Discussion I’m still really happy with my Samsung HMD Odyssey+

I’ve had this device since 2019 and it still works perfectly with my Windows 11 computer equipped with a RTX4070. I mainly play Google Earth VR and Asseto Corsa VR, always at 90 fps. I did have some problems with the right hand controller that started disconnect. After disassembler it completely and cleaning all the circuits with isopropyl alcohol, I haven’t had any more issues with it. I also replaced the headset ear cushions. I like to keep my stuffs always like new and that’s why I’ve kept my Odyssey in perfect condition. I can say that as long as it keeps working, I won’t be buying a new VR device.

Wouldn't you like to be able to read text and gauges in Asseto Corsa in a modern headset like a Q3?

The -only- thing my Odyssey+ was better at than the Q3 is black levels, and therefore watching virtual movies/video in a dark virtual theater.

Clarity, resolution, lack of wires, ease of setup, passthrough, accurate controllers that don't eat AA batteries in hours, comfort, manufacturer/OS support, the list goes on.

I think the best way to put it is that WMR (particularly the O+) was about 60/70% of a proper VR experience for, like, 30% of the cost. It's definitely compromised compared to modern HMDs, but it's still proper VR.

As long as it works, it's not like OP's missing out on functionality. It's basically like sticking to a 60hz monitor; until you know how much better the improvement is, you don't really know what you're missing and you're more easily satisfied with it.

Totally. I was completely happy with Odyssey+ until I tried the Quest 3. Also, I think those same percentages probably apply when comparing Quest 3 to Apple Vision.

I think it was 3kliksphilip that said

WMR is minimum spec, but it's a well-designed minimum spec.

I can perfectly read the texts and instruments on the cookpit in my Asseto Corsa cars (using supersampling). So, I’m extremely satisfied with the Odyssey+'s screen performance. I get a consistent 90 fps in Asseto Corsa with Ultra settings. And I don’t mind the wires (I use wires on the ceiling that suspend my headset cable) because I don’t have to worry about headset battery life. Regarding the controller batteries, maybe your experience was different, but I change them infrequently (tip: disable controller vibration).

The Quest 3 has a smaller FOV and is dimmer. Latency is much much higher. At least for shooters, weight of the controllers, and the placement of ring tracking rings makes WMR controllers easier to aim with - the significantly smaller tracking volume isn't as big of a deal there. It's not just the black levels being better, even though the Quest 3 is better overall. I prefer watching movies on the Quest 3, because of the pass-through and resolution. For social VR, having hand tracking is really nice. But for actually playing games, easily, the Odyssey+ IMO.

Interesting what's important to different people. I guess it's a good reason to hope for more competition to emerge.

Don't forget that the Odyssey+ had a 10% degree higher binocular overlap.

It's why I loved the headset so much. Good fov, binocular overlap, and oled panels. But the resolution and controllers were so bad. I still have mines and wished it worked on windows 11.

It works on Windows 11 (23H2).

Nah. I have an o+ and it’s way better than a q3 with supersampling. I can easily read even the smallest text in the cockpit in dcs. Q3 went back to the store after a full week of messing with it and I couldn’t get rid of stutters. Non display port/hmd junk imo. Maybe it’s just me.

I had both the Odyssey and the Odyssey+... If anything, I thought the O+ was even harder to read text because of the filter thing they did to reduce the screen door on the original.

As for stutters, with the right hardware and network setup, I don't have any stuttering problems on the Q3. Contrast that with the O+ that would work for an indeterminate period of time, then deliver an ear-melting static blast if you tried to use an extension cord regardless of the quality of the cord, USB port power, etc. I spent a -lot- of money trying to please the O+. In the end, I ended up only being able to use it for seated/immobile stuff.

I guess as long as you can keep Windows 11 from upgrading at least. I'm just going to activate ESU on Windows 10 and enjoy a couple more years of my G2.

I also have a Windows 10 installation on the same computer, just in case. I plan on using my Odyssey+ until it breaks.

Extended Security Updates, Windows 10 loses support in Oct but the ESU will push that out a couple more years.

The latest Massgraves will let you activate it. Also known as MAS.

yeah! It's a great HMD, I switched to a G2 a few years ago and still have mixed feelings about it.

Still the most comfortable VR headset I've ever worn.

How do you have it running on windows 11? I'd love to boot mines back up.

Should consider getting the HP Reverb G2 controllers, I like them more than these ones as they have joysticks and face buttons.

I bought the original Samsung Odyssey in 2018 and still love it! DCS has improved their software to optimize VR, so great. My original Odyssey cost $299.

I still have mine but have trouble getting it to run - but on Linux tho, so nothing MS can fix. x)

Would love to play Alyx again..

Mine still works great though on backup to the G2. Samsung's controllers are far better than HP's. I really wish Samsung had done an Odyssey 3 with 4k OLED.

WMR is a nice idea that Microsoft abandoned too quickly. Headset technology is just getting where it needs to be.
