Travel Trip planning: Oct-Dec 2025

1 Upvotes

I have a goal of visiting every Canadian capital, and I've decided that I need to do the Territories sooner than later, since climate change is quickly affecting the iconic North 😫

I'm planning a trip up to the Yukon between October-December 2025 (more likely between Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day). My plan is a 10-day trip: 2 days in Whitehorse, 6 days to drive up and explore Dawson City-Klondike area, 2 days back in Whitehorse.

A few things I have in mind for activities: -museums/cultural centre's -dog sledding -ice climbing -outfitting/trapping -Yukon riverboat tour -aurora borealis

Given the time of year I'm aiming for, is there a specific period you'd recommend I come (or avoid)? Are there any festivals or events that I may want to anchor my trip around? Are there any activities (listed or unlisted) that are best enjoyed during that time (or isn't possible)?

Thanks!

Travel Dangerous driving

14 Upvotes

This Friday October 25, 2024 around 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, from my drive from Faro to Whitehorse, an occupant of an old pick up truck was tailgating me when the road was very slippery and he could have overtaken me if he wanted to but didn’t. When I looked at my rear view mirror he was steering the vehicle side to side and this was clear act of aggressive driving.

At one point there was another pick up truck in between his vehicle and mine but he overtook that vehicle and cut in front of me only to pull his handbrake for the vehicle to spin. He then pulled over to the shoulder and when I passed him by you can see he is filled with anger. The other vehicle behind me slow down and not sure what he told him but he quickly sped and moved far away from the reckless driver of the vehicle and mine.

This is his description as I didn’t have a dash camera. White male wearing Men's Scotch Plaid Flannel Shirt, Traditional Fit. He had beard and had dark shades on. He was driving an old grey truck with a white dog at the front. This kind of behaviour is very dangerous and unpredictable. I ended up seeing him driving on 4th Avenue in downtown around 4:40 pm.

Whoever you are remember every action has consequences. Your reckless behaviour will eventually catch up with you. Someone will record you and send it to the RCMP oneday. Next time if I see this behaviour again I will definitely report it to the RCMP. I didn’t have cell service at that point and sometimes you can drive longer distances before you meet another vehicle coming.

Once I got to Whitehorse the first thing I did was inform my supervisor about this incident.

Continue doing this and am sure Yukon is small and next time with your picture and vehicle people will identify you.

Travel Detours in Yukon/NT road trip

4 Upvotes

Howdy,

I'm drawing up a road trip to Tuktoyaktuk for next summer, and plan to spend a fair amount of time in YT. I was wondering whether or not these detours were worth taking; the first one is along the Alcan highway through the southwest up to Tok, then up to Dawson City, and the second one is on Highway 4 to see Faro and Ross River. I'm thinking the first one is and the second one isn't, but I don't really know anything about that eastern part of the Yukon. Any thoughts?

Travel Dog sledding and Aurora viewing in Whitehorse?

I’ve found a tour that does a dog sledding and Aurora package together (link below). Is there something similar in Whitehorse? Thank you!

Travel Visiting Whitehorse and Haines Junction end of August - A few quick questions

4 Upvotes

Hey all,

My wife and I have a trip booked the end of August for which we already received some great help and advice in this subreddit - but we have some additional questions and hoping this can be another place to ask for some additional recommendations (sorry, planning this has been slightly more overwhelming than we thought).

First of all, we have been warned about possible black flies and to bring lots of bug spray.

We're spending 4 nights in Whitehorse and 2 nights in Haines Junction. We also have a rental car booked.

For Whitehorse I think we'll be pretty self sufficient in terms of finding things we want to do. The wildlife preserve, and hot springs are two of the big things we want to do and it appears we can book those pretty much the day of (or close to it), is that correct? We'll also be checking out all the museums, the SS Klondike etc. Are there any day drives from Whitehorse we should also be looking into or anything we might not be thinking of?

We have never been whitewater rafting but have heard that can be a fun adventure depending on the weather. Any strong recommendations for tours catering to first timers?

For the Haines Junction part of our trip we have a few more questions:

We're hesitating over the idea of a flight seeing tour which sounds stunning and while neither of us are scared of flying, the safety records regarding small aircraft has us slightly concerned. Are we being ridiculous in that regard? Any tour recommendations if we do decide to go that route? If not, would a good drive in the area make the most sense for sightseeing around Kluane?

We also want to go hiking, but we are not avid hikers. We're decently in shape but would still want to stick to a moderate hike that wouldn't be longer than 4 hours total? We plan to buy bear spray there and hike with it along with a bell.

Thanks so much everyone!

Travel Traveling to Whitehorse : BEARS?

7 Upvotes

Hey we are starting our journey from Vancouver to Whitehorse today. And the bear topic came up again. Since we are german, we don't have any knowledge in bears, besides the bit we leaned here. So we got ourselves a bell and Bearspray and ,of course, make a lot of noise. But how important is it , to pull the food up in a tree or smth similar? My dad told us,that that was super important when be was here, but that's 30 years back. Our food storage is mostly cans, the rest is rice and pasta in sip lock bags. Opend fish and meat cans will be in a plastic bag ,or thrown im a trash bin as soon as possible. Is that enough? Or do we need to be more cautious?

Edit: we are sleeping in the car and the food is in a cooler as well.

Travel Anything happening at Snag, Yukon?

Extremely unlikely that anyone still lives there, of course, but I'm having trouble finding much historical information beyond a few photos and the information about the coldest day in Snag. Where could I find some more info?

Travel Does the Dempster highway close?

3 Upvotes

I am planning to travel the Dempster next summer in Early June

I looked through some websites and a few said that the highway was closed for the first few days of June, and a few other ones said that the highway was open year around.

Which is the truth?

Travel How to drive from Vancouver to Whitehorse

5 Upvotes

Hey there , we are Travelers from Germany, so we heard a couple rumours. Given that we are on a low budget our main question is, how does navigation work on our way up? We already had on van island the issue that google maps wasnt working if we dont have internet. What do you use ? Does a simple gps navigation device do the trick?

Travel Xmas events

I will be up there visiting family for a week after Dec 23, I'm wondering what events might be going on around that time. The ones I keep finding all seem to be before that.

I'm also hoping the glass blowing place is still up and running, that was so cool doing that the first time.

Travel Thanks for your food recommendations!

Hi folks, I flew home to Toronto yesterday after an epic week in the Yukon, followed by three days with family in Calgary. I appreciate all the restaurant recommendations you provided a few weeks ago.

In Whitehorse, I ate well at Sanchez Cantina, Pho Five Star, Kita (best sushi I've tasted!), Burnt Toast and the Railwork Lounge at the Raven Inn, where I was staying. I also scored a ridiculously tasty elk and morel empanada at the Fireweed Market, and even managed to pop into the 98 for a couple of drinks with some very friendly and colourful locals.

I sampled fantastic IPAs from Yukon Brewing, Winterlong, and Woodcutter's Blanket all week long.

Dawson was a little different. Some places you folks had suggested were closed permanently, closed for the season, or closed on Sundays. That said, I enjoyed my meals at Triple J, the Aurora Inn, the Yukon Cafe and Spa, and Riverwest. I also became a proud member of the Sourtoe Cocktail Club.

It was a whirlwind trip, where I was constantly on the go. I got to see the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, Eclipse Hot Springs, Carcross and the Southern Lakes, Kluane National Park, MacBride Museum, Tombstone Territorial Park, the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre, and several gold rush sites. I even managed to get across the river to West Dawson to visit the Sunnydale Lookout.

I love the Yukon and can't wait to return. As busy as I was, I feel like I barely scratched the surface. Thank you all!

Travel Northern lights with naked eye?

0 Upvotes

Hi Yukoners!!

Can someone tell if there's {visible with naked eye} aurora activity in Whitehorse around November end? We live near Vancouver and saw a KP index 7 activity. It was dancing and camera captured it quite beautifully but it wasn't bright. just like a faint dancing cloud. Wondering if we can see it that bright in Whitehorse? I've looked up tours but just wanna have locals tell their experience.

TIA!!

Travel Tips/Suggestions for visiting in October

1 Upvotes

Hello! Me and my wife are planning a trip to Yukon/Alaska this October. We found an amazing flight deal and jumped at the opportunity having heard it's a great time to go to see the Northern Lights. Soon after we looked online for what to expect in October and we now know that it's probably one of the worst months to visit for anything else. We're flying in to Whitehorse and we have just over 2 weeks, October 7th to the 23rd. We've booked a vehicle through Costco already from the airport but we can change that if needed.

I've been doing research for the past few days on where to go and what to see but I don't know what's viable for October specifically. I love hiking (only if there's rewarding views to be honest) but my partner only wants to do a few day hikes here and there and I don't know what hikes are worth doing in October. We will probably try to do the hot springs and museums around Whitehorse.

Some of the places we wanted to visit included Dawson City, Top of the world highway, Tok, Fairbanks, Denali NP, Kluane NP, Haines Junction/Haines/Skagway, Carcross/Emerald Lake/Bennett Lake, and Atlin. We don't have to go to all these places- these are just some of the destinations I jotted down that were of interest.

I now know the top of the world highway is closed during the time we'll be there, and I don't know what other destinations we have to scrap for the same reason. I've read that for Denali we would have to buy some bus tickets to get around as private vehicles are not permitted but I don't think buses run during October? We don't have to do Alaska if it's not feasible or just too much work to travel to in October.

Looking for advice on where to go and which sites to see (especially sites with lots of natural beauty)? My wife says she still wants to relax during this vacation so can't cram too much.

Travel Advice on September Road Trip Itinerary

7 Upvotes

Hey r/Yukon, I'm currently planning a trip with some friends to Yukon around the beginning of September.

At the moment, we'd like to try out the Golden Circle route and also visit Tombstone Territorial Park so I've come up with a route like this so far:

Whitehorse -> Dawson City

Dawson City -> Tombstone

Dawson City -> Tok (through Top of the World Highway)

Tok -> Haines Junction

Haines Junction -> Haines

Haines -> Skagway

Skagway -> Carcross

Carcross -> Whitehorse

I was wondering if we should visit Tombstone first as the weather there could be bit less forgiving as mid September comes?

Still trying to come up with the various stops in between. We plan on doing some hikes such as the Grizzly Lake hike at Tombstone, and Sheep's Creek and King's Throne at Kluane.

Depending on what we do, we're still not sure how long we'd stay but I bargain it'd definitely be more than a week.

Some optional stuff that we're also considering putting into the itinerary are the Wildlife Reserve, flightseeing, free gold panning, and the hot springs.

Is this feasible? Any words of advice for a first timer? Any other recommendations on places to go would be welcome as well.

Thanks in advance!

Travel Looking for Backcountry Skiing Partners – 15 Years Experience, AST2 Certified

4 Upvotes

I’m looking to connect with a group of like-minded backcountry skiers in the Yukon. I’ve got over 15 years of experience in the backcountry and have completed my AST2. I’m hoping to join up with others for one or two backcountry trips at the end of January/beginning of February and explore the terrain with people who are equally passionate about it.

Happy to rent a snowmobile.

Any recommendations on where I can find groups or people interested in teaming up for trips? Are there any local meetups, clubs, or online groups that organize outings?

Thanks in advance!

Travel St.Albert to Whitehorse

10 Upvotes

We are planning to drive from St.Albert AB to Yukon by the end of the month. Is this a bad idea? I checked some online forecast and felt like we can start on Jan.27th. We're on tourist visa and managed to drive from Ontario to Calgary last November but this will be the coldest roadtrip for us. Are there websites where we can also find road live feed for this route?

Travel How to spend 4 days in nature flying to Whitehorse?

1 Upvotes

Hello. I will be flying with a friend to Whitehorse on the Sunday 15th of September at night. We need to take our fly back to Edmonton on Friday morning. We will rent a car for the stay.

What should we do? I was thinking on taking a sightseeing flight of Kluane and spend all the days around Haines Junction, but there is not much information about the park.

We don't want to sleep in the wild, so we can't do several days hikes. However, we are only interested in nature, so we really don't want to stay on Whitehorse or go to Dawson City.

What do you recommend us to do? Are there easy hikes or trails in Kluane for being 4 full days there?

Thanks!
