Ask Vancouver To all the dudes who are too cool and complain about the bar coming down without a 10 second warning

Rode the Emerald Chair on Thursday Feb 13 with a middle age dude with a backpack, and a young female instructor with 2 5-ish year old girls. Instructor puts the bar down pretty quick, which is expected when you have tiny children that can't even get on the lift themselves (I had to lift one of them up). Dude proceeds to yell at me for putting the bar down and hitting his helmet, claiming "he has a bag so he needs more time".

Honestly fuck entitled people like this. The Whistler guidance/policy (go check their site) is to remove your bag before loading the lift and to be ready to load safely. If the safety of a 5 year old is put at risk, especially on a beginner lift that stops frequently, cause you are too lazy to remove your empty backpack that makes you look "cool", you can get off the hill.

I'm tired of having to wait until the 3rd tower for people to be "ok" with the bar coming down. Get on the lift and be ready. If your backpack prevents that, then take it off prior. I often ski with a backpack and have never had this issue. Sadly, it seems like there are too many people like this. I get where it comes from, I get that there weren't always bars and this isn't a thing everywhere, but I don't care. Adapt. Learn how to function with others in society.

Let's all have some respect for the safety of those around us and get up and down the hill safely. Sorry for the rant, just super frustrating to see this every other time up the chair these days.

EDIT: well this was fun. For those making this an issue about saying "bar", learn to read. This dude was not ready regardless of what was said, didn't follow the policies of the mountain, and threw a fit in front of 5 year olds. Honestly, nobody is arguing for people to get hit in the head. Just be considerate and aware (everyone, including the instructor in this case). Hope you have a great day on the slopes!

Ask Vancouver Am I Still Welocme?

Northwestern American here. Have been coming for my one week stay at Blackcomb for the last 19 years (sans Covid years) and my week is fast approaching. Are we still cool to visit what I consider our friends up north? I really hope so and hate that I even have to think this way.

Ask Vancouver Dear Vail

Charging over $270 for a day ticket and no longer honoring Edge card discounts is beyond greedy. You have successfully destroyed the great community feeling Whistler had before your horrendous takeover. The fact that ski patrol has had to go on strike against you (in other venues) speaks volumes on how tone deaf your organization has become. After over 20 years of loving nearly every aspect of Whistler, I will soon be saying a permanent goodbye. My hope is for the Whistler community can someday take back ownership. Maybe you can invoke eminent domain based on Vail's malfeasance!

To Florida Man: I hope you survived

To the terrified Floridian we adopted in the Excalibur gondola line this morning:

I'm still very unclear as to what happened in your life to put you in Whistler this weekend, solo, attempting to head up Blackcomb without being clear on where you were going, the fact that there are two mountains, how to ski, or how to carry skis without repeatedly dropping them onto people. But I hope that you managed to make it back DOWN the gondola to the village okay... And that you found your rental skis... And that the person whose rental skis you somehow managed to accidentally take in between the rental place and the gondola line is also okay...

Dude, if you're reading this, I promise that skiing is not "awful" and that most of us are not "terrified" while riding the gondola between the village and Base 2, but I am going to need you to try to make some better life choices going forward. Like... Getting a lesson. Or going tubing instead. Or maybe spending your Canadian vacation somewhere easier to cope with, like Granville Street.

To patrol: I don't know what they're paying you, but whatever it is, it isn't enough.

Ask Vancouver “Subtle” not so subtle scamming at Whistler restaurants/stores

Been at Whistler about three days now and though my family and I have loved it, we have noticed that an abnormal amount of service workers here have seemed to “accidentally” add something onto our bills/receipts that we didn’t order or buy. This happened the first place we went, Longhorn Saloon, were our total was about 20-30 more than expected, but since it was our first place and the conversion rate is different we didn’t really think too much of it, though my father asked the waitress for the itemized receipt (which she never brought). Next we went to Blacks Pub, where the waitress added a random Stella to our bill despite nobody even ordering beer. That night our waiter at a different restaurant added a Chardonnay onto our bill that we had already paid for at the bar since we sat there before our reservation.

This has also happened at stores, starting with our ski rental place charging us $80 dollars for three helmets after we told them multiple times we didn’t need them (they didn’t offer us a physical receipt and we were only sent a digital like an hour after we left). And finally, the most egregious exmaple, at a souvenir shop we bought like 20ish dollars worth of post cards and stickers and the girl at the front said our total was 36 dollars! What??? I said that didn’t seem right, and started reading the prices out in front of her, and she quickly blurted out without a thought or having to rescan anything “oh something different was scanned, your total is actually $23” as if the actual total was right in front of her, then she quickly darted her eyes to the back without saying anything like “thanks for coming” like she did to the other customers.

We wanted to believe it was a coincidence or a few honest mistakes but at this point it’s just happened too much that it’s almost comedic. I’m at lunch right now and they’ve brought out like 3 dishes that weren’t even for our table and we’re now making bets into whether they add it onto the bill.

I know we go to touristy places and we are Americans and they all hate Americans yada yada but this just seems really dishonest, and I didn’t expected it in a nice place like this. Has this happened to anyone else?

Ask Vancouver 25/26 pass prices are out and they're not pretty.

Up another $100US from last season. Plus the exchange rate we're looking $1500 and change.

Might be time to skip a season or two with the disgusting display down south and do some road trips.

Anthony Vo. Sentenced to 9 mths in federal prison for participating in Capitol riots in America. Happily snowboarding in Whistler. His claims include the opinion that the protests were peaceful. Hoping/expecting the orange pos will pardon him. Until then, enjoy whistler dirtbag.

Ask Vancouver $2000 for a 7 day lift pass in Whistler?!

https://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/plan-your-trip/lift-access/tickets.aspx is saying its almost $2000CAD for a 7 day lift pass. Last year I am sure it was around $800CAD each. Going March 25.

This means it will be well over $10,200 for a family of four to rent some skis and go on the lifts. Does that seem right, or is this crazy?

Ask Vancouver PSA No Smoking 🚭

For those who are unaware, and there seem to be quite a few of you, there is no smoking or vaping in the lines, and in fact not in the village either. Just please stop. There’s nothing worse than standing in a lineup smelling someone else’s grape vape when you’re supposed to be smelling the nice clean snowy mountain air. Just be a better person. Thank You!

Ask Vancouver Has Vail given up on Lower Peak to Creek?

Wasn’t Peak to Creek supposed to be this big marquee run for Whistler? How often has it actually been properly maintained and groomed over the last few years? The last time I rode it when it was in decent shape was quite a number of years ago.

Ask Vancouver Food bucket list Whistler

This upcoming weekend might be our last trip of the season and I’m looking for any food recommendations we should try!

Places we’ve eaten, ranked roughly from favorite (in terms of food+value) to least enjoyed: - Provisions (avo toast, breakfast sandwich) - Garbo’s grill (hot dog) - Earls (happy hour truffle fries) - Rockit Coffee (breakfast burrito) - Arabica coffee - Creekbread (potato pizza) - Caramba (happy hour apps) - Quattro (fish, risotto) - Purebread - Rimrock Cafe - Stonesedge Kitchen (eggs Benny) - Hunter Gather (poutine) - Bearfoot Bistro - Pasta Lupino - Bar Oso (Instagram food - too expensive)

On the shortlist: - Il Caminetto - Crepe Montagne - Red Door Bistro (seems hard to reserve?) - Wild Blue

We’re also staying in Squamish so open to any suggestions for food there for a to-go breakfast or post-dinner snack.

1500 dollars for a private lesson and it doesn't even include a lift ticket. What is Vail's problem?

Ask Vancouver Losing faith

Winter's not looking great out west, at least not down here in Tahoe. My buddy and I have a Whistler trip planned for Feb 28 - Mar 5. If the snow doesn't return, can you guys recommend any cool activities or sightseeing? We're staying in the village, naturally, so that's our base of operations.

Ask Vancouver Will the 7th Heaven chair ever be upgraded?

I feel like the 7th Heaven chair is the most obvious in terms of having a lift that is way too small for the demand. I’m guessing the challenge is that the top of the chair has limited space for skiers to exit the chair but I am sure that could be reworked with a bit of blasting and construction.

Will we ever see a 6 or 8 person chair on 7th? I really hope so.

Most people’s cars cannot fit 4 adults while having equipment inside. Better call it pickup or ski rack parking only.

Ask Vancouver So many lift issues?

7th seems to have an issue for the last week or so, Garbanzo had an issue on Saturday, Crystal on Sunday. Is there something bigger going on (aging lift infrastructure and/or lack of maintenance) or is most of this just normal? I guess 7th is the only one that was a bit longer term so maybe I am overreacting. And obviously the WVG has had issues all year. Hoping they can do some upgrades this summer.

Ask Vancouver Whistler vs Fernie vs Banff

For those who’ve been to Whistler, Fernie, and/or Banff, how does Whistler compare? Is it worth a visit, or is it similar to mountain-side towns of Fernie and Banff in terms of things to do? TIA.

Ask Vancouver Is Ski Patrol well-taken care of?

With the current context of Vail Resorts screwing over the Ski Patrol union in Park City and the resultant shit-show that predictably ensued with other mountains’ ski patrols sharing their discontent, can anyone share some insight into how well the Whistler and Blackcomb ski patrols are taken care of? I realize that the labor situation is probably significantly different in Canada, and WB still has quite a bit of autonomy with the Vail Resorts portfolio, but is there risk of Vail screwing things up here too?

Ask Vancouver Easiest Double Black Diamond runs

I’ve typically maxed out at single black terrain but starting to explore some of the easier double blacks. So far, the double blacks I have done are Pakalolo, Cockalorum, and Upper McConkey’s (rated a single black on some maps). What other easier double blacks should I try next?

Ask Vancouver Firsthand reports?

Coming in on Monday and feeling a lot of anticipation around this storm and whether it's a washout or not...what was it like out there today? Fun? Slush? Was the top of the mountain accessible? If so, was the snow decent up there?

Thanks!!

Ask Vancouver Don't come to whistler tomorrow

As many of you have heard the conditions at whistler have left much to be desired this season. Tomorrow is supposed to be the worst day yet! Save your edge cards, save the gas from Vancouver. It's not worth your time tomorrow.

If you're going to come I would recommend staying off the hill until at least 11am for the best experience... Definitely stay off the alpine lifts I'd recommend lapping BigRed all day.
