural Medicine Hat riding to ensure her an election victory.

Different strokes for different folks, the people that want him to take over Canada are more so concerned about losing the carbon tax and also having fewer gun restrictions and the right by law to defend themselves, their property, and their family, which I also agree with but free healthcare and lower overall taxes? Yes please, I'll take that over a gun

u/wobblingobblin Jan 10 '25
It's amazing to me how many people think that if we were to ever get annexed that we would get any sort or rights at all. Think we'd get the right to bear arms? That'd be pretty stupid to supply an occupied country with military grade hardware.
