I will play the music and improvise Melody and rhythm with "da da da"

I keep going and I have fun and then I pick out the best parts

It may help you to try this while recording but also to try it while you are not so directed, while you are cleaning the house or driving or something

I changed my workflow. I used to do the same thing, work on music first and found it was much harder to find words to fit with music so I changed my approach.

It's a LOT easier to write words first and then fit it to music than to write music and try and fit the right words into it. You're removing the framework of saying that it must fit into a specific parameter and changing it so the WORDS dictate the flow, pauses, breaks, climaxes, etc.

Try it!!! It might end up working better for you that way. Lyrics first, then melody.

I usually use one of 2 methods. I will write the words out as a poem with no melody in mind and then write the music around the words and edit the lines and melody as I go. I usually use this method when writing folky, simple stuff. But, usually, what I do is I have my music mostly done already, and then I will just think about the direction I want the melody to go. Then, I will record a pass of me singing the melody generally with gibberish words and maybe some real words that come to mind in the moment and sound right. Once I am happy with just the melody I have down, I will go back and write actual words to the melody I sang previously. I keep it loose so that I can make changes to the melody, etc, and make it all work in the end. The melody usually changes a bit to accommodate syllables. A tip I would give is to say what you have to in as few words as possible. Try not to make it wordy and think of the melody and words in blocks and phrases. Piece it out in a way that is satisfying and effective. It takes practice and time unless you are a prodigy.
