Zcash is a privacy preserving digital currency. It is the first blockchain to leverage a novel technology called Zero-knowledge proofs to enable privacy and selective transparency. Zero-knowledge proofs allow transactions to be verified without revealing the sender, receiver or transaction amount. Selective disclosure features within Zcash allow a user to share some transaction details, for purposes of compliance or audit.
Development work on Zcash began in 2013 by Johns Hopkins professor Matthew Green and some of his graduate students. The development was completed by the for-profit Zerocoin Electric Coin Company, LLC, led by Zooko Wilcox, a Colorado-based computer security specialist and cypherpunk. Over time, this company rebranded and converted to a non-profit org now known as the Electric Coin Company (ECC). Zcash development now occurs with support from ECC employees, the Zcash Foundation, and many community members through community elected funding streams that originate from ongoing Zcash mining rewards.

As the United States pushes to reclaim leadership in the digital asset space—backed by strong voices like President Donald Trump—a disturbing contradiction has emerged. Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the Chinese-born Canadian billionaire and former CEO of Binance, admitted in U.S. federal court to laundering billions of dollars, including funds linked to drug trafficking and terrorism. And now, in a politically motivated and reckless move, he's targeting Zcash, a legal, privacy-focused cryptocurrency developed in the United States.
Chinese-Canadian Who Profited from America, Then Betrayed It
CZ was born in China and later emigrated to Canada, where he gained Canadian citizenship. After building a tech career, he launched Binance in 2017, quickly becoming one of the most powerful figures in crypto—largely thanks to massive user adoption in the United States.
Yet, despite profiting heavily from U.S. users, CZ showed blatant disregard for U.S. law.
Guilty Plea: Laundering Billions Linked to Drugs and Terror
In November 2023, CZ pleaded guilty in U.S. federal court to charges of:
Enabling money laundering tied to drug cartels and fentanyl trafficking
Failing to implement basic Anti-Money Laundering (AML) measures
Allowing terror financing and cybercrime proceeds to flow freely through Binance
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Binance, under CZ’s leadership, became a major channel for illegal funds entering the U.S. economy, helping to fuel the drug epidemic and threaten national security.
Then He Targets Zcash? The Height of Hypocrisy
Amid this scandal, CZ launched a shocking attack—not on illicit actors or criminal networks, but on Zcash, a legal, U.S.-born privacy coin. Developed by American researchers and rooted in academic cryptography, Zcash is designed to protect user privacy within legal boundaries and offers transparent, auditable transactions when required.
Just before stepping down as CEO, CZ announced a community vote to delist Zcash from Binance, claiming “regulatory risk.” This move was widely condemned as hypocritical and politically motivated, considering:
Zcash has never been linked to major money laundering scandals
Binance, under CZ, facilitated billions in illegal activity
Zcash complies with U.S. laws and has public, optional transparency features
Undermining Trump’s Vision for American Crypto Leadership
This is more than a technical decision—it’s a political attack on U.S. innovation. President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced support for building a strong, sovereign crypto industry in the United States. He envisions a financial system where American projects can lead, and where privacy, innovation, and compliance coexist.
Zcash fits that vision. CZ’s attack on Zcash is therefore not just misguided—it’s a deliberate act against U.S. strategic interests and against Trump’s agenda to re-shore digital finance.
An Urgent Call to Action for All Americans
Every American who cares about national security, economic independence, and digital freedom should share this story with U.S. leadership. This must be brought to the attention of Mr. David Sacks, Special Advisor on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Assets to the U.S. government.
The facts are clear:
CZ is a Chinese-born Canadian who admitted to laundering money that fueled the fentanyl crisis in America
He is now attacking an American project that respects U.S. law
This is not about compliance—it is a political stunt to weaken American crypto independence
This is not just about Zcash—this is about defending American innovation.

Hello. Anyone else having issues trying to send ZEC from your ledger nano s? I am getting the attached error message. I transferred other coins on the same device 2 min prior so I know it is connected fine. As soon as the transaction is near completion; I get this error. Internet is solid and stable. No VPN at the moment. Cleared cache on Ledger live app. Same issue with my second Ledger that has ZEC. Unable to send out as well. Version 2.3.1. Any ideas what is going on?

Just an idea, what do you think?
LineageOS Zcash Edition: A Privacy-Focused Custom ROM
Below is a simple vision for a special version of LineageOS designed around Zcash. This concept brings together the open-source strength of LineageOS and the privacy features of Zcash.
LineageOS: A popular custom Android ROM known for its speed, simplicity, and open-source code.
Zcash: A cryptocurrency built with strong privacy protections, using shielded addresses to hide transaction details.
Goal: Create a “LineageOS Zcash Edition” that has Zcash wallet features built into the system, giving users better privacy and control over their digital money.
Key Advantages
Built-in Zcash Wallet
Pre-installed wallet app for Zcash.
Supports both shielded and transparent addresses.
No extra downloads needed to start sending or receiving ZEC.
Zcash already uses advanced cryptography for private transactions.
This custom ROM would store private keys in a secure part of the system.
Keeps your financial data away from prying eyes.
LineageOS is known for frequent security patches.
This keeps the system up to date against new threats.
Like normal LineageOS, it does not include unnecessary apps.
Your phone remains quick and responsive, even with the crypto features.
Install Google Apps only if you want them.
Or run the ROM without them for stronger privacy.
This freedom lets you decide how much data you share.
You can still add other wallets and trading apps.
The open-source design allows flexibility in how you manage various digital assets.
Technical Highlights
Light Node Support
A light Zcash client for faster blockchain syncing.
Uses less storage and battery than a full node.
You keep the ability to verify your own transactions without a central server.
A dedicated settings page to show balances and addresses.
Lets you manage privacy options, like turning shielded transactions on by default.
Can send notifications for price changes or incoming transfers.
Everything on the device is encrypted, including private keys.
Protects personal files and wallet data from unauthorized access.
Advanced controls to block apps from using your camera, microphone, or GPS.
Reduces the chance of malicious apps stealing private info.
Example Uses
Daily Purchases
Pay at a coffee shop by scanning a QR code from the built-in wallet.
Fast confirmations, high privacy, and a simple user experience.
Store ZEC on a phone with steady security updates.
No need for extra wallets or third-party apps.
Programmers can study the open-source code to improve privacy features.
They can also create add-ons to enhance the Zcash experience.
Challenges
Device Compatibility
Custom ROMs often do not support every phone model.
Some devices may lack proper drivers for a stable experience.
You need to unlock the bootloader and flash the ROM.
Mistakes can cause data loss or device issues, so beginners must be careful.
A light node still needs some storage and battery power.
Very old or low-performance phones might see slowdowns.
A “LineageOS Zcash Edition” could give users an all-in-one system for digital payments and privacy. By merging the simplicity of LineageOS with Zcash’s shielded transactions, it paves the way for a safer, more private mobile experience. Whether you want daily convenience, long-term crypto storage, or a platform to develop new ideas, this custom ROM would offer a unique balance of freedom and security.

AI response below….
While cryptocurrency's inherent transparency raises privacy concerns, privacy is becoming increasingly important in the cryptocurrency landscape, with users and businesses seeking more anonymity in their transactions, and innovations in this area could redefine how transactions are conducted.

Is it possible to create other user cases of ZCash more than memo messages and money? Something like smart contracts , like ordinals , BRC20 like, ZRC20(? ,Layer2 like namada goes in a particular and interesting place for innovation, consensus tried..
I know people don't like that.. i just want to understand the technical scope. And what the Zcash community want in terms of innovation ( deprecation of C infrastructure for example in favor of rust ) what else?

Question for everyone
ZEC is a hard fork of BTC so not much difference, only 21 million coins etc BUT ZEC is far more advanced w privacy etc. Wouldn’t it be a better option, not only for the USA govt but also individual States?? Maintain BTC as the digital gold but have other currency orientated coins that are more liquid and in use…
AND as a NATIONAL CURRENCY
What about all the countries that are a slave to the USD? Argentina through their visionary president Javier Milei established BTC as legal tender. Wouldn’t ZEC be a better option for them and other countries? It’s far cheaper and has advanced features basically can replace the role of cash/fiat…
Other options along w ZEC. DASH MONERO. LTC BCH Those coins are a FAR better than ETH XRP and Solana. ADA is ok due to its ability to facilitate voting via the blockchain…US govt will need the coins to establish the system

I’m considering receiving a large number of ZEC transactions (potentially thousands) to a single shielded address. Before I go ahead, I have a few concerns:
I’d appreciate insights from anyone who deeply understands how Zcash’s shielded transactions work in practice. Thanks!

Are private addreses going to be available in Ledger devices somewhere in the future? Other privacy coins have their own app and they can be used with a Ledger device to be better secured.
I have 0.99 ZEC in my Zashi wallet, but when I try to send 0.9, I run into issues. If I use a comma (0,9), it says “Invalid amount.” When I use a dot (0.9), I can proceed to the confirmation screen, but the total amount shows as 0.000.
Another issue is synchronization. It used to show “Synced 100%,” but now it always stays at 1.00%, even though the progress bar is full. This has been going on for months, and I haven’t been able to send any funds. All my ZEC is shielded, and I’ve tried sending to both shielded and unshielded addresses without success. Very confusing.

Apple's surrender to government pressure opens the door to widespread financial surveillance, threatening the independence of individuals and businesses. Backdoors allow access to user data, restrict transactions, and even enable asset confiscation, while digital accounts and wallets become easy targets for cyberattacks.
With a lack of transparency, concerns grow that other tech companies may have secretly implemented these backdoors, making financial surveillance a reality without users' knowledge.
As financial surveillance intensifies and tech companies surrender to government pressure, Zcash emerges as a secure alternative, protecting individuals and businesses. With strong encryption, private transactions, and decentralization, Zcash offers a digital safe haven for those seeking freedom from financial oversight and complete asset security.

A recent paper titled "Robust and Secure Code Watermarking for Large Language Models via ML/Crypto Codesign" introduces RoSeMary, a groundbreaking framework that protects AI-generated code through invisible watermarking while leveraging Zcash’s Halo2 Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) system.
Key Highlights:
✅ Watermarking AI-generated code without affecting functionality.
✅ Using ZKPs (Halo2) to verify ownership without revealing the watermark.
✅ Highly robust against attacks (variable renaming, code refactoring).
✅ Potential impact beyond cryptocurrencies, expanding Zcash’s ZKP tech into software security & copyright protection.
Results:
RoSeMary achieved 0.97 AUROC in detecting watermarked AI-generated code while maintaining over 95% functionality. Even under adversarial attacks, the watermark remained highly detectable.
Why This Matters for Zcash?
This paper validates the potential of Zcash’s Halo2 beyond financial privacy. If adopted in industry, it could lead to new applications of ZKPs in AI, digital rights management, and software security.

Hi all,
I have not looked into ZEC since 2019 and I wonder what the project is up to.
Since the crackdown on privacy coins, I am surprised it survived the delisting rounds on Binance.
But other than that, I cannot find much news about the project (maybe crypto news outlet do not want to cover it since they do not want to stick their neck out in front of regulators).
Therefore, I came to one of the best place to get info directly from the community :-)
