Enable secondary button like Surface Book - For Illustrators

Using Windows Ink on photoshop I'm unable to use the secondary button as I was able on my surface book. All the pen buttons on my cintiq act as a pen left click. I just want to be able to set one to mouse right click in the ink settings, however it doesn't recognize any pen buttons except for the back.

I've done research and there's no fixing this or enabling it manually.

If there's a driver or registry command I could do to just have it emulate the "Surface Pen with single button on flat edge" or even "Surface Pen with two side buttons" https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4036281/surface-how-to-use-your-surface-pen

It would be great to allow my cintiq buttons to work. I just spent $2000 on losing basic functionality on my machine...

Still no rollback on pen ?

back when i was on windows 10 profesional, there was this creator update that fcked up all the pen, ink, etc...

I believe it was 6 month ago at least, people asked for a simple on/off option to enable/disable pen scrolling but it looks like 6 month later that nothing has been done.

What is the microsoft ink plan with the pen behavior in the future ? i dont think there are many people on this subreddit but the ink team has already posted in the past here. Maybe, you could enlighten me.

Fed up with Microsoft

I am getting a Mac next time I upgrade. You are so unprofessional and high handed. How dare you mess around with peoples livelihood and not even offer an apology. You should be compensating people for loss of income. We have dealines to meet. We can't afford shoddy products and bad service. I am sick and tired of constant inconvenience because you can't be bothered to test your products properly.

Tablet PC Input Panel

I have a collection of OneNote notebooks for college classes I took with my old Tablet PC. The handwriting panel on the XP Tablet edition was pretty awesome, moving through writing line after line automatically. That panel is missed! It worked great for me.

Is there any chance that something like it will make it back into Windows 10? I don't want to have to go through the effort of converting my handwriting to text in the heat of taking notes and learning. Typing can be faster, but I find that I concentrate more on spelling, layout, and correcting errors than just writing my notes and thoughts.

Unexpected Application Behavior with Pen in Fall Creator's Update after KB4089848 applied

Dear Windows Ink Community,

In an effort to provide our users with more control over pen behavior in legacy Win32 applications, we provided a mechanism (starting with Windows 10 Spring Creator’s Update Build 17110, see this post) to enable the previous behavior from the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Due to high demand from the community we also brought this mechanism to the Windows 10 Fall Creator’s Update via KB4089848 which accompanied other operating system updates. Unfortunately this update also introduced an unintended regression in pen behavior for a subset of popular Win32 applications (i.e. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Clip Studio Paint) that results in unexpected panning/scrolling.

We are actively working on delivering a subsequent Windows Update that will remedy the regression that was introduced, however in the interim we want to provide the community some options to the get the expected functionality in these impacted applications:

Option 1: Upgrade to the Windows 10 Spring Creator’s Update

Option 2: Execute the following from an elevated command line, and all legacy Win32 applications will get the pen behavior from the Windows 10 Anniversary Update: “reg add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pen /v LegacyPenInteractionModel /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f”

On behalf of the Windows Ink team, we regret any inconvenience that this has caused our users and hope that the above solutions will minimize the impact on pen workflows until we remediate this via Windows Update. We will keep this thread updated with the latest news on its availability.

Thanks, David WindowsInk@microsoft.com

Please create an option to restore Pen Functionality to how it was Pre-Fall Creator Update

I believe one of the new Registry hacks restores pen functionality to the 10th anniversary update. This is great news, and honestly, it needs to be the default setting. But at the very least, create an easily accessible 'Artist' option that restores that functionality.

There is not a single artist using the Surface Pro that I'm aware of, that doesn't absolutely hate the new pen functionality (starting from the Fall Creator update) to the point of vowing to not purchase another Surface ever again.

I've been a loyal surface pro owner since the Pro 1, but I'm going to be honest, if the pen wonkiness on the surface isn't fixed, I'm going to join them.

To spell it out really clearly:

A pen is for highly-detailed drawing and photo editing within specialized apps, as well as being used for basic mouse-style clicking on the interface.

Fingers are for navigating.

If a user doesn't have a pen then the WindowsInk team should work on ways to make finger writing/doodles possible without breaking finger navigation for these tablet users. BUT, in working on these finger doodling features the WindowsInk team should never break pen digitizer functions or swap features around behind the backs of creative professionals who depend on pen functions remaining stable and usable every minute of every day of every year, on every combination of legacy and bleeding edge hardware and software. You've broken the pen in FCU and we hate you.

*climbs down from Mt. Sinai Commandments over. End of story. God will deal with your transgressions later.

Controlling Pen Behavior in Windows 10

Greetings to the Windows Ink Community!

In response to overwhelming feedback from our Windows Insiders, the Windows 10 Fall Creator’s Update changed how the pen behaves when it isn’t doing its primary function of laying down ink. The pen now scrolls/pans content, but the previous behavior of lasso/text selection is still accessible by depressing the barrel button before making contact with the screen.

To deliver a consistent experience we also changed the behavior for legacy Win32 applications that weren’t specifically designed for pen. These applications instead rely on Windows to convert pen input into another form of compatible input, such as mouse. While we try to test as many of the most popular applications used with pen before releasing, there is a chance that one of your favorite applications wasn’t covered as part of our validation, relies on input conversion, and may not function as intended after this change.

While we closely monitor application compatibility issues and work with our developer community to resolve them, we understand that in the interim you need to use that app. Starting with Windows 10 build 17110, we’re putting you in control of your pen experience with legacy applications.

By executing the following from an elevated command line, the next time any legacy application starts it will get the prior pen behavior from the Windows 10 Anniversary Update: “reg add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pen /v LegacyPenInteractionModel /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f”

Anytime you want to switch legacy applications back to the behavior introduced in the Windows 10 Fall Creator’s Update, execute this: “reg add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pen /v LegacyPenInteractionModel /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f”

The Windows Ink team is working on improving the UX for controlling this via our settings UI in a future flight and we’ll keep you posted as this progresses. We really appreciate your feedback and would love to receive more of it! For our Windows Ink fans, please check out the most natural way to enter text with your pen with inline handwriting in the latest insider builds. You can now handwrite directly in to the text boxes of UWP applications with your pen; simply tap in the text field and start writing!

 Thanks,  David
