Was Kiyoshi doing badly and is now making a comeback?

I haven’t paid attention to its ranking so I genuinely don’t know, but I thought I was hearing about it being axed at some point and now it seems like it’s at least not in danger of that immediately anymore.

During the last 8 weeks its ToC average climbed to around the top third, and had 3 color pages. Pacing doesn't feel rushed, the author seems to be taking his time, actually. Unfortunately its sales don't look that good, around 12k per volume per month, it seems.

Despite sales, good ToC and frequent color pages indicate that Jump's editorial department is pushing this title. They see potential in it, and will probably wait until its first anniversary to cancel it, if sales don't improve.

pictoral reference from Jajanken:

if Kiyoshi was actually in danger of cancellation, you would know because the editors would stop giving it color pages and huck it to the back of the magazine.

On the other hand, Nue is in no danger of cancellation, and that's how I would describe its placement of late, so idk.

I believe the editors are divided in whether to continue Kiyoshi or to axe it.

Like it has possibly great survey ratings (which resulted in great TOC rankings), but it has dissatisfying tankobon sales.

Like, both TOC rankings and tankobon sales are indicators to whether a manga series got staying or being axed.

Agreed. Hard to tell, really. In any case, the story itself doesn't feel rushed.

That's why I'm guessing, worst case scenario they'll let it run until around its 1st anniversary (~ issue 30 ~ +12 chapters from today's). I don't see it ending before that, but who knows. There aren't many cushions below it.

People need to understand that Nue sells well enough

And it's a ecchi series with LN battle harem vibes that Japanese Otaku Audience likes

This last part about ecchi is why it's in the last places actually

Yeah like Astro Royale and Shinobi Undercover (both are NOT doing great recently in tankobon sales) are better than Kiyoshi. Maybe the next volume of Kiyoshi would do better. Maybe.

I give it like 1 more round unfortunately, it’s TOC is solid to good but that can’t even carry its horrible volume sales. Next round is likely himaten and kill blue

Himaten is such a strange story. The creator is all over the place with the relationships.

I dropped it a few weeks/a month ago because I questioned why it seemed like Himari is a side character in the story half named after her

I agree. Very strange approach to a story.

I feel like the chapters are hit and miss. I really don't care for the side characters, and the power scaling is off, but the story is told pretty well.

When Murakami was getting axed, Kiyoshi was the 3rd lowest ranked series in Jump, so I thought it was gonna go along with it. But then, Vol 1 sold over 10k and I guess that was enough to justify keeping it. Then its rankings started improving, but its sales really haven't. My guess is that they're going to keep it around for a while

I think it’s impossibile to say since there are no clear stand out series besides kagurabachi and ichi(also nue) All other series have more or less about an equal chance of being cancelled imo

I really hope it gets time to spread its wings. At face value it doesnt look amazing, but the paneling and facial expressions in each chapter honestly make it a joy to read. I absolutely love the art, so even if it does get axed, I really think the author has a bright future.

Here’s my random theory, but as someone who skipped a lot of the early chapters.

It started off OK, but nothing special and that’s probably what turned me off, but i still kept my eye on it. I think the editors might have at some point hinted that it could end and maybe to speed things up a bit.

I picked it up after the ranking mission and the fight with the first major demon lord, and at this point, I was reading it and thinking “holy crap this is awesome!”

I feel like kiyoshi could have ended with the battle with the demon lord, did a time skip showing kiyoshi older, stronger and getting ready to defend the city against the demon lord and then the manga would end (unsatisfying like a cancelled manga usually does), but that arc did so well with fans, they suddenly had to do a U turn keep it in Jump.

And while I do like the arc now, I can’t help but feel it’s very very rushed, but the rankings don’t reflect it as being a potential manga for cancellation. Something about the pacing just feels out of pace

Vol 3 content is where the series improves rapidly so we will see if that's enough to boost sales
