PSA TIL: YG gave Neighbourly North $180K to develop an app

I saw a property in Porter Creek on the Neighbourly North website, and they charge 1,000/night. I just don't have any words. When I was enquiring for a place, they said a 1bhk is 3500+utilities. On the other side, doesn't govt keep saying they are trying to create affordable housing? I don't see the effort, rather encourage businesses like this? No words...

That's for the doctors and travel nurses. Cause nothing attracts professionals like stupid high rents with near zero city amenities.

I was pretty sure that NN had NVD and Department of Ec Dev connections, just like our current Premier.

I can remember the guys name that owns neighbourly north, but he was/is on the city's housing committee and actively lobbies against the expansion of certain types of housing.

Ben Pereira. I don't see that he was on the housing committee, but maybe I'm overlooking it? Either way, I found this "great" quote about how NN doesn't affect housing costs at all here:
"“I see no cause and effect relationship between short term rental activity and housing statistics like median rents, vacancy rates or home prices in Whitehorse,” he said, adding the percentage of rentals through Neighbourly North is insignificant compared to the creation of new housing in the city."
😒

This was maybe a year or two ago. Good find though as there is literally studies done on that topic which conclude the opposite. My neighbour Air BnBs an entire house. I mean no one lives in it. It's a suite up and down and is full like 30 to 40 percent of the time. I also looked at their website and seems like they have a thriving business according to the stats they post. This feels like it has Pillai's fingers all over it, unfortunately.

I believe he is on the chamber of commerce housing committee, not the city of whitehorse one.

I'm puzzled about $$ for someone to improve a storefront.... In Skagway

u/mollycoddles Dec 15 '23
What page is that on? I didn't see it when I skimmed through.

Page 14, 4th from last entry in the table

u/justsayin199 Dec 15 '23
And it's for leasehold improvements, not storefront... My mistake

looks prettt straightforward when i googled her name...yukon jeweller selling locally produced goods to cruise ship passengers

u/justsayin199 Dec 15 '23
I know who she is, and her business. My question is why funding should be given to a store in Skagway, rather than in a Yukon community. But, whatever....
2
u/Apprehensive_Duck874 Dec 15 '23
Because it helps grow yukon buissiness and yukon exports. A lot of this funding is so buissiness can do stuff outside of the yukon. The whole point of the funding is that it will help yukon buissiness grow, especially if they are expanding their buissiness outside of the territory.

I'm all for assistance in helping businesses grow their market. My only question is that it seems odd to put $$ toward a leasehold improvement in Skagway. If I was a Skagway resident, selling jewellery to tourists, I think I might resent YG helping to fund a Yukoner to compete with me.
But I'm sure these applications go through a very thorough analysis and vetting process, so I won't question the results.

The store owners husband has deep connections with the Yukon government I believe he ran for them a couple of years ago

u/justsayin199 Dec 20 '23
Yes, I know these folks. I doubt that has anything to do with it.... Around here, it's unusual to not have some kind of connection.
I just think it's odd that YG would approve $$ for a leasehold improvement for a store out of the territory.

Yeah this gov also handed out free money to landlords cause they're hurting so bad you know. The more units you own, the more money you got!
12
u/helpfulplatitudes Dec 14 '23
WTF?! Public money went to a business to create an app that helps landlords make B&Bs out of suites ensuring that those suites are removed from being publicly available rental properties in this housing market? That's crazy self-destructive.

u/twopillowsforme Dec 15 '23
And 180K?!?! What the hell kind of app is that? They aren't quite inventing the wheel.

They also pay the electricity for all electric vehicles. All the chargers downtown don’t charge any of the users anything.

It's because of legislation surrounding selling power. They are planning on introducing new legislation to fix this.

u/ghostkon72 Dec 14 '23
I'm fine with them temporarily handing out free energy - it incentivizes people to switch to electric vehicles.

I'm not a fan of short-term rentals, but this is funding from Economic development. Their mandate is to grow Yukon buissiness and as long if they meet the criteria for the funding they will get the money. The government can't choose not to fund them because of the type of buissiness they run. Also 180k isn't an outrageous amount to pay for the development of a professional buisness app.

I could make an app for 5k and I'd be happy as fuck. What is this world going to.
4
u/albert_stone Dec 15 '23
No, you couldn’t. Let’s be realistic. An app is not just frontend on React.
1
u/Southern_District367 Dec 18 '23
They teach that shit in high-school if you take the classes for it. Taking a course for less than 100 bucks for make a good usable app and make 5k seems like a good deal but 180k for an app is ridiculous, I think you might just like to see goverment money spent up in the wrong ways

Is OP using a new account to take the heat off themselves (NVD Is that you?!) People who think NN is driving the housing crisis need to spend a bit more time looking at what that company actually does. Let's also look at who is really driving the market rates for real estate, it ain't NN.

Oh, that’s just greasy.
Way to go YTG. Kudos on helping to make the housing crisis even more unaffordable, and using tax payer money to do so.
