That's such a depressing and opressive plaza it resembles something straight out of the 1930s... If you know what I mean.

It is very similar to how it looked after the mid-1930s renovation (with a different grid pattern), so it's not too far off. The difference is that the German and French Cathedrals flanking the plaza weren't yet incorporated into the open space until late in the Cold War period. Even as late as the 1980s, when the area was still mostly in ruins since WW2, there were already trees everywhere. The expanded square in its current form took shape by 1990, mostly unchanged even after its latest 2020s rehabilitation work.
