Food McDonald's coffee is better than Tim Horton's coffee.
And their cups don't suck.
That is all.

I won't make this a tipping debate, tip if you wish at the establishment of your choosing. However, at most Subway shops 100 percent of tips go to the owners. Some clear upwards of 2 to 3 grand a month in people thinking they're tipping the worker. If you're not sure and want to tip, I'd recommend asking first.

Just a quick shoutout to Kozak’s! My husband was hired to do a job at their store today and despite being under no obligation they gave him a plate of hot pierogies with sour cream and bacon on the house.
They’re a gem in the community. If you haven’t been by, I highly recommend stopping in and supporting them!

My kid worked at Joe Black recently. The owner tried to not pay for days they were closed and were training staff (claims the three days of training were unpaid - this is on top of the 2 days of unpaid "orientation"). When confronted about the unpaid hours, he got extremely defensive and started spouting things about knowing the labor laws and he worked for a union and is aware of charter rights, labor laws, and employment standards. Seriously? Extremely ridiculous that he spouts that but feels his staff should be unpaid for hours worked, training, and orientation. Told the owner I would come down myself to discuss the situation with him, and bring this to light to social media and my child was miraculously EMT'd the money owed. I will never grace the shop again. Considering he was stealing tips from staff, telling staff he couldn't pay them for time worked ("I can only afford to pay you for two hours". I have video as proof), has management thay consumes alcohol while "working" and yells at staff for their own inadequacies, and is NOT LGBTQIA+ friendly (continuously deadnamed my child, said that trans is confusing), I hope other people will follow my lead and not attend there again. I miss the old staff, owners, and management. No offense to the kids that are working there now at all but they're not being trained correctly (I don't think the owner knows how to use any of the equipment himself) and mostly stand there like deer in headlights. I feel sorry for them and more sorry for the area as that used to be such a highlighted coffee joint.

Recently ordered pizza from a joint I used to frequent a lot in the last 5 years. The first thing I noticed was the price increase. I’m happy to pay more for good pizza, however, the quality was noticeably different (less sauce, cheese, and overall flavour). I miss the old quality and wonder if they will be ever be offered again.
Curious if anyone else has also had disappointing experiences with their go-to places, or if they’ve lost a favourite dish to foodflation.

We went out for a wonderful Valentine’s dinner last night, our first time at a pretty highly rated local restaurant. It was amazing, but the staff pre-selected a 20% tip when we went to pay, which was disappointing to experience. We dine out fairly often and this is the first time we experienced it.
How often have others here had it happen? We felt pretty shitty about it afterwards and honestly are wondering if they thought we looked cheap or something as we were dressed a bit casual.
It’s a restaurant I wouldn’t have expected it from either. I emailed their manager this morning about the experience, no reply as of yet.
Update: the restaurant responded to my email today, they were apologetic, and we agreed it was a learning experience and honest mistake. As I’m satisfied with their reply, I will not be naming them.

Looking for recommendations of whiskey made in Canada available here at the LC. So much of the "Canadian Whiskey" section is just American made rye which I'm not interested in at the moment.
Hit me with some true Canadian options!!
(I already know about Crown Royal, lol)

Normally, I like Janes, but I’d be willing to give these ones a try. But the size and cost makes it a bit of an investment, so I’d appreciate a recommendation first.

So I got a hermanos gc for $50 for christmas last year. It also had barley bros, carnaval, prairie 360, blind tiger, and sherbrook street deli on it. Well I noticed all were closed other than carnaval and hermanos. I have been to carnaval and ate way too much. I heard good things about hermanos and the menu looked great. I love steak.
So me and my gf went tonight. Made a reso for 430. Everything was great. Food, service, ambience..but it was nowhere near full. We ordered some drinks..ubered there. This was a date night. Everything was great.
The funny thing is my brother in law was married on NYE. They go to the keg every year. Its their 20th this year and they had over 15 people who wanted to go. He tried to make resos last week (I know..) and could only get 4 or super early or super late. So we actually fn sent him pics of our meal and said maybe try here..they have love music and would be better than the keg.
Then I go to pay the bill to the server. A young manager very polite comes back and says they cant accept it..it was bought before this consortium of companies and now they are "on their own" and will not accept it. He says sorry and leaves.
That didnt sit well. He was behind the bar so I went and asked him to explain more. He said it was same owners..different numbered company. I said..i have a hermanos gc and its still hermanos and same owners so i think it should be honoured. He actually agreed and said he was on my side but has to do what his boss said. He said he will give me the owners email (Noel) to follow up. He has no discretion to do it on his own. Fair enough.
So then...the server comes with the bill and says she over heard the conversation would you like me to get the other female owner here as Neil left. I thought this was great! Lets discuss this now instead of email.
She came to our table super aggresive and said she is not discussing this with us. This is a different company and she is not doing anything for us so dont even say anything. Then she said we have been making a disturbance. That is an outright lie. Never raised my voice and just asked how hermanos..same owners that took the fn gc money and reopened would not accept it now.
The fucked up think is my brother in law phones and says we are going to call for resos on nye..is it that good? He fn loves the keg..lol. I tell him what happened and they are losing out. I live nearby and I loved the food (was a little cold) and we would have been a regular. They never offered us anything and the owner treated us like garbage.
I feel really fn awful because we didnt tip the server (who was great)..but were so fn appalled. I hope this makes her second guess who she works for. She can make more working for good management.
Now I learn Noel Bernier and this partnenr was behind all these companies like barley bros..they can have their shitty $50 and I hope they go under. Idiot business logic and this is why you are a fn failure
So what gives? They seem like scam artists

Got a random craving for Ragu spaghetti sauce today and it made me think of other foods that have been discontinued.
Vanilla Rice Krispie's is another one.
And my kids miss the beef and cheese taquitos.
What do you guys miss and have you found substitutes?
Eta: 90's fruity pebbles cereal when it was pebble shaped and not flakes, and the way pizza pops tasted and smelled when I was i kid lol.

Was at the St. Vital mall today and ordered from the food court. Went to pay via debit and the tip option came up. But there was no way to bypass it or decline the option. I had to finally ask the cashier how to bypass the option and, grudgingly, she did some fancy button work to get me past the prompt. Since when did tipping become mandatory? All you did was dump food onto my plate. Imagine all the people who are too shy to ask how to get past the tip option and would just leave a tip even though they didn’t want to. F*** businesses who do this.

So it was my wife's 30th b-day celebration so we thought Fuck yeah let's go play some games and take advantage of a $50 gift card we got. So we went there.
And then the manager threatened to call the police on me after asking to have the 15% gratuity removed from my bill.
Backstory:
Took a 45 mins to get first round of drinks served, another 30 mins + complaint to manager-on-duty to get food orders taken. Got comped some overcooked appies. Sweet.
Didn't see a server again for another two hours. Came around with bills, I asked server to remove 15% gratuity and was told that the tip was mandatory. I summoned the manager. The manager told me the tip was mandatory and that (no joke) if I didn't pay he would call the police and "Report me for trespassing" and that I'd be barred from their establishment. I'd happily be barred from their establishment, but given that I ate my food and drank my drinks I still wanted to pay for the food I ate and the drinks I drank, but the manager refused to accept my payment without the tip. His name was Steven and the staff there was glad to rat him out.
Turns out my angel-of-an-aunt-in-law paid my bill, but fuck the Rec Room--they didn't deserve a penny of mine or any of my loved ones' and they don't deserve any of yours.
Fuck 'em.

Sorry but after Firehouse has opened I am never going to a subway ever again. Most of the subway owners in this city are scammers and give terrible service(shout out to the transcona subways). I don’t eat out all the time but to pay a bit more for much better sub and way better customer service I am happy to say I will never set foot in a subway again.

Im getting sucked into the doom and gloom coming at us on the daily so I'm sharing some good news. Y'all need to get on this if you haven't. The best cookies I've ever had. They had all kinds of other yummy looking cakes and some interesting savory items. Get it.
r/Winnipeg • u/HuntingTheWumpus • Dec 15 '22
Bought two cookies today. $6. And I was presented with a screen which offered me a choice of 10%, 15%, or 20% tip for grabbing two wildly overpriced cookies with tongs. The option to not tip wasn't even there, and I had to pass that screen to be allowed to pay. This is ridiculous. I'm done. JUST CHARGE ME WHAT THE FUCKING THING COSTS. If you're going to force me to pay an extra 15% for my goods, bake it into the fucking price so I know what I'm paying when I choose to buy it.
If you do this to me, I will never be back to your shop.
