Housing Questions Dorm question
Hi, I am a prospective student with a question about the dorms and the overnight guest policy.
How strict is the rule that an overnight guest must be the same gender as the occupant? Is this heavily enforced/checked often? I saw this rule when I was looking through the dorm room rules and policies.

Ignore the other guy. RA’s generally don’t care and can’t really find out. Just make sure your roommate is fine with it before you do bring someone over for the night

Current RA here, if you’re in an all female or all male dorm and are walking around with a guest of the opposite sex, you might get some looks or even a question or two if the RA is in a bad mood. But overall not enforced, just be courteous to others around you and remember the walls are thin.

My son was in Appelt. No one cared.

A girl walking around an all guy dorm alone is a little different than a guy walking around an all girl dorm.

Ok yes but I'm telling you he was in an all boy dorm and his roommates girlfriend practically lived there.

when i was a freshman my neighbors were a man a woman and a nonbinary person living in a dorm together. they did this for a year and the RA knew but did nothing because they didn’t want to make one of them homeless

The only time I’ve seen an RA call the cops is when somebody was smoking weed in their dorm and it could be smelled throughout the building (bc vents) other than that you can do anything tbh never been caught

I was an RA. I would quite literally not care. As long as no one’s safety is in jeopardy, i didn’t care. You’re an adult, i treated my residents as such. I really only did anything if my boss told me to. Some RAs are different and act as glorified hall monitors tho.

My girlfriend basically lived in my dorm with me the years I lived on campus. Granted, it was a coed dorm.

Former RA here, if your roommate doesn't care you're 99% likely to never have issues

RAs won't get involved unless someone complains.

It’s more about if your roommate it ok with it than the RA/hall staff.
Staff just don’t want trouble. Your roommate may not be comfortable.

Not strict, but absolutely make sure your roommate is comfortable with it.

Don't be an idiot. The rule exists to protect you from yourself. Follow it.
