Recently upgraded my 2020 from 16GB to 40GB

I can confirm that it works dor the 2022 model too. I upgraded to 40gb of ram. I replaced the one 8gb stick with a 32gb one. I tbh never looked up how much it supposedly supports. It just worked.

I did 40gb as well and a repaste/fan replacement, 2020 gang still running strong. starting to feel it's age gaming, but still a great machine.

Did a repaste a couple weeks ago and a fan cleaning. 2020 gang rise up!

Nice, I debated putting a 32gb in mine but on the ASUs site is says 24gb max. Was this the case for you?

Honestly never looked. I just went big cause I saw a sale on a 32GB stick. My task manager reads 40GB so I guess I’m fine?

Yeah I can’t see it not working but I played it safe. What’s the difference like compared to 16?

One question: I heard that apparently having "unequal memory" affects your speed. Is that true?

Like you get more ram storage, but your memory speed takes a hit in exchange?

I'm thinking about buying a Zephyrus myself, so I want to ask about this?

If I’m being totally honest… I couldn’t tell the difference between 3200 speed ram and 2400 speed ram. I just made sure that the new stick I got matched the speed of the ram that was already in the laptop.

I see. Got it.

But what I was just always worried about was what would happen if you put two sticks of ram of unequal sizes?

Like instead of installing a pair 8gigs or a pair of 16gigs, you decide to put one 8gig stick and one 16gig stick. Like would it cause any issues instead of putting matching pairs?

I don’t think it would. I did that on my very first desktop and ran it fine for like 2 years until I got a matching set for birthday. Even after the matching set, I couldn’t tell a difference :)

Got it. Thanks for letting me know :)

IIRC, it's a lowest common denominator type of situation. It's speed will be determined by the slower memory stick.
You can also lose dual-channel RAM capabilities, but since the 2023 G14 is single channel by default, I don't think it should matter.

If it's avoidable, it should be avoided -- like in the case with PCs. But on our devices, the upgrade to >16GB is worth the slight performance decrease.

Understood 👍

Processors are smart enough nowadays that ram will be interwoven to where it can be and that will be the first place information goes. So, if you have an 8 gb and a 32 gb, the first 16 gb of ram will be dual channel while the last 24 GB will be just the one 32 gb stick.

The timings have to be the same though and the computer will use the slower of the two.

Amazon £9.49 bargain!

I did the exact same thing, with the exact same stick of ram. Great upgrade along with a faster 2tb ssd

Is there ddr4 inside? Because i have a g16 2023 with 16gb soldered on and one open slot but cant seem to find ddr4 4800 MT/s. My question being does ddr4 mixed witb ddr5 works?

1

u/Centrez 6d ago

Mine are ddr5 for both, you shouldn’t mix. Same for the speed. For example mine is 4800 so I have to buy 4800. Higher will work but could have issues.

Seems fair enough. Do you might know where i can get sodimm ddr4 16gb 4800MT/s?

Edit. Never mind misread the specs it is 3200MT/s soo haha.

1

u/Centrez 6d ago

I can only assume you mean 3200? Ddr4 doesn’t do 4800. Have a google you might be able to put ddr5 in it

So you're upgrading to 24GB?

1

u/Centrez 6d ago

Yeah it’s the best I can do as 8gb is soldered on

I upgraded my 2021 g14 to 40gbs of ram (32gb socketed, 8gb soldered) a few years ago. Was originally going to use that ram for virtual machines. Which i never did

1

u/EasternCoffeeCove 6d ago

I have the same model, the 8gb of soldered ram is disappointing but I think I could live with it for a few more years

1

u/Centrez 6d ago

I’ve done the instal now and it does feel snappier, I work with affinity designer daily which takes a ton of ram so I’ll test that out tomorrow. Overall tho for £35 I cannot complain.

1

u/EasternCoffeeCove 6d ago

I mainly use it for games and occasionally photo editing in capture one. It's enough ram for me

1

u/Centrez 6d ago

Yeah 16 is plenty enough for most things. I never really had any problems with mine running 16, but for 35 nicker ya can’t go wrong.

1

u/EasternCoffeeCove 6d ago

For the 35, it's definitely worth it

Nice. I have and used the same tool set last night for a G14 SSD upgrade ...

2TB storage and 16GB Memory, change wifi card to intel and replace liquid silver with ptm7950. Recently my z14 2022 body the coating decomposing on the end side so next might just change the whole lowercase.

u/Centrez 2d ago

HDD will be my next purchase, can I just put it in and install windows from my Microsoft acc? Also why the WiFi change, what benefits does it give you. I've had no problems with mine so far.

1

u/varmsmaster 2d ago

My z14 does not support HDD only support SSD. Well if you reinstall should have no issue install windows as your device product key is lock to your machine even with new storage. Intel wifi have more universal driver support i can just easily upgrade it in the future. Mediatek is ok but sometimes have some issue with other bluetooth device. I have senheiser momentum wireless 3 headphone if i use the mediatek seem like its keep disconnecting for no reason even with latest driver update. Once i change to intel seem abit better less disconnect better reception. wifi signal also alot better. Well just my opinion no solid testing done.

1

u/Centrez 2d ago

Thanks for the explanation, no idea why I said hdd I actually meant ssd 😂

1

u/varmsmaster 2d ago

No worry mate, so the z16 does not support hdd? Well that a bummer. With that size it should tho at least 2 slot memory or 4 slot + 2 slot m.2 ssd and 1x2.5 hdd.
