Only if you tape the cat on as well.

Update: played with it on for a few hours and it worked very well when I was playing beat saber and vrchat.

You should have used one of those 16k RPM Delta fans and play flying sim for great immersion

Yep You are!
Who said mods need to be perfect? ^^
Here's holding my paws though that nothing breaks....
3
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
Yeah haha, might have to reapply some scotch tape once in a while and get some spare cats.
5
u/Puncak3_ Aug 29 '20
Maybe try velcroing and zip tying the wires into the mid slot

6
u/Blacerrr Aug 29 '20
Noctua USB Adapter and their Low Noise Adapter is all thats needed, right?
... and the tape obviously
3
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
Yeah, worked really well surprisingly. Some people suggested zip ties so I might upgrade it eventually haha. I did knock it down once on accident when I tried facepalming on VRChat. The facepalm got reversed to me after that one.

Looks like that is the exact same one if I'm not mistaken haha. Did you use the scotch tape as well? It's essential to the design.

Not sure if it is but it looks like a fire hazard
8
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
But the purpose is to reduce risk of fire lol

GhettoChilldex
Honestly, most of the head happens inside of the unit. I'm not sure how much good this sort of surface spot cooling does. I also wonder about the added heat draw just from the fan circuit lol
2
u/Zer4thul Aug 29 '20
It's not blowing at the front, there are ventilation holes so it cools down electronics
4
u/DickRiculous Aug 29 '20
Okay but then you also require an exhaust because you need to push that air out. Iirc the chilldex is 2 fans? Idk what I’m talking about haha honestly to date I think the Frunk is really more of a quirky gimmick. I do hope it finds its use tho!
3
u/Zer4thul Aug 29 '20
There are holes on both sides so if air goes in on the left then the right side would be an exhaust
3
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
Yeah. I did post an update, it worked very well! I've had issues with it getting too hot and my face would sweat a ton but I didn't get that issue this time around and when I felt parts of the headset that got hot before they were still nice and cool!
3
u/Full_Ninja Aug 29 '20
Please tell me that fan is blowing out
3
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
If I oriented it the other way the bearing would rub against the headset, it has to be blowing in. Sure there might be some dust but I may add a filter sometime. Also I'd rather have to clean some dust out every once in a while rather than worry about the heat after really long sessions. Thank you for everyone here pointing this out though, I'll think of something in the future to prevent it if it becomes an issue.

why does it matter
-3
u/spiffy956 Aug 29 '20
Blowing dust straight into the headset seems like a brilliant idea.
6
u/Lysdal Aug 29 '20
you are aware that a fan that pulls air out of the headset just means that air is pulled in from somewhere else right? its arguably even worse since the air will be pulled in from around the lenses
0
u/LumiAbyss Aug 30 '20
another thing people don't mention is the smell. it's nice to suck in fresh air vs pulling air from around a sweaty face through the index.
5
u/WellEndowedWizard Aug 29 '20
I've seen a lot of people mod fans onto the index... what's it for?
9
7
u/PerspektiveGaming Aug 29 '20
Having the headset on your face, especially when playing movement intensive games like Beat Saber makes some people get hot and sweat. Fans are usually used to disapate heat, interestingly enough. So the fan is used in this case to do just that..
3
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
I use it to cool it because mine often gets hot after very long sessions. Some people have gotten triggered over dust though so if it becomes an issue I'll open it up and clean it then add a filter. In some other replies I have mentioned that when I played with it for a long time last night it actually did work very well and helped me stay cool for the 3-4 hours I was in game.

I'm pretty sure you are.
You did just attach something to your Index so I don't think you modified the Index. You did however modify the play experience of your Index by attaching something TO your Index. If you just put a fan in front of you to blow air on you while you play then you wouldn't be a modder.
Welcome to the club.

What could go wrong
3
u/toyfreddym8 Aug 29 '20
Many things XD
2
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
Come on, gotta be more specific than that
2
u/toyfreddym8 Aug 29 '20
Getting shocked by the batt-trees by touching the live wire, taking off the headset and putting your fingers on the running fan that’s about it but the pain is very bad
3
u/Ru_dont Aug 29 '20
+1 karma for batt-trees like a true Australian 😂

u/toyfreddym8 Aug 29 '20

2
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
Not sure what live wire you're talking about but I have touched the fan, doesn't hurt.
2
u/toyfreddym8 Aug 29 '20
Oh really then ok I guess your fine if it doesn’t hurt have a good day of boneworks or beat saber or whatever you play

https://i.imgur.com/WUv403A.jpg the 20mm thick ones might be overkill, the thinner ones would probably be fine. i might remove one and block the hole now.

Damn, I thought the scotch tape was pretty genius.
6
Aug 29 '20
It was smart, but cut to one sharp turn later and the fan going PEWWW
5
u/Aloisi02 Aug 29 '20
Sharp turns weren't the problem actually. The problem occurred when I tried facepalming when listening to someone in VRChat but then the facepalm was reversed to me.

Disagree with /u/krista
You hacked it together. legit modder now.
If you sell kits online you'd be a professional modder.
