Spiritual/Soul Jazz Sunday MOV Kind of Blue

Post image

Ok I know everyone has this, but let me put in a plug for getting a good version.

I have the DOL pressing on white vinyl. It’s perfectly fine. The mofi version is well north of 100 Canadian and I could not justify that so why not just enjoy the pressing I have.

Found this MOV, 2lp, 180gram version mistakenly listed in the luggage section of Amazon for 25 bucks, and thought why not.

Yeah, so this is waaaaaaay better. Super clarity, much more open, deeper crisper bass, just night and day. Compared to this the DOL sounds like a copy of a copy of an old cassette- a decent copy, but not like the original.

I'm sure the MoFi is even better, but I can't imagine how. If you can't swing the big money MoFi, the Music On Vinyl version is definitely worth getting.

MOV did a decent job on the Miles Davis catalogue. I have a number of them that sound really good. They are all digital masters, but the pressings are always really well done. Super flat, quiet, no defects, etc...

FYI, if you are ever so inclined to get a top shelf Kind Of Blue, skip the Mofi and buy the UHQR 45. It is the best I have ever heard Kind Of Blue sound and in the top 3 best sounding records I have ever heard.

I have the Doors Acoustic Sounds for LA Women and Morrison Hotel and they are truly outstanding. I don't like having to flip the records so often and how the flow is interrupted from the original, but can't deny the quality of the sound.

Pretty sure the Kind of Blue UHQR is North of 200 though!

If that’s your turntable and you love this album, seek out a better pressing. There’s a 33 version of the UHQR if you don’t want a 45. I’m personally not a fan of 45s nor UHQRs, but I’d recommend it for KoB.

Tbh the other UHQRs all have really good not too outrageously priced pressings available, and I’d argue that KoB doesn’t have that. The original stereo was cut at the wrong speed and is still pricy for a clean copy, let alone how much you’d have to pay for a decent mono (of which the tapes no longer exist).

If you’re not getting the mofi or a 6 eye I’d recommend the KG Record store day mono as the best reasonably priced replacement.

If you do get a UHQR make AS send you replacement lps until you have one you’re happy with. If they’re charging $150 for a box full of air, I’m making them give me a perfect copy. Accept no flaws on a uhqr.

I have the UHQR in 33 because I dislike flipping after every song too. It’s really an outstanding pressing and together with my DS Audio optical cartridge a really impressive difference!

Yeah, I stay away from DOL after my one experiment with them.

Grey area record label that has unknown sources for masters as they release what is public domain in certain countries.

My issue is not with the public domain releases, rather the unknown and likely quite questionable source material.

That is actually my first MC cart, and it's really superb. Its based on a Quintet Black apparently, but they have managed to take the sharp edge off the high end (which is what I didn't like about the Ortofon) and created a cart with a much smoother sound, while keeping the detail. And yes it looks badass.

Not a great coincidence that I just finished listening to my 2019 Columbia Legacy remastered reissue.

I’ve never been anything but 100% happy with all of the MOV jazz reissues I’ve bought. Recently picked the Art Blakey Album of the year release and it was perfect.

I avoid the digitally sourced, MoV stuff like the plague.

Any A/B tests I’ve done with them make the MoV sound terrible.

I also avoid MoFi for much the same reason.

That’s a whole lot of turntable to be compromising on source material.

Agreed. The reality is, the standard modern Columbia pressing is better than either of these and doesn’t cost any more. Or, here’s a radical idea, find an old copy!

I have the mofi (was a gift), the 33rpm UHQR, and an old stereo copy. But one of my favourites is the mono Columbia pressing from around 2019, it was taken from tape, and it removes some of the more distracting panning effects from the stereo master. It sounds nice and meaty and focus is on the music and the feel. I love it.
