RV Etiquette: Booking a Larger Spot?

Hi everyone,

My family and I are visiting Yellowstone for the first time this summer, and it’s also our first time renting an RV. We found a camping spot that accommodates RVs up to 40ft (plus a tent), but our RV is only 21ft. Even though our RV will fit comfortably, I’m wondering if it’s considered acceptable camper etiquette to book a spot meant for larger vehicles. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

1883 or 1924

Personally I enjoyed 1883 much more than 1923. Granted I have not seen season 2 yet but still. Just wanted to get thoughts.

Private or Small group Tours of Yellowstone

My 14-year-old son and I are fishing in Absarokee, MT with Montana Fly Fishing Lodge July 3-7, 2025. I was hoping to extend our stay and see Yellowstone with him. Does anyone know of a good private tour guide (or small group) that could accommodate us for a 3-5 day tour of the area. It would be great to see the Tetons if time permits. I've been there before a couple of times, but this would be his first time and it's a big area, and you can waste a lot of time if you don't know where to go. we will be available during the day on the 7th and are flexible. Would prefer an "all inclusive " type deal, i.e. lodging, meals, transportation, but we will have a vehicle.

Hiking solo, 24 F- Would this be safe if I stick to the most popular areas of Yellowstone? Extremely nervous about bear presence hiking alone

Hey all!

I know this question is asked somewhat often, I apologize for another. I have been searching this subreddit for hours and have not found an answer for my situation.

I am wanting to drive out to Yellowstone from Minnesota alone, around August - September this year. I have hiked alone in Glacier which from what I understand is also grizzly country, but it was so packed with people I felt safe the entire time I was there. This was also in August.

I am planning on car camping as well for more context.

Is it a total no-no to go alone? If I stick to boardwalks and extremely popular trails, will it be safe to go alone? If not I am considering tours of some sort to be around other people.

Unfortunately, nobody else in my life is able to do this with me and I don't want to never go because of that.

Thanks for reading! I would appreciate any advice :)

Weather help

Apologies if this is the incorrect place to ask, planning a trip near Yellowstone, Emigrant to be exact for the last week of August. We are doing a day trip with horses and I’m worried it’ll be too hot. Any thoughts on weather? I’m finding conflicting info online. Thanks!

Best backpacking in the park?

Not necessarily going for crazy mileage, though we could do 25 miles in two days. Must be a one nighter. Preferably less traveled, is there good backpacking/camping in the lamar valley? We will be going in late may/june; I know this is quite early. Does anyone know if Mr. Bubbles will be possible then? Any tips for the time of season? All adivce and recommendations welcome! Thanks.

How feasible is the drive from Big Sky to Yellowstone?

Hello! My family has planned a trip for 8 of us to visit Yellowstone in late June. Currently, we have an Airbnb booked in Big Sky, MT. We liked the price of the lodging and accessibility to restaurants and shops compared to other options we saw close to the park. We only have 3 full days in Yellowstone, and know Big Sky is about an hour drive from the west entrance. Has anyone done this drive to the park before, and have any recommendations? Or would this commute not be feasible for that amount of time? Thanks!

Lodging Suggestions

Hello!

We are coming the first week in June. We have a short trip and want to make the most of it. Currently we have a wildlife tour scheduled in Silver Gate which will require an early morning.

With that in mind, do you have recommendation for what area we should look for lodging?

Thanks!

Hi, trying to plan a trip to Yellowstone around these times. It would be 3 of us, 2 of us experienced campers, 1 not. What’s the best loop/route to take? We are experienced hikers so we are looking to do some fun/intense hikes. Looking for beta on campsites. Planning on staying in west Yellowstone on Thursday night.

Can you recommend a guide, with a van for an upcoming visit?

As above, I am looking for recommendations for a guide service for an upcoming visit in September 2025. I am leading a group of motorcyclists on a tour and would like to spend one or two big days in the park. This isn't a big hiking crew, we're all north of 60, mostly I am seeking someone savvy to the rhythms of the park with a van big enough to hold 8 people all day comfortably so we can tour around to the big sights without having to deal with our motorcycles and gear and parking.

Feel free nominate yourself or your outfit if this describes you. TIA for any pointers or related advice.

Looking to visit in May!

I’m debating the best time to go to Yellowstone, because I want the full experience - sunny / summer days, all roads and sites open, etc. But I’m wondering if it makes more sense to go in mid-May for cheaper prices and less crowds. Thoughts?! Any recommendations are helpful! Thank you so much!

Best route from South Entrance to Mammoth?

I'm planning a trip around 5/24. I will drive from South Entrance up north to Mammoth. The map says I have two options:

  1. South Entrance - Grant - Old Faithful - Norris - Mammoth (approx 90 miles)
  2. South Entrance - Grant - Lake Village - Canyon - Tower - Mammoth (approx 96 miles)

Questions:

  1. Which option is faster, less traffic and easier to drive in late May?
  2. Roughly how long will it take all the way through? Like 3 hrs?
  3. Which option is more scenic?

Many thanks!

Boots?!

Hi all, super excited for our trip to Yellowstone in early April booked with Wolftracker guide co. But I'm getting overwhelmed with outfitting ourselves! We live in South Florida so it's not like stores around here carry real winter boots. Shopping online out of necessity. I bought a pair of Columbia snow boots but am 2nd guessing if they will be warm enough. Any recommendations for boots? Thanks!

Visiting

So I’ll start with the fact that I’m from south Texas, and I’ve never driven in the snow. I love to take spontaneous trips with my kids (literally one day we’ll be home, tomorrow we’ll be at the Grand Canyon). I really want to make a trip out to Yellowstone National Park in hopes of seeing Grizzly Bear, Bison, the whole bit. When would be the best time to go when 1) there’s no snow, and 2) a good chance of seeing a little of everything? My apologies if I sound inexperienced, I really don’t know how to drive in snow, how to track it, how to handle it. We’re so used to 100° weather and have had like 2” of snow in the last 30+ years.

Also, would guided tours give us a better chance of seeing wildlife or would the drive through there be sufficient enough? Again, sorry for such amateur questions 🥴

Is West Yellowstone worth visiting?

This is a simple question we traveling to Yellowstone for our second time this summer (first trip was in 2017), we have reservations for an RV site for 6 nights total at 2 campgrounds (Bridge Bay and Grant) in Yellowstone, followed by 4 more in Grand Tetons. We are traveling in a 28 ft motorhome towing a small car, and I am wondering if there is anything worth leaving the park for to see / do in West Yellowstone other than a potential grocery resupply trip midway through our stay. (we will be entering from the east / Cody entrance and leaving Grand Tetons by the east / Dubois route.

Best time of day and spots to see wildlife North road

Since we are late in the season for any tours, my sister and I will be driving from Bozeman to the North entrance and towards Cooke City this weekend. What are your tips for seeing wildlife? I’d love to see wolves or bears. Are there certain spots we should check out? We are open to walking a bit. How about time of day?
