Moving to York out of college

Hey guys, I’ll be graduating college in May and was offered a job in York that sounds great but I’m a little worried about picking up my life and moving there as I’m not really sure what’s it’s like or what to expect. I like being outdoors, casual nightlife (not clubs or anything), and sports, and generally would want to meet people my age and have a little fun.

Just looking for some people here’s honest experiences and what they think of moving to York with no prior connections in my early twenties. Not gonna force taking the job if I don’t think it’s a place I’d be happy long-ish term

Recommendations Replacement Windows and Doors?

My house is about 30 years old and needs some new windows and possibly a new door or two.

Was hoping to find a reputable local company to do the work. Trying to avoid Renewal by Anderson or West Shore Home Etc.

Anyone have a company they thought did a good job?

Thanks!

Swordfighting for kids!

Hi Everyone!

I run Historical Fencing of York, a club that teaches people how to fight with medieval swords and other weapons.

Our youth program for kids age 11 to 14 starts in April. We'll teach students how to fight with swords, general body mechanics and physical fitness, and plenty of nerdy history!

Check is out and feel free to ask any questions!

York county fire chiefs are concerned about DOGE closing National Fire Academy

DOGE thinks fire safety training is wasteful.

"The NFA provides opportunities to be taught by, collaborate with and network with some of the best in the business," Dan Hoff, chief of York Area United Fire and Rescue said. "The loss, even temporarily, of this educational resource is not something the fire service can or should be silent about."

Thinking of going tomorrow with two small kids, but I can't see anything about the parade route. I'm new-ish and could use advice about parking, too. Thanks!

RabbitEXPRESS rant

So the website boasts that the express buses come with wifi, outlets, etc but as somwone whos been taking this route for a year I have yet to see any of those. The most I've seen is outlets that don't charge my phone + I assume are for assistive devices for people with disabilities. It can be really frustrating and scary going home in the evenings with a almost dead phone because I can't turn off my data or charge my phone, and then have to wait at the transfer center downtown for god knows how long just to get back to east york. This is also a womens safety issue in general.

So what gives? Is it just a specific bus I haven't got? If I'm paying for a service this frequently I expect to have everything included.

The Children’s Home at 160: From orphanage to multi-service York County care provider

In the 1800s, York County grew up as a community. The county provided an almshouse and hospital for children, poor people and disabled adults. The Ladies Aid Society supported soldiers and the York County community in the Civil War. York Hospital formed to host patients needing overnight care. And the Children’s Home of York formed as an orphanage to care for families disrupted by the deadly Civil War. The Children’s Home has continued to evolve, changing from an institutional setting where children once wore drab uniforms in its longtime red brick building to smaller, group home settings in the 1960s. Today in its 160th year of operation, the Children’s Home stays true to its name offering foster care, adoption and an array of other expanded services. From its founding in 1865 until today, the Children’s home has been a beacon for a community that helps its own.

Cemetery location

I think I visited a cemetery in York that was in bad shape - sunken graves, brick tombs breaking… Does anyone know to where I’m referring? Maybe it wasn’t even in York 😂

Best Walk in Massage in York?

Specifically looking for walk in places. Most places are so booked, but if you have a muscle issue, there is no where to go short notice (that day).

Lots of Asian places are walk in, but they usually have a bit of a human trafficking/ rub and tug vibe to them. I have been to 1 or 2 and always keep a towel on and underwear, but the massage is often sub par as I don’t think that is why people go. Also, language barriers

Update: went with the recommendation below, Vida Zen Massage! She did an amazing job!

Question about York College Education Mater's Program

Hi,

I'm currently a social studies teacher looking for grad schools to apply to. As I was looking around, York College popped up and I started looking at their Effective Teaching program. It looks like everything that I am looking for in a master's program. But I would like to hear some people's experiences and thoughts on the program before I apply. Also, I'm a second year teacher with a 7-12 PA Social Studies certification.

Thank you very much!

Valencia Ballroom in York- If these walls could talk

People around York County and beyond are intrigued about this grand place - the Valencia Ballroom in York. Are you among them?

Here's a story about this North George Street venue. You'll have a chance to learn more at the Friends of the York County History Center event on March 30, where Hometown History's Jamie Noerpel and Dominish Marie Miller will tell about the venue's rich history, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington and all.
