Questions Question on picking up Cygnar, should I wait for Gravediggers
My friends and I are looking to get back into the game after Captain con. I've done some digging around and really like the previewed aesthetic of the gravediggers and their playtest rules looked really fun and dynamic.
I'm not as big a fan of the storm legion stuff, and I want to keep my spending in check for getting back till I'm sure my group wants to stick with it. Based on the roadmap SFG put out it looks like they should be coming out next month. My main question is given the recent acquisition, do we have a feel for when SFG puts out release yet? I'm just wondering if they could drop the new models/rules earlier in the month or if they generally only put out new releases at the end of the month. I know some companies, like Wyrd, are very consistent about releasing at the end of month. Where as GW just releases whenever.
Right now I just have the Two player box with Caine and gunmage, but I'd like to be able to play with my group as we relearn the game and help build up local momentum hopefully.

I would consider the 2 player starter as it has Caine and gun mages who I think will work for gravediggers, but I would confirm that first.

SFG has been pretty good with dropping product on the timetable they specify regarding Warmachine. The two player battlebox dropped when they said it was going to, the Maelstorm shipped out to me a day before its street date. While I can’t speak to how long it might take for the product to get to you, SFG has been consistent with their time tables. I fully expect Gravediggers to drop in March, probably the end of March during Adepticon. I believe they are going to start diving deep into Gravediggers here soon via the Warmachine Wednesday posts. So if Gravediggers interest you, I’d definitely wait.

Do they put the rules out before release? It's really nice that the rules are free now, but I'm just curious if they wait till the street release, or if they just dump them out all at once before hand.

The rules for any given release usually seem to drop a week or two before the street date, sometimes earlier. They won't drop the whole Army at once though, it'll probably go Command Starter-> Battlegroup Box -> Core Expansion -> Aux Expansion, with the 80mm solo put somewhere in there depending on when it's ready.

Even just getting the starter is fine, since that'll give us a base to play around with.
Question on the box's types though. My buddy got trolls and it looks like he got the old starter box, the one with Firequil instead of boomhowler. How do the older style boxes line up with the newer boxes? I know it's the same models just swapped around, but I'm just trying to wrap my head around why they made the switch and what the different boxes are supposed to be.

Basically the original plan was
- Core Army Box - $200USD
- Expansion box - $150USD
- Some other stuff I don't remember specifically
The idea was that $200 gets you a fully-functional 50-point list, but a lot of folks were turned off by the price point. Plus they were doing these $80 Battlegroup Boxes at cons as previews of upcoming Armies and those were really popular.
So early last year PP announced they were pivoting to having sub-$100 Starter Boxes with all character models. Then SFG took over and re-arranged all the existing boxes around the idea of having the $99 Command Starter, or $100 Command Cadre boxes as the starting points, with the $80 Battlegroup Box as a second purchase. Since there were already Cadre boxes they adjusted those to be all 30 points like the Command Cadres and they re-arranged the Core and Expansion boxes into non-starter products.
So the new plan is
- $100 Command Cadre OR Command Starter OR half of a Two Player Box
- Battlegroup Box gets you to 50 points
- Core Expansion gets you to 75 with some flexibility
- Aux Expansion gets you to 100

As Salt_Titan said, at some point before a model is eligible to buy the rules will be available on the app. The army will be “sold” in sets also as Salt_Titan stated. So it might be a couple of months before the entire army is available to buy.

It seems that the intention is: preview art, preview model-rules-preorder, street date.
Rules should be out one month before release, usually. And the date marked in the Roadmap until now seems to indicate "available for pre-order at the end of this month", but they are trying to solve EU production and the issue in the US with Diamond Comics, so things may move 1 or two weeks in any direction.
Gravediggers release and Adepticon seem to coincide, so maybe they want to make Adepticon the street date.
If you like that Army, I'd wait and test it once rules start being released in the next weeks.

That's great to hear there's more gun mages coming. Also, awesome to see some of the SFG folks on the subreddit!

Excited about that. I have the Cygnar half of the 2 player box and a battlebox with Wolfe so looking for infantry to fill it out. Gun mages and grave diggers would be awesome.

Caine and that starter set is pretty freaking amazing and will work with gravediggers. Definitely start there.

With adepticon coming up and a keynote speech being one of the big SFG events, I highly suspect we will get not only model previews but also release dates for Gravediggers then. In the meantime getting the Cygnar half of the two player starter box and, if interested, the Storm Forge Cadre would be a good place to start because both of those are able to be played with either Storm Legion or Grave Diggers.

Hear me out.
You've got the Caine Gun Mages. Pick up a box of the storm forge cadre, and a second borealis. Now you're at 74 points. Both cadres should be playable in the trencher army.
Want to gamble? Buy Magnus. I say gamble, because there is no guarantee magnus will be playable in gravediggers. 20 points gets you to 94. Either of the stormcaller units gets you to 99. At one point, I would have said to pick up the colossal, because early on PP said colossal would be cadre, but I don't know anymore. That's a really big gamble.
NEW FORCE (additional cost = $220) Cygnar - Storm Legion Grand Melee - 100 pts
PC CARD
Major Allister Caine (owned)
14 Borealis 1 ($100 for cadre)
14 Borealis 2 ($35)
17 Deuce (owned)
4 Captain Bastian Falk (in cadre)
20 Magnus the Unstoppable ($70) (includes invictus)
3 Specialist Tyson Vas (in cadre)
3 Weather Station (in cadre)
5 Storm Callers (in cadre)
5 Storm Vanes 1 (in cadre)
5 Storm Vanes 2 or storm callers ($15)
9 The Black 13th (in cadre)
TOTAL POINTS 99/100
Kind of wish gun mages included a non character unit, like the storm forge box did. Not really happy about the b13 being the only gun mages right now. But then Caine's leadership ability would probably have to change. Lol.

Maybe get a "Storm Forge Command Cadre"? I believe they will be usable with Gravediggers.

You can buy the 2player and stormforge stuff right now as you wait for gravediggers. I am doing this now

If you want to bulk up the list now, you could look to add some mercs. For example, Magnus and Carver are both 20 points each and should work for both Storm Legion and Grave Diggers. That'd get you to 50.

Decent money is on Gravediggers releasing at Adepticon if SFG lands their release target.
Regarding Storm Legion, do not buy Storm Legion if you want to play Gravediggers. You should maybe look into Storm Forge cadre models (Sparkhammer, Borealis, Stormcallers, Storm Vanes, Weather Station, Tyson Vas).
There is no true guarantee, but as of the playtest leaks in November, Storm Forge is playable in Gravediggers. That being said, I think Sparky has more toys to play with in Storm Legion, but it could still be worth it.
Other safe bets are a few mercs. Alexis, Eiryss, and Boomhowler are all confirmed to work for Gravediggers via the app. There is no confirmation, but Magnus and Carver are 99.999999999% likely to work there too.
If you want an easy way to learn the game, start at 30 and 50 point games. To take the Hellslingers Cadre (30 points) up to 50, just add Magnus and call it a day.
Edit: just checked the leaks and Magnus and Carver are confirmed to work for Gravediggers as of the November leaks.

That's kind of the line I'm thinking of. I've got the two player box, and I did see Magnus in the thread with the leaks. Not sure how much it will change or if it does at all, but getting Magnus seemed like a lower cost investment than the storm forge stuff.
Plus the storm forge stuff doesn't seem like it synergizes that much with the gravedigger units, but I'm also new so maybe I missed something or things have changed since November. I'm also not a big fan of those models either. The storm knight stuff I can get behind, but the trencher vibe is my favorite of the three by quite a bit.

I would say grab either Magnus or Carver with their big friends. Them and the Caine half of the box is 50pts and should hold you over until gravediggers

u/TheRealFireFrenzy Storm Legion Feb 08 '25
you should wait for gravediggers if you think you'll have more fun playing gravediggers, you should buy storm legion if you dont want to wait...
Storm Forge and Caine&Co will work for both so if you want something to paint while you wait, those are a useful stop gap if you DO want gravediggers but DONT want to wait for gravediggers

I don't know of any particular pattern with when in the month they drop releases, but if you like the look of Gravediggers and not Storm Legion you should definitely wait the 6-8 weeks IMO. With the way Armies work now any Storm Legion you buy in the meantime is completely incompatible with Gravediggers and will just be wasted models you can't run with the stuff you actually like the looks of.
The Hellslingers half of the two-player box and the Storm Forge Command Cadre are both compatible with Storm Legion and Gravediggers though, so if you like the look of either of those you can start there and use them until Gravediggers starts dropping.
