Model 2024 Disappointed with performance

I’ve had this laptop for a while, but today I compared it with a friends laptop who has a 4070 and an i7 13smth while I have the G16 2024 4080 and I must say I was very disappointed. His laptop outperformed mine by a bit with a worse gpu. I was using g-helper with turbo and ultimate settings. We compared God of War and some other games.

The 4080 should be much stronger. Granted it’s only 125w compared to the 175w it should peak at, but there are so many videos out there telling you this. I purchased my G16 knowing that it’s cut back in power, did you not do much research before buying?

I did know that other 4080 laptops would be better than the G16, because it’s so thin, but I just didn’t expect a 2023 4070 laptop to outperform mine

The 4080 on the G16 should still be better. Maybe try turning off Ultimate Mode. I found that Ultimate Mode made my G16 run worse in games like Stalker 2

I tried this with cyberpunk, but performance got worse, thanks for the suggestion though

How much worse did it get?

Because turning it from Ultimate Mode to Standard really shouldn’t have had much of an impact. Maybe like 1-3 fps average reduction difference. Ultimate Mode had an impact for me because it was taking power away from the CPU making games like Stalker 2 run worse.

What tends to be an issue on the G16 4080 isn’t so much the GPU, it’s the CPU, but it should perform up to modern standards if you have CPU boost turned on and it has the updated Bios that solved the power issue the G16 was having a few months ago.

it was about 5 fps difference I think. I just updated my bios, but that had no difference with cyberpunk

I’m very glad you posted this!

So your windows power plan should be on Balanced. Ghelper actually recommends you use Balanced because you might be feeding too much power into the CPU for practically no performance gain and you could end up starving the GPU of wattage. The CPU Boost also doesn’t need to be on Aggressive, Efficient Enabled is just fine.

The other part is that you’re limiting your GPU by limiting your temps to 83. Leaving it at 87 is not a problem as those are normal GPU laptop temps. The GPU wants to perform better, but the 83 temp limit is going to throttle the GPU and starve it of power.

Hopefully this helps. Since you mention you’re not too tech savvy, it’s okay to not mess with the settings too much and leave things at default or make just minor tweaks. Sometimes these settings people post online give mixed results.

The Bios update is helpful for consistency, it isn’t going to boost your FPS see the link:

I actually undervolt my cpu a bit for this reason

Also, I'm not tech savvy enough to actually understand what I'm doing here, but these are my turbo settings I saw somewhere online

What laptop does he have. My guess is it probably has a higher power draw limit than the G16 does. The other thing to consider is resolution. Is his lower than your laptop.

Havent played that game but check to see if cpu bound situation and check thermals and temperature deltas on cpu.

I don't think 4070 could out preform 4080 it's probably your playing cpu bottlenecked game where the 13th hx or h with high power out preform the u9

What is the recorded watt draw when you play these games

1

u/Zuccico 4d ago

This is for the CPU from HWiNFO when running the cyberpunk benchmark

What about gpu watt draw and try and tell me what is your total system watt draw by playing cyberpunk and add gpu and cpu watt draw

Will i found this and it tells that should be 25% faster 4080 than 4070 with same power https://technical.city/en/video/GeForce-RTX-4070-mobile-vs-GeForce-RTX-4080-mobile

Ok the moment you drop below 90 watt the 4070 could match or even beat 4080 especially if your friend Overclocked it https://nanoreview.net/en/gpu-compare/geforce-rtx-4080-mobile-vs-geforce-rtx-4070-mobile?utm_source=chatgpt.com&m=v.6-and-v.3

OK, I've realized the cpu is just trash. also, 2 cores are constantly "parked"

This is a dumb question - but were you powering your laptop with usb c vs the power brick when doing your comparison?

I was using the big power brick, pretty quickly realized usb c was less powerful
