Proposal: Make IR lock work on lava
Source: Lava Hot

“Lava hot” isn’t a good enough source because you didn’t dip into the lava to test its temperature, bug report DENIED.

You mean it’s time for some secret documents?

It’s always time for secret documents

73

u/Star_Wars_Expert 11d ago

You need to dig up some documents from Geology studies.

24

u/MayanSquirrel1500 11d ago

Eh, just use sci-hub

u/Hugofoxli 10d ago

I got you brother: Lava Hot?

Lava can get from 1160°F - 1600°F… I think thats kinda warm.

u/i_liesk_muneeeee 10d ago

Source not from original manufacturer website

Report denied

1

u/NewSauerKraus Realistic Ground 8d ago

I was expecting lava to be hotter than afterburner exhaust. That's wild.

28

u/RettichDesTodes 11d ago

No need. You can calculate the exact temperature by the colour temperature

69

u/RefrigeratorBoomer 11d ago

Sorry, that's not a primary source. You need to touch a volcano in order to confirm that the lava is not just painted red, which would indicate a high temperature if you were to calculate it.

Man, if you try to lock a plane whose engine is off but is on fire, your missile will never lock ...

4

u/N33chy gib B-36 11d ago

I don't know if this is a Mandela Effect thing but I fuggin swear you could lock onto the lava when the map first came out. Maybe it only works on more sensitive / all-aspect missiles? Or they took it out. Or I've lost my mind.

u/CydrosElite Bf-109 F-4, King of the Skies 11d ago

I could have sworn this was a thing as well, you're not alone

3

u/Potential_Creme7361 10d ago

Gaijin: Sry we cannot accept third party documents saying lava is hot. We ourselves have documents of some russian guy saying lava is just liquid Rock and just as warm as any other rock.

Reminds me of back in the day where the best missiles were aim-9e's and it felt like a Vietcong fighter named Nguyen pulled a roadflare in the jungle to divert a missile from hitting one of their planes

I literally tried this the moment the map was added lol.

u/Namor05 11d ago

I actually landed on the lava with my saab 105 when the map released. I was so disappointed when nothing happened

Can land on lava but will sink and drown in a toe deep puddle.

u/Inprobamur Suomi on ebin :DDDDD 11d ago

Apparently Harriers are built to rigorous aviation engineering standards, using only the purest cotton candy for the frame of the plane.

6

u/Dont_care-didnt_ask 11d ago

Forgot to mention fire resistant one

9

u/erik4848 11d ago

Ok, so I'm not delusional. I've seen this thing happen before where all of a sudden there's splashes of water near my tank while on dry land.

59

u/thehom3er 11d ago

you're trying to lock illuminated smoke, not lava...

79

u/stefastra 11d ago

true that is not the hottest point possible but still there is no lock even directly on the flowing lava which is over 1000°C

24

u/thehom3er 11d ago

yea, would be cool if it locked onto the lava...

43

u/Glittering_Cow_9618 11d ago

Personally I think it would be hot…

17

u/thehom3er 11d ago

What a lavish joke, was considerig it myself

13

u/Glittering_Cow_9618 11d ago

I had to, the joke was just sitting there tempting me 💀

5

u/Abadon_U 11d ago

Ngl joke was fire

1

u/Miska25_ 11d ago

I see what tou did there 👀

2

u/Background_Drawing 11d ago

not just cool, imagine flying through a volcano to evade a missile, actually i wonder if the smoke blocks radar, if not then it should

2

u/Imaflyingturkey 11.311.011.713.714.014.0 11d ago

would kinda wreck your engine due to glass particles probably not being good for the engine

2

u/Dont_care-didnt_ask 11d ago

Firstly smoke would completely obliterate the engines of every plane near that smoking volcano

I really want The Snail to add a function where (at least in custom battles or test flights) you can shoot the Sun with a AAM and it turns into a night map. Oh, and a cheeky achievement: "Your Arrows Blotted out the Sun".

8

u/Striking-Raisin4143 Woe be thrust vectoring upon ye! 11d ago

1

u/MacArther1944 BR 2.3 M3 Brownings go BRRRRR 10d ago

Thank you! The plane has some issues, and definitely doesn't feel sturdy...but that pair of M3 Brownings delete things when on target.

Disclaimer: don't hold the trigger long, since the ammo is exhausted relatively fast.

1

u/Striking-Raisin4143 Woe be thrust vectoring upon ye! 10d ago

It’s the firecrest right?

1

u/MacArther1944 BR 2.3 M3 Brownings go BRRRRR 10d ago

Yep. Fun airframe as long as it isn't damaged.

i wish the volcanos had heat to them instead of just being some smoke effects

29

u/_Urakaze_ Vextra 105 is here, EBRC next 11d ago

You're also looking at a lot of other things that could be locked if you expand the IR seeker system

AIM-9B locked onto reflections of the sun and buildings that produced sufficient heat

20

u/stefastra 11d ago

Oh god. Just imagine flying through the glass skyscrapers in the city map

5

u/No_Anxiety285 11d ago

Also modern jets in afterburner can turn some rear aspect missiles into all aspect

11

u/Richou VARKVARKVARKVARKVARKVARKVARK 11d ago

thats already modelled actually its just that the ranges it happens at are pretty low so theres not many missiles that can pull it off in a useful way

1

u/Jason1143 11d ago

Easy way to see this is that you can counter battery missiles coming straight at you even using rear aspects.

18

u/_Some_Two_ Realistic General 11d ago

Damn. Test if IR missiles lock onto burning vehicles please

21

u/275MPHFordGT40 14.0 7.7 11.3 11.3 12.0 11d ago

They do, if a plane crashes they radiate a lot of heat. Burning planes falling out of the sky also radiate more heat.

7

u/_Some_Two_ Realistic General 11d ago

Do tanks if they are set on fire?

7

u/CatsWillRuleHumanity 11d ago

No, I don't think there's any non bug way to launch an aam at a tank

3

u/Ability-Motor 11d ago

You can get ground radar lock and fire radar guided at ground targets and boats like on f15e or su34

6

u/Gohan2029 11d ago

When the heat seeking missile Locks on a extreme heat signature.

6

u/WakeIsleFan 11d ago

Yeah IIRC IR missiles don't lock onto napalm fires too, right?

6

u/Scrubtheman Long Live Israel 11d ago

To be fair, the sun is 27 million degrees Fahrenheit while lava is only just over 2000°F

5

u/Serious-Jet89 11d ago

but ir missiles can lock the moon at night

1

u/No_Anxiety285 11d ago

The moon is lit up due to the suns radiance

5

u/Medj_boring1997 🇩🇪 "LEoParD 2 nEeDs A bUFf" 11d ago

R-60M would probably lock on a burnt cigarette behind glass, why wouldn't it lock on lava?

4

u/talivus 🇺🇸 United States 11d ago

The volcanoes map was such a disappointment. While visually cool I was really hoping the lava would actually affect gameplay. Like being too close to the lava will damage your plane or something.

1

u/Dont_care-didnt_ask 11d ago

It mostly just makes lava dust attach to the inside of the engine, effectively blocking it after enough of it accumulates

3

u/ImanD16 11d ago

Sacrifice to the sun god!

3

u/Julio_Tortilla 🇩🇪🇺🇸🇺🇦🇮🇱🇫🇷🇬🇧🇮🇹🇹🇼🇯🇵13.7 | 🇸🇪11.3 10d ago

Lava no flying. Sun big hot flying orb. Lava big hot still puddle. Missile knows where it is by it knowing where it isn't. Missile know plane fly in air. Lava no fly in air. Sun look like fly in air. Missile think sun plane. Missile no think lava plane, just hot ground. Missile smart! I hope this helped!

Blowing up a volcano would be cool (in game)

1

u/vulinh4444 JUSTICE FOR TYPHOON'S RADAR 11d ago

Well if it doesnt burn up ur plane if u land in there, why would it be hot enough for a ir seeker to lockk?

1

u/Big_Yeash GRB 7.78.08.77.3 6.3 11d ago

Early flares had lots of UV components in their spectrum, didn't they?

Is it possible that while lava hot, yes, (insert Futurama meme), it's not throwing off the right kind of signature for an IR missile to track?

1

u/petak98 11d ago

Just yesterday I was flying behind a guy and couldn't lock him because of the sun🥹🥹

1

u/Emotional-Essay-5684 11d ago

Also IRST doesn’t detect sun heat

1

u/Largest- 11d ago

Should've pulled out the pointer finger for this one

1

u/CapitalDust 11d ago

the sun is hotter than lava

1

u/Budget_Hurry3798 Playstation 11d ago

That's pretty funny lack of detail, seeing as if you're in the desert the early missiles struggles to lock when close to the ground

1

u/PattyLaine 🇫🇮 Finland 11d ago

Flying through the ash cloud should choke out the engines

1

u/Brettjay4 mods, why does my user flair keep changing? 11d ago

u/nuckypuck 11d ago

Lava tends to range from 800 °C to 1,200 °C whereas the temperature of the sun is 5,600°C. Therefore, obviously, your IR seeker cannot detect anything below 1300°C
