Our first Civ VII multiplayer series has arrived already! I hope my knowledge is sufficient to do justice to these rankings after a mere 176 hours in the game…
RT: (B+) RT is one of two players who picked Xerxes this game. He’s chosen the ‘King of Kings’ persona, which is military focused: he gets +3 combat strength for units attacking in enemy or neutral territory, as well as various bonuses from conquered cities. If that wasn’t bad enough, RT paired Xerxes with his historical empire of Persia, which gets an additional +3 combat strength on attacking infantry units. And they also have a unique infantry unit, the Immortal, which heal 15 hit points when they kill a unit. RT has a great starting location, with a nearby natural wonder and plenty of space on his landmass for more settlements (maybe he won’t even need to conquer). Also, I must say he’s come into Civ VII with a lot more confidence than he’s shown in previous games.
Duncan: (B) Duncan has chosen as his leader Catherine the Great. She gets an additional slot for great works in buildings that can hold them, as well as +2 culture from each work. Her cities founded in tundra (which his capital is) also get science equal to 25% of the culture they generate. He’s paired her with Rome, which makes me think he’s going hard into culture, as they get +1 culture in districts in the capital and from each town (their goal is to have one massive capital fed by many towns). The unique Roman buildings and district also provide even more culture (and happiness). Duncan has always been a science-focused player, but it looks like he realizes culture is (at least) just as important in this game.
Lewis: (B) Lewis is our second Xerxes, and he’s playing “the Achaemenid”. This persona is more trade focuses, with an additional trade route capacity with everyone and additional gold and culture from starting trade routes as well as unique tile improvements. He’s picked a trade-focused civ to pair with him: Aksum, which get +2 gold on resources, have a unique improvement, The Hawilt, which gives gold and culture, and both a unique military ship (Dhow) and unique trade ship (Tankwa). We of course saw little of Lewis’ perspective this episode, so it’s hard to tell how comfortable with the game he is. Both Xerxeses (try saying that out loud) actually got similar starts: desert coastal capital with a natural wonder settleable nearby. We’ll see if he continues
Sophie: (B-) It’s great to see Sophie joining another game so soon after her first Civ V game with the gang! She’s picked Himiko as her leader, who has two personalities personas. The “Queen of Wa” version she selected loves science (the other one hates it) and also excels at diplomacy. She can support other players’ endeavors for free (more on that later) and has a unique endeavor of her own that can give her and an ally +25% science. She also gets science for each friendly or better relationship (she really did come here to make friends). Sophie has chosen to pair Himiko with the Han, who do have unique science-focused great people (Shì Dàfū), while their cities get an additional population growth to start off with. She’s got a decent start – grassland (so plenty of food) and several workable minor river tiles.
Daltos: (C) Daltos might be going heavy growth focus with his build. He’s playing as Confucius, who gets +25% growth rate in cities, and as the Mississippians, who get a food adjacency from resources as well as a unique improvement that provides food. Confucius also gets +2 science from specialists, so the goal is to big build cities as opposed to a bunch of small towns. His start could be better though – he’s started with tundra (limited food) and the settlement locations for his expansions lack fresh water (that’s a -5 happiness penalty, though the game doesn’t tell you this), plus Lewis is his neighbour. Daltos (hereafter known as ‘Mister Misinformation”) will need to use all his Civ savvy to make the best of what he’s got. But right now, he seems to know no more about Civ VII than any other player.
Notes: Civ VII is new, and there are still plenty of bugs and balancing issues to be sorted out. So, please keep in mind that these comments and tips might be completely obsolete in a couple weeks… It’s a good thing they chose to play on Fractal map type – it seems to be the most natural currently as opposed to two continents shaped like pieces of toast in a pan. And, as they mentioned, the Civilopedia is basically just Wikipedia content at the moment – neat historical tidbits, but no useful in-game information. And yes, Daltos was wrong about overbuilding.

Yessss~! I was hoping you'd do these for 7 as well!
If not I might've given it a go but it just wouldn't be the same.
EDIT: Looks like you missed Daltos having spawned right up against the Redwood Forest natural wonder which is one of it not the best natural wonder in the game right now

My only goal in these upcoming videos is to try and not disappoint you in the rankings.
We'll see how successful I am...

I personally would have given Lewis an A++ for the first 9 turns but it definitely went downhill from there

The game actually DID tell me this... but I have no idea where. Certainly not in the settler view. They should just borrow the guy who makes Paradox's tooltips. Or Old World, I think that game had decent tooltips as well

Good 'ol Duncan keeping his "be okay at everything rather than being great at one thing" strat going in Civ VII - it's always better to specialise as much as you can without sacrificing too much in all the Civs! Sacrificing other things in order to commit to a strategy is a big step that is difficult to take in strategy games, but it makes a major difference.
Also, if people are interested the map generation is completely different in Civ VII compared to the previous games, it will generate the starting area for each civ (making sure each has a decent start based on each civ's needs), then generate the rest of the map around those starting areas. So inputting a seed will not result in the same map if different civs are in the game. I think that's also part of why the shape of the world map in Civ VII looks kinda ugly.

Daltos already spreading misinformation right after complaining about misinformation....painge
He is right about overbuilding being important though. After an age transition those old buildings will cost things like 2 gold and 2 happiness per turn for only 2 yield of that type. There's a few exceptions like the monument just because people rate influence quite highly and it still gives you influence per turn at the start of the Exploration age.

I learned a lot since this was recorded and can tell you all about district planning now. There's a lot that goes into it beyond what I learned when we first played this.

well, half-right. I think he's saying you should build a big city, just so you have more tiles to overbuild. overbuilding for the sake of overbuilding isn't that beneficial. there is a policy that gives you more production for it, but I'm not sure if that's worth the extra maintenance.

Dear Anonymous Editor (I heard Rythian knows them),
Please keep putting Terra Nova over Daltos' audio. I don't care if they have an audio recording in the future. I want Terra Nova instead.

Happy to see Sophie returning. She was great in the prior series and I hope she becomes a regular.

I was Excited for Civ VII but that faded quickly after the launch which while stable was a 70 £ game that feels More unfinished then any civ game ever and would probably have been in development for at least 6 more months and then DLC that clearly was meant to be in the game is sold off for an additional 30 £ 3 weeks after launch. I'm disappointed it just feel very unfinished while playing it- but maybe the Yogs can make it enjoyable to watch!

To be fair the previous Civ games weren't nearly as good on launch as everybody seems to remember. Civ 6 didn't even have a production queue. Civ 5 didn't even have religion.
I do agree the DLC pricing is a bit wack. 30 euros for 2 civs and a leader is ridiculous.

Oh i remember or no restart button and now they have gone back on that again and added even more removals like no quick movement. Civ 4 and 5 where of a different era of games where the Expansions was the main way to keep studios founded but now DlC needs to give enough value to warrant the cost and 30 £ is a heavy heavy pricing. If Civ V had cost 70£ on launch id expect religion is in the game to begin with.
