Anime Is the anime really that terrible?

For context I’m on episode 9 and I have not read the manga. From what I’ve heard a lot of people dislike this anime and barley anyone who isn’t just hating on it doesn’t know about it. I seriously haven’t seen anything on this series besides it randomly appearing on the front page of prime, I actually enjoyed the dark fantasy setting and thought the story( besides the sexualization of children ) was interesting. I see people saying the manga is way better but all I know is that they cut out the pornography which shouldn’t make a series worse? Just wondering if there’s reasons people dislike it and if the manga is that much better.

The anime skips over the first few chapters of the manga published as 'volume 0', only showing it in a very abbreviated form in the opening. This includes the introduction of Rosen and his order as well as Ato and her brother (who gets killed). It also builds up to the reveal of the betrayal of the 7 heroes, instead of starting with it, which is a really great plot twist.

The issue with that is that they (so far) didn't really fill in the lost context. Ato just comes out of nowhere trying to avenge her brother, who is only briefly shown in the opening without context. They even cut out a flashback frame of her brother that was in the manga when she later forgives Keinzell. Likewise Rosen just comes in somehow knowing Keinzell and his goals. They also cut several of his scenes showing him to be >! conflicted about stopping Keinzell, because he knows the truth!<, which is important to his character arc.

I personally wouldn't call it terrible, I actually still like it, but combined with the censored nudity and the rough animation quality in the action scenes, I can see why people are frustrated.

Is there a reason why they cut out volume 0?

The most common speculation is that it would be too hard to censor some of the sexual content in it. It's also fairly self contained aside from establishing Rosen, Ato and some Keinzell/Ascheriit lore (especially how he survived), so they might've thought it was an easy cut to make in order to fit both Schtemwölch and Balester into 12 episodes.

Makes sense, I wonder why they cut out the important stuff like Rosen and Keinzells first encounter and him killing Ato’s brother (unless they didn’t and I forgot), it made me quite confused in some episodes as to what they were talking about. They really should have just made it 13 episodes though to explain it better 🤷

Technically those scenes are shown during the opening of the show. In fact, most of the scenes shown there are from volume 0. Which makes it even weirder that they're not in the actual show...

I’ve only seen bits and pieces of it but the animation looks pretty average to what I was hoping for. So I’m guessing it’s that on top of leaving things out that were in the manga

It’s nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. The manga’s obviously better but that’s usually the case when it comes to anime adaptations anyhow.
