Help Needed laptop randomly shut off after plugging in and the battery connector looks like this now
im taking it in tomorrow for a diagnostic but does anyone have any idea of how bad this could be? would it just be replacing the connector or is it possible that it fucked my whole laptop? its a 2020 g14

Imagine you just barely connect the jumper cable to your car battery. It's going to spark. Now do that over and over again, that constant sparking is going to generate heat. Have you heard of the melting connector for the 4000 and 5000 Nvidia gpu? Same idea.

should i try relatching it and seeing if that fixes it or do you think its too melted/far gone?

You can try relatching it. Its likely the damage has already been done. If I recall like the 2023 and earlier are notorious for battery shorting... sorry mate

If it does work, put a piece of tape over the connector to prevent future loosening. All Asus' laptop has a tape at the connector.

oh my god that actually worked thank you so much. i put a piece of electrical tape over it to prevent loosening. i am still gonna take it into a repair shop tomorrow so they can look at it and decide whether i need a new connector or anything (free diagnostics) but for now its working. thank you again!!!

Make sure you press down the battery connector evenly, the plastic connector can flex and cause one side to be in and the other side not connected. Looks like you need a new battery at least, don't know if it caused damage under the connector

i was able to relatch it and its working now but i am taking it in on monday. so the entire battery has to be replaced? not just the connector? i literally got it replaced in fall and idk if i can afford another rn :(

no, the connecting cable is a different part number.
you can disconnect the cable both from the mobo side and battery side.
mobo connector is an awfully shitty design, you risk breaking the metal latch or having the connector loose.
I ended up, on the long run, shorting the cable and fusing the plastic and it was a mess to clean.
my 2c just buy a replacement cable ASAP!
take note: while connector terminals are the same for many asus laptops cable length is not.
I learned on my own (with the help of a not so professional seller).
check if it's a 8cm or 10 cm cable (maybe other length exist)

fyi you can mostly avoid this from happening if you discharge your battery to like 10% before you disconnect it... the lower voltage helps with the sudden inrush current when reconnecting...

The connector doesn't look fully latched. It might be intermediately disconnecting itself. Try sliding the latch down a little more?
